That feeling when the book you're reading references the next in your stack ...

I don't remember hearing that d'Alembert's birth mother was Mme de Tencin, but if I did it didn't stick with me because who the heck is Claudette de Tencin? I only encountered her earlier this year through her proto-gothic Memoirs of the Count of Comminges -- and my next read, her historical novel “The Siege of Calais.“

In Aczel's story she does not seem pleasant

swynn I should add: Tencin's “seeming unpleasant“ is not about her giving up for adoption an out-of-wedlock child. The unpleasantness comes a few paragraphs down (and not pictured), where Mme. de Tencin wants no contact with the child until she learns that he has become a famous mathematician -- at which point she tries to bring her “son“ into her social orbit. In Aczel's account, d'Alembert himself resented her self-serving interest. With justice say I (edited) 1w

(2011) It's a popular history of Western mathematics light on mathematical detail and heavy on biographical anecdotes. Some favorite stories are included: the Cardano-Tartaglia and Newton-Leibniz feuds, Galois's stupid and romantic death at 20, the Bourbaki pranksters and Grothendieck's reclusiveness. But for me the stories were familiar and Aczel's retelling didn't add much. I'd have liked more math, but that's not the kind of book this is.

#wdncw #realhistory I don‘t know who needs to hear this or be reminded but slavery was bad. There should be no debating about this. Talking about it is not “woke.” It was a pure evil system. If you‘re on the side of saying it wasn‘t that bad you‘re either a N—i or White Suprem@cist. You clearly need to re-evaluate your understanding of history. Denying the telling of people‘s history/experiences doesn‘t mean it didn‘t happen.

ncsufoxes You can‘t ignore what makes you feel uncomfortable. It still happened. 1w

dabbe Our nation never fully dealt with this since the writing of our declaration. Until we do, we will always be a nation divided. And, as Lincoln eloquently and accurately once said, “A nation divided against itself cannot stand.“ And to what everyone wrote above, 💙✊🏻💙. 1w

Recommended reading this Memorial Day.

Susanita My office did an event about LGBT rights in the military, back when it was still okay to talk of such things. She was the main speaker and gave an interesting presentation. 3mo

Each chapter in this impressive, informative read follows a female scientist influenced by Marie Curie while also sharing her astounding story. Marie's love of science still influences young scientists today, and her dedication to learning is infectious.

This book is well written and the perfect mix of science and personal reflections.

Music to soothe the soul. Song is more incorruptible than love. Songs endure & pass through generations while love can be transient.
