Another intriguing and confusing addition to the series. Confusing, in a good way, as you're never sure what will happen next. Lots of character development for Lynly and Havers as well.

My #bookhaul from the library today.
Do I have 4 books I'm in the middle of? Yes.
Do I have 2 successive books to read afterwards? Also, yes.
Do I regret bringing home another stack? Absolutely not. 😂

This is becoming a favourite series, and in book 4, poe is dragged from the court case about his house to assist Mi5 in an investigation set around a world leader summit in Cumbria. As poe and Tilly Bradshaw are drawn into a Web of intrigue, the mystery goes into events in Iraq 20 years earlier. This was my weekend reading and a definite page turner.

DS Washington Poe returns in the fourth book of the series. The case of a man found beaten to death in a backstreet brothel in Carlisle pulls Poe & Tilly away from almost certain victory in Poe's court case fight to keep his home. It seems that they have been specifically requested by higher powers (MI5) to investigate the case, but as they are drawn deeper into the investigation, it becomes clear that someone is putting roadblocks in their way.

OutsmartYourShelf Most of the gang is still around: Tilly of course, FBI Agent Melody Lee returns in a greater capacity in this book, whilst characters such as DCI Nightingale have walk-on parts this book. Unfortunately there's no DI Flynn who is still recovering from the events of the previous book & very little Edgar (Poe's dog) either. Again the plot is rather complex & as events unfold, things don't go the way you expect. 7mo
OutsmartYourShelf Although it was good & the friendship between Poe & Tilly is as funny as ever, it didn't quite live up to the first three books in my view. I was actually able to work most of it out for a change. 4.5🌟

Beautifully written, atmospheric read that paints a vivid picture of a small village and what happens when modernity and progress come calling. It‘s a story about passion, forbidden love, family, and consequences. The pace is slow, the writing occasionally dense but I found myself drawn into the character‘s lives and the anxiety of knowing that everything is about to change and none of it is in your control. A wonderful book.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

P4: The last 40 years on the land were revolutionary and disrupted all that had gone before for thousands of years—a radical and ill-thought-through experiment that was conducted on our fields.

Oddly named detective, Washington Poe, & the National Crime Agency (NCA) have mutually turned their backs on each other following an incident on Poe's last case. He is reluctantly brought back into the fold when the third victim of a serial killer is found with Poe's name carved into his chest. The victims are being burned alive in old stone circles in Cumbria & as yet, the police are nowhere near catching the killer. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Poe is teamed up with his old sergeant, Flynn (who has been temporarily promoted to Poe's old rank) & a brilliant but socially awkward civilian analyst, called Tilly Bradshaw. Working together, sometimes against the wishes of those in charge, this small team races to find the killer before they strike again.

OutsmartYourShelf There's no shortage of crime series with maverick police detectives who buck the system, but I quite liked Washington Poe. The best character though is Tilly, some of her 'without filter' comments at the meeting with the Bishop had me laughing out loud & her friendship with Poe looks like it may make the series rather enjoyable. Their humorous moments help balance out the fact that the case itself was very dark & generally unpleasant. 12mo
OutsmartYourShelf Overall it kept my attention well (although I guessed the identity of the killer) & it was intriguing enough for me to buy the next one in the series. 4.5 🌟

TWs: violent death, paedophilia, sexual assault.

For fans of MW Craven😱… I don‘t know how I feel about this because he has quickly become a top 5 favorite author of mine and we know how Hollywood can mess up a good book. 😂
