Some flaws, but overall good. The lengthy digressions into California's history take away from the narrative and the twists are a little messy but the characters and setting are good. I could see it becoming a series and I would continue reading if so.

@Andrew65

My favorite Cotton Malone book to date!

May was a good reading month for me.
Other high points for the month were:
The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis
Notorious RBG : The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsberg

Andrew65 Snap! I also loved The Masterpiece. 4mo

My #May book for #12BooksFor2023 is The Bishop‘s Pawn. An excellent Cotton Malone thriller centred around what happened in Martin Luther King‘s final days. Always love Cotton Malone books but this is one of the very best and learned a lot about Martin Luther King in this book. This reads exceptionally well as a standalone even though it is a book in a series.

kspenmoll Stacked! Sounds great! 4mo
Andrew65 @kspenmoll Definitely a very enjoyable read. 4mo
Mollyanna Cotton is my book boyfriend. I love these books, can‘t wait to get to this one! 4mo

Andrew65 @Mollyanna He is a wonderful character. If you‘ve not read them you might also be interested in the Ben Hope series by Scott Mariani. If I was in trouble I‘d want Cotton and Ben on my side. 4mo
Mollyanna @Andrew65 I‘ll have to check it out. Looks like Hoopla has the first one…. ‘Cuz I need another series, but if Ben is like Cotton I‘m in. 4mo
Andrew65 @Mollyanna 😂 One of my favourite series. Will be interested to hear what you think if you read it. 4mo
Bluebird This was my May pick too. It‘s also my favorite of the series! 4mo

Wow. Wow. Wow!! I saw this book at Goodwill and waivered over buying it (for a whopping $2.99 lol). It sounded interesting, but I have a pile of books on my TBR stack to get through. Well, my Aunt saw through that lame excuse and bought it for me, and I‘m so glad she did! I loved this story of the Rabishevsky brothers - this was a total page turner that I didn‘t want to put down. What other Andrew Gross books should I read? I‘m hooked now!

Aims42 Themes: 20th Century New York City (1905-1992), Mobsters, Coming of Age stories 5mo

I rarely bail, but 24% in and I simply cannot continue. This book was not written for me. It has some great reviews, but 🤷🏼

EadieB @tove_reads Oh no another bad one! 5mo

Yes, it‘s time to start yet another new series 😍 I really hope it‘s a good one!

robinb It was a 4⭐️ for me with a couple of caveats. But willing to try the second one. 👍😊 5mo
Andrew65 I can get the first 4 of these through my Prime membership, and also have a copy of the fifth. Unless something changes may need to get sixth and last one through Audible. (edited) 5mo
EadieB I‘ve had this book on my shelf for a while and just saw it the other day. 5mo

I hauled a haul 🥰 A little birdy told me the Betrayals was dark academia, so had to feed my obsession.

(Waterstones website, it was Waterstones website that told me...)

Branwen What an excellent book haul! 💕📚 7mo

Bailedbailed

While the premise seemed promising, after a quarter of the way through, I just couldn‘t bring myself to continue. The murder of a 1944 politician in San Francisco— even with the tantalizing prospect that it may be one of three society darlings— failed to capture my interest. Info-dumps galore here slow down the pacing & the social commentary feels at odds with the time period in a jarringly modern way that makes the characters feel inauthentic.
