This was a sweet and emotional YA manga with sci-fi/time travel elements. Nacho receives a letter from her future self, warning her to change a series of events that leads to the loss of a dear friend. The friendships and budding relationships are adorable. Definitely written for a YA reader, there are dark topics here to be wary of - see CW in comments. 4⭐️

3 ⭐ A group of Friends write letters to their past selves saying to help a friend. Keep him alive. This graphic novel has a well written story and great illustrations. Sometimes it was a bit hard to tell which time panels were in, but overall very well done. Saying that, this story was not for me. I do not like sad books. The reader knows pretty early on that Kekeru‘s mother commits suicide and that something happens to Kekeru.

Manga is big in Japan! This is the first one I read and it‘s super sweet. (Excuse the picture scooped from google - I‘m low on time as I‘m holidaying) Any reccs for more manga? - I definitely like the slice of life variety best.

xicanti YOTSUBA&! is great slice of life manga featuring an adventurous five-year-old and the adults who help her explore the world. It‘s got quite a different vibe than ORANGE, though. I always grin my way through each volume. 5y
Centique @xicanti excellent! Thanks for the tip. It sounds perfect. I will search it out. 5y
batsy I really enjoyed Emma, set in Victorian England. So absorbing and I took great pleasure in the detailed art. 5y

BarbaraBB I‘ve never read one. Are they graphic novels? 5y
Lindy Slice of life are my favourite kind of manga. The series that I‘m caught up in at the moment also has elements of science fiction in modern Tokyo: 5y
Lindy Orange has been on my TBR for a while; I‘m moving it up in priority now. Another great slice of life manga: 5y
Lindy I also love this standalone: 5y

Centique @Lindy thank you SO MUCH. These look great! Stacking all of them 😍 5y
Lindy @Centique You‘re welcome 😇 5y
Centique @BarbaraBB sorry I seemed to have missed your question there Barbara! I think they can be anything from comics to larger graphic novels - but they are translated from Japanese and have a particular art style. They also read right to left so it takes a little to get into that reading pattern. 5y

Good news, friends! I was able to return the dodgy almost-healthy ice cream! I invested the refund money in a Reese‘s bar and a Cadbury Creme Egg, neither of which is remotely almost-healthy.

The Creme Egg in particular reminded me why Creme Eggs aren‘t as wonderful in practice as in theory. Ulp.

At least the book‘s still wonderful. And the social was fun, even though I was obliged to leave early because my DD wanted to go. #readathon

Rachel.Rencher Healthy icecream shouldn't be a thing. 😂 I'm not ashamed to devour a Ben & Jerry's from time to time. 5y
xicanti @Rachel.Rencher it tasted like cold, vaguely chocolatey cardboard, and I‘m honestly not sure if that‘s because it was off or because the company designed it that way. 5y
Rachel.Rencher @xicanti sounds like a pint of Halo Top that I tried once 🙊 never again 5y
xicanti @Rachel.Rencher I actually had a really good experience with Halo Top‘s Chocolate Bar flavour a few months back. This stuff, by Good North, was nothing like that. I‘m glad the store took it back. 5y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I usually eat one Cadbury Creme Egg a year because it takes me that long to forget. 5y

I read some more ORANGE while I ate my doctored leftovers. (I crumbled up yesterday‘s tofu chunks, then fried the whole thing up in a bit of bacon grease, more chilli paste, and hoisin. YUM.) This reread‘s doing it for me in a big way. What a great series.

Now I‘ve gotta take a break and go back to Superstore because my almost-healthy ice cream‘s freezer burned and tastes dodgy. I hope they‘ll let me return it. #readathon

I have to read a manga book for one of the challenges in which I‘m participating. So I chose Volume 1 of several issues of Orange. I‘ve never read manga before, so I was completely surprised that I enjoyed it so much. It has a time travel element involving high schoolers that are trying to save their friend by changing the future. I‘ll definitely read Volume 2, and if you have any recommendations of other Manga titles, I‘d love to hear!

Cute story, but I just don't enjoy manga. The art, the "reverse" reading, it just doesn't do it for me. I read spoilers online, though. Clever plot.

P.s. I mean, the text is read left to right, but the bubbles and panels are read right to left? It's too much work. Can't they just print the art mirrored to the original?

June stats!

I'm thrilled I read so much 5-star stuff last month. ORANGE, Ichigo Takano's 5-volume manga series about a group of teenagers who team up with their 26-year-old selves to save their newest friend's life, hit me so hard I had to buy the second half rather than wait for my library to get it. THE LODESTAR OF YS, a gay fantasy romance by Amy Rae Durreson, left me kicking myself for how long it took me to pull it off La TBR.

So I had a BLT on naan for breakfast, with cheese and mayo. It was delicious.

I had expected to be able to get through this manga in a couple sittings because I can usually get through comics and manga pretty fast. That didn't happen in this case, not because I thought Orange was bad, but because I was reading it right before bed when I was really tired and couldn't focus for very long. And I discovered that this sort of thing works very well for me in that sort of situation.

Looking forward to the second volume.
