The Misunderstood Jew | Amy-Jill Levine
post image
Pickpick

This was my first intro to Amy-Jill Levine, and I‘m definitely planning to read more from her. How can you not read on when the intro begins with the sentence: “When I was a child, my ambition was to be pope.” 😂 This, from a Jewish New Testament scholar.

Levine offers a fresh, much-needed perspective on Jesus and his New Testament context. She emphasizes that Christians tend to interpret the New Testament solely through the context of the ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) Old Testament, which results in an inaccurate & mistaken picture of what first-century Judaism actually looked like—and often leads to projecting anti-Semitic views onto the text & out into the world. Her writing is accessible & approachable, and although I found her characterization of the Apostle Paul a little harsh, she makes a powerful case for careful study of the historical context as well as for a more robust interfaith dialogue. 1w
TheBookHippie I wanted to be a nun 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 1w
BarbaraJean @TheBookHippie 😂😂 Reminds me of Anastasia Krupnik and her desire to be a Catholic because of the fancy white confirmation dress 😆 Levine said some of her attraction to the position was that she really liked the pope‘s hat 🤣 1w

Graywacke Sounds fantastic. And @TheBookHippie - that‘s hysterical. 1w
TheBookHippie @Graywacke I blame Audrey Hepburn and the nuns I saw in the city looking so chic in my 8 year old brain 🤣 1w
BarbaraJean @TheBookHippie Who knew that Catholic fashion would be so enticing?! 😂 1w
TheBookHippie @BarbaraJean 😂😵‍💫😂😅🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
marleed I really wanted to be the flying nun specifically Sally Field as the Flying Nun. Imagine my disappointment when I learned as an adult that Sally hated that role 🤣🤣🤣 7d
BarbaraJean @marleed 😂😂 Adulthood brings so many disappointments!! 7d

The Problem of Pain | C. S. Lewis

I've been working my way through this. Besides the "Narnia" series, it's the first C.S. Lewis book I've read.

This was an interesting, enjoyable, quick read. There were a handful of debunked claims asserted about both the Bible and Pagan holidays. Townsend also limited his Pagan contributors and interviewees to those who are Wicca- and/or Druidry-aligned. I would have liked to hear from the voices of many other Paganisms.

Narnia for adults, in a way. I love Lewis‘ ability to articulate difficult mysteries in an understandable way yet without robbing them of their ineffable-ness.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I feel like every review of Lewis nonfiction for me could be the same: it takes some work, but it's worth it.
You can trust Lewis to build (and build and build) an argument in a way that is logical, philosophical, and tongue-in-cheek and then bring you to a conclusion that has you more sure than ever of Christ and God's goodness.
This book was written 84 years ago, but its message is timeless.

“Not many years ago when I was an atheist, if anyone had asked me, ‘Why do you not believe in God?‘ my reply would have run something like this: ‘Look at the universe we live in.‘”

This was a fun quiz! I scored 91/100. I‘m a pretty big music fan and enjoy a lot of different genres. Here‘s the link if you want to take the survey https://bit.ly/46wY0GA
So hard to choose but right now my faves would have to be:
1. With or Without You
2. The Edge of Seventeen
3. There is a Light That Never Goes Out
