Poems of the Sea | J. D. McClatchy
post image

Perhaps Dr. Mike will prefer these poems. #AboutTheOcean This had to happen next. @TheBookHippie I‘m probably going to be smirking and laughing through this whole book, looking for the tiniest shred of (even imaginary) double entendre. Please let there be some Whitman in here!!! 💚💚💚

Okay, Litens, I need your help. I got Dr. Quinn on DVD and I‘m watching the library episode. I‘m trying to make a list for a friend and I of all the books mentioned in this episode, and we‘re not sure what to make of the above reference. We think it could be Jane Austen‘s Sense and Sensibility, but we‘re not sure. Can anyone think of anything it could be? #DrQuinnReadingList #BlameDrMike #DrQuinn #namethatbook

Butterfinger Wish I could help. 5y
Ericalambbrown My first thought is Elizabeth Gaskell. She was a friend of Dickens and they shared a desire to write with a social conscience. I can think of a couple of her characters that were prostitutes and other sorts of “fallen” women. (edited) 5y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown ooooh... she could be the one. The time frame is perfect and she seems famous enough to have made it to Boston in time to be included in the library in question. I‘m thinking you‘ve got it. I knew I could count on you guys!!! 5y

Ericalambbrown Well, this has got me thinking. . . Mary Wollstonecraft wrote about prostitution outright in a nonfiction sense. If the character was at all progressive, he could have meant her. Also George Eliot. She had a little bit to say in both Middlemarch and Mill on the Floss about women having no options other than prostitution. This got me thinking! Thank you! 😊 5y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown he could have been. She talks about him being open minded and all that. Is it‘s from the mid-19th century or sooner it could all apply. 5y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown I think, in a way, we‘re trying to “reconstruct” and read his library from what is mentioned or read in the show. Conceivably, all three could be in there. I‘m going to put down all three and see what she thinks. I‘m voting all three are in there. lol 5y
Ericalambbrown @GingerAntics That‘s awesome! What a fun thing to do 5y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown we‘re both readers (she‘s the fancy one with a MA in Lit) and we both love Dr. Quinn. Once we discovered this episode, we started compiling a list. Other books are mentioned in other episodes. We‘ve got 12 books, a book topic we‘re still deciphering, the genre of “poetry,” and 4 authors so far. It‘s not the Gilmore Girls list or anything, but it‘s fun... and still growing. (edited) 5y

I need some more diversity in my reading, so I‘m taking in a little bit of poetry (I‘ve always felt awkward reading it for some reason - accept Shakespeare‘s sonnets 🤷🏼‍♀️), so my current plan is to just stop in with this book once a day and read a poem. It could take me all year to read it, but so be it. #BlameDrMike

That time Sully read dirty poetry *not* about the ocean to Dr. Mike and a whole new generation decided it was time to check out Walt Whitman.

I was looking for nonfiction at the library today and couldn't resist! Any other Dr. Quinn fans out there? The range is way broader than that, but that was the draw for me. 😊

TheBookDream That was a favorite show of my dad's when I was growing up. I later found out it was because he's a HUGE fan of Jane Seymour in the movie Somewhere in Time. There's another good book based film. 8y
