Jesus Feminist
Jesus Feminist: An Invitation to Revisit the Bibles View of Women | Sarah Bessey
Gender roles have been debated for centuries, and now Sarah Bessey offers a clarion freedom call for all who want to realize their giftedness and potential in the kingdom of God. Through a thoughtful review of biblical teaching and church practices, Bessey shares how following Jesus made a feminist out of her.

Sarah's writing style is so beautiful and inviting. The pictures she paints with her words completely captured my heart right from the introduction, and so much of what she shared resonated with me. There is a sweetness to this book that is evident as she shares her story and the heart of Jesus for the church. Highly recommend. It‘s a soul-refreshing read.

Even Paul‘s Recommendation that women should ask their husbands if they had questions was revolutionary for that time period. He was encouraging women to learn! to ask questions, to seek out answers, to fully participate in the community.

I expected something more substantial. This was very "feminism light" and cishet/gender binary focused. There were MANY places where she made great points that could embrace LGBTQ folks, but every*single*time she neglected to extend her language to cover the community. It ended up feeling exclusive. I also didn't click with the evangelical tone and toward the end, overly emotive Christianese. By the last 2 chapters, I couldn't wait for it to end.

While I agree wholeheartedly with Bessey's thoughts - that the labels "Christian" and "feminist" are not mutually exclusive - this book fell a bit short for me. I think I was expecting a bit more Biblical analysis and study rather than memoir.

I would recommend it as an introduction to Christian feminism rather than an in depth study. She cites some interesting sources that I would like to check out.

Daisey I agree; there were some good points but I kept wanting more. 7y
underthebelljar @Daisey It wasn't bad and I enjoyed it but there wasn't really anything that I hadn't already read before. Thinking I might check out this book she quoted quite a bit 7y

This is an affirming, fluffy, uplifting celebration of women in the church that would be a lovely starting place for Christian women seeking feminism in the church. It's a theological memoir, with Bessey sharing from her own life while referencing theologians and the Bible. It is not academic, but listening to it was like sinking into a warm bubble bath. 3.5/5. Just finished this one on my lunch break. Many of you have asked what I think, and for right now I've gotta say...I need to take time to talk to Jesus and reflect on what I have learned. There may be a post in the near future, maybe not. But I can say this: God has called us...all of us, not just women...to so much more. I am praying for the Holy Spirit to move and for me to faithfully follow. I wanna be a part of this Plan!

Preach!!!!!

Notafraidofwords How intersectional is this book? 8y
emilymorgan @Notafraidofwords I haven't finished this book so I can't speak for it as a whole yet. It's revisiting the Bible's view of women. So it uses a lot of scripture to talk mostly about the debate of women in the church and women in "biblical marriage." There hasn't been anything so far about race or sexual orientation (not to say there won't be in pages I haven't read yet!). I've enjoyed it as an explanation of the context of controversial verses. 8y
HeatherBookNerd Great book! 8y
See All 9 Comments
emilymorgan @HeatherBookNerd it is wonderful so far! I can't stop taking notes! 8y
Daisydo Wow! What a statement. 8y
emilymorgan @Daisydo there is much more where that came from! 8y
MariettaSG The first sentence and the start of the second sentence sounds interesting but then the implication that strength is only of value as a partner or helper of men is troublesome as it implies that a woman's value is only in relationship to men. I think Jesus challenges the woman at the well not to define herself only as meaningful when in relationship with men. Men's lives only changing for the better when a woman is (insert definition of choice) 8y
MariettaSG negates men's responsibility for their own lives and has contributed to the problem of women being considered as responsible for all manner of ills, in fact for pretty much everything, positive or negative. It also reduces men to helpless beings who "need" women and without whom they cannot simply be. In fact the verse about no marriage in heaven to me implies that Jesus sees people irrespective of their earthly relationships or gender. (edited) 8y
emilymorgan @MariettaSG I 100% agree with you. The first sentence is what I was focusing on in this post! This chapter is specifically about marriage and the rest of the chapter goes into some of the points you made. Just remember this is just one sentence within an entire chapter of context :) Based on your comments, i think you would enjoy this book. 8y

There was a lot of good here, but there was little that was new to me. I wanted more depth, and more of the "invitation to revisit the Bible's view of women." There were some moving personal stories, a great call for women to live out their callings without culturally-imposed restrictions, and I loved the connections Bessey makes between justice, feminism, and faith. But the writing just wasn't my style... it felt way too flowery & overdone.

BarbaraJean Also... I wonder if I would have liked it better with a different narrator, or in print. The over-the-top floweriness might have come across differently in print, and I for sure wouldn't have gotten annoyed with the way the narrator pronounced "Aslan" (Ass-Lawn?!?) and "Abba" (couldn't help but get "Dancing Queen" in my head). It's also a bit awkward to listen to someone not the author narrating nonfiction that's largely first-person. 8y
Libby1 Ass-lawn?!? 🤣 That is very funny. 8y
Daisey I very much agree with your thoughts on this book! Although, I don't think reading it in print would have made it any better for me. 8y

I appreciated this book, but I kept wanting more. It was warm, uplifting, and affirming, but I couldn't help wanting a little more depth or even some grit. I would have liked references to more Biblical examples and more depth in those mentioned for readers who are not already familiar with the stories. I also would have appreciated more real world stories of women making a mark on the world today through their ministry.

Can I just tell you guys how much I love Hoopla? A really really lot. I've been sick this past week, and I spent most of the weekend on the couch blowing my nose and reading through the rest of my month's Hoopla checkouts in comics. In between the comics and the congestion, I also discovered a TON of books on Hoopla that are on the "don't own yet" section of my #TBR. Including this audiobook, which I started on my way to work this morning. ??

Daisey I agree completely about Hoopla, and I did not realize this was available there. Thanks so much for sharing! (edited) 8y
