Pickpick

Thompson delivered a balanced take on the Hell‘s Angels. He portrayed a quirky bunch of outsiders who came together to form a brotherhood. He educated on how they often fell victim to lies and exaggerations from police and the media to build them as greater risks to the public than they were. He warned how this same group of characters can perform violent acts with little or no provocation to the point of being rightfully hated and vilified.

TheAromaofBooks Thompson's writing is always so engaging. 6mo
JoeMo @TheAromaofBooks you‘re 100% correct…I‘m just not used to him being so seemingly….sober, I guess would be the appropriate word. I know he was a serious journalist for quite some time, but I‘m used to his more drug fueled works fulled with crazy but captivating tangents and such! 😂 5mo
TheAromaofBooks Right? I haven't read this one, but I know it was one of his big deep-dives. My husband is the real fan, so I've only read a scatter-shot selection, and some of his writing is really dated in the sense of I don't really know the details of 1972 politicians haha Although when the husband and I were commuting together, we did listen to Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas as an audiobook and it was great fun. 5mo

We approached our latest book selection episode the way you'd approach a buffet. Taking a little of each item that suits your fancy. We wound up choosing a wide array of essays and short stories to read and we learned some new things about each other. Like the fact that Peter has never seen a John Wayne movie. Enjoy!

1. Yup, I can drive a stick. I learned on a huge Buick station wagon with “three on the tree” which definitely dates me!

2. Can‘t get better than Hunter Thompson and the Great Red Shark — and that dates me too!

#Two4Tuesday. #TheSpineView

Crazeedi I've driven one of those too!!!😉 11mo
TheSpineView I remember those so I must be dated too! Thanks for playing! 11mo
Amiable Ha ha—I had a “three on the tree” too! It was an AMC Hornet. 😳😀 11mo

I didn't *hate* it, but I have very little patience for people sitting around drinking all day while hating on life. Since I just got my hands on the new Elin Hilderbrand there's no need to continue reading it.

Pickpick

My first novel by Hunter S. Thompson and I really liked it. The story of debauchery and ineptitude at a low rate newspaper agency in the early days of Puerto Rico‘s statehood. Lots of boozing and lounging until a violent act throws this story into something unexpected. #ReadingTheAmericas23 #PuertoRico #USVirginIslands

Magpiegem I love his writing, it can take me right to that moment in time. 2y
Cinfhen 💯 @Magpiegem I really got a STRONG sense of time & place 2y
Librarybelle So glad you liked this! 2y
TheAromaofBooks My husband loves Hunter S. Thompson. We've listened to a few of his books on audio while traveling. He's so unafraid to use the knife of mockery wherever he sees fit! 2y
Cinfhen I‘m only familiar with two titles from Thompson @TheAromaofBooks I‘ll have to check out his back list 🤩 2y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, and some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Mehso-so

This book intrigued me as I‘m interested in the psychology of gangs and how they function. Around 1965, Hunter S. Thompson spent about two years hanging out with the Hell‘s Angels motorcycle gang. This was a time period in which the Hell‘s Angels were in their relative height of mayhem, violence, and destruction. This book didn‘t provide what I was hoping to learn. #MountTBR
