Another fun installment of the series. I like how mismatched Wendell and Emily are because it's always entertaining. Emily is her scholarly self and can't help but research her way into more trouble.

I'm actually having a really hard time getting back into this book because my brain isn't done obsessing over my last book.
I started reading this book almost a year ago but never got past halfway. I'm starting from the beginning again so I can finish it before seeing the friend who gave it to me. We meet up annually to talk about books, so I wanna have this one fresh in my mind when I see them again.
Everything that was interesting and charming about the previous book (folklore and fey study) is severely lacking in this installment. Emily is somehow even more unlikable, bratty, and entitled.
I found her treatment of her niece particularly unpleasant to read, as the niece did absolutely nothing wrong, but was viewed as a nuisance regardless.
How cute is this book return at my library?
I was having trouble engaging with the story to start. Then I realized the fairies weren‘t all going to be sweet and sassy Tinkerbells. Too dark for me. 🤷🏼♀️
There, all finished! There are aspects of it that feel like they could be streamlined (a particular mystery feels like it takes forever to solve given it's only a stepping stone on the way, and I'd solved it before the narrative condescended to get there), but I found myself sad when it was over. I'm glad I have a copy of Confounding Oaths (a loose sequel) out of the library ready to follow this. I love the narrative voice.
