I first read this as a teenager & have since reread it many times, which is unusual for me. A rollicking tale told by an unreliable narrator, it still feels fresh & funny in the 21st C, so one can only imagine what the Victorians made of it in the nineteenth.
But what‘s not to love about the amoral, cunning heroine Becky Sharp? While she is far from admirable, she is only trying to make her way in the world...
This bookstore in Notting Hill was the inspiration for the same-called movie with High Grant and Julia Roberts. Also very sweet.

pickA pleasant, quick read, this British romance is told from multiple perspectives, but unlike many other recent novels that have attempted this, One Day didn‘t fail miserably (high praise, I know; I‘m a tough customer). With plenty of allusions to British romantic comedies, this tale puts its reader on a bit of an emotional roller coaster, and like the high-speed ride, you know where you‘re going, but that doesn‘t make the trip any less enjoyable.
