The Tale of Genji | Shikibu Murasaki

I‘m on Ch. 36. Am I a terrible person to be happy that someone has finally—FINALLY—given Genji a dose of his own medicine?!? Yay, Kashiwagi!!

Lindy Well, I didn‘t exactly say yay, but #Genji36 is not a boring chapter! I had a hard time getting over Kashiwagi‘s theft of the cat, and also importuning his wife‘s sister. @Daisey @llwheeler @bianca @saresmoore @bookandcat @mhillis @SoniaC @batsy @KathyR @TheWordJar @Faibka @RachelO @CindyMyLifeIsLit @xicanti 5y

Becoming a nun is a popular option for the women in this novel. I can understand the appeal of retreating from aristocratic expectations and unwanted male attention for Her Highness, the Third Princess, AKA Onna San no Miya (Tyler translation), AKA Nyosan (Waley translation). #Genji36

saresmoore I‘m saying, nun would be my first choice in the context. Would nuns have been allowed to read? Perhaps they‘d have been limited to religious writings? No matter, it‘s still the best option. 5y
Lindy @saresmoore Me too. BTW, what name is this princess given in the Washburn translation? 5y
batsy Absolutely agree with this. (BTW, she's constantly referred to as The Third Princess in Washburn; I think a name was given in an earlier chapter. I'll have to check through the ebook.) 5y

4,098,765th edition, now with new subtitle! “The Tale of Genji: The Vengeance of the Scorned Mistress”

You guys, things are getting interesting! Consequences are being reaped!

#Genji #Genji36

Lindy I like your new subtitle. She‘s more accurately the wife manqué? I‘ve gone googling to find out what kinds of things have been written about Lady Rokujō, the character who became a malevolent spirit. I will make a separate post about her. (edited) 5y
batsy I find the manifestation of this spirit very intriguing, as well! But also in general, being sick or depressed and having it be attributed to malevolent spirits is fascinating. 5y
saresmoore @Lindy Oh, goodness, I had her confused with another of Genji‘s women! I need a family tree, or at least one very long Genji branch. 5y

saresmoore @batsy I imagine most of the maladies are brought on by extreme idleness (and its many consequences). But evil spirits seems like an easier explanation? 5y
saresmoore @Lindy I‘ve amended my title. It‘s interesting how the ikiryō seems to disappear for hundreds of pages, then suddenly re-emerge. The evanescence of life and the unpredictability of spirits are themes? How much of this is social commentary and how much is parabolic/allegorical and/or moral imperative? I‘m doing much mulling. 5y
Lindy @saresmoore Mulling is good. Especially when wine is involved. 😜 5y
saresmoore @Lindy 😂 Too true! 5y

From his early childhood the one thing that he had never been able to endure was the feeling of inferiority. In small things and great it had always been the same: if he could not gain the prize, win the game, receive the highest appointment, he at once conceived the profoundest contempt for himself and felt his whole life to be utterly useless. #boohoo #KashiwagitheCatThief #Genji36

saresmoore Kashiwagi needs a swift kick in the layered robes. 5y
saresmoore Also, I love your hashtag. 5y
Lindy @saresmoore With all that fabric, a kick wouldn‘t do bodily harm, but the smudging and wrinkling of his robes would probably make him feel worse than being bruised. 5y
Daisey With these long chapters, I‘ve fallen behind again, but I‘m going to try to play some catch up tonight since all these posts and hashtags are sounding intriguing. 5y
batsy @Lindy 😂 5y
