The Painter: A novel | Peter Heller

Pickpick

The protagonist in “The Painter” is somewhat different from many other Heller novels. I very much enjoyed his complexity. The book made me feel, in some ways, similar to how I felt reading “The River”.

NatalieR So far, this is my favorite Heller novel. ❤️ 3w
Pedrocamacho Oh man, @NatalieR! As you might have guessed, I was trying to decide between this one and “The River”! I felt for Jim, even though his violence was always so close to the surface… (edited) 3w
NatalieR @Pedrocamacho Yes, I figured. 😅 I really want to reread The River. It‘s the only one I listened to on audio and it just wasn‘t the same experience I‘ve had with reading his physical books. The Painter has stuck with me. 3w

As far as histories about fish go, this is top notch. But it‘s, well, a history about fish. This book covers the economic history of the market for cod, starting with the Basque of Spain through cod‘s depletion in our lifetime. We learn a lot about the cod itself and countless ancient and newer recipes for all things cod. Having toured the ancient Hanseatic Museum in Norway, I expected a lot more detail about the economics of cod. I just felt ⬇️

Texreader like there was more to be covered. I read this for #Greenland #foodandlit but it was barely mentioned at the beginning. @Catsandbooks 1mo
kspenmoll I admire you reading a book about fish! 🐟 even though I am so connected to water, salt or not, fish are squirmy & slimy & at times scary to me. Maybe it was all the hidden eels that found my young self- YUK- when I swam thru tons of eel grass at the CT shore! 🐍 1mo
Sace I have his history of salt sitting in my shelf and I recently ordered a copy of The Basque History of the World. 1mo

I accidentally used a Everand credit on this when I meant to grab Yukon Alone. After a half hour of confusion about the book being about King Salmon and not an adventure race I figured it out and found the book very interesting. King salmon run along the Yukon River but like many other species are suffering with climate change and overfishing. The author takes a canoe trip to talk to the people who live along the river and see the salmon.

“A spiderweb‘s gleamings in the exposed roots of a cut bank. And in a tailwater pool: the spreading rings of rising trout, dapping silently like slow rain.”

A grand story, with grand lessons and symbolism all in 145 pages.

Forward by Ann Patchett, who brought this book back into print.
