Today (November, 7) is International Inuit Day, a holiday established by the Inuit Circumpolar Council representing First Nations people living in Alaska, #Canada, Greenland and Chukotka.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Inuit_Day

And Sweetest Kulu is a lovely book for babies and young children written by an Inuk artist and writer from Nunavut.

In 1848, Captain John Franklin & his crew went missing whilst searching for the Northwest Passage - a route between the Atlantic & the Pacific oceans deep within the Canadian Arctic. If you've ever read 'The Terror' by Dan Simmons, the book was based on that journey. In 2008 comedian & sometime actor, Billy Connolly, completed a 10-week voyage to the area for a TV series & this book is the resulting accompaniment. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf I rather enjoyed this. I've never seen the TV documentary series but if it was as entertaining as the book it must have been good viewing. Alongside his trademark humour, Connolly shows a great deal of understanding & respect for the Inuit culture, although I struggled with the parts about hunting seals etc, so I read those pages rather quickly. Otherwise it was an engaging & informative trip through the NP. 4🌟 (edited) 8mo

Taaqtumi: An Anthology of Arctic Horror Stories | Richard Van Camp, Rachel Qitsualik-Tinsley, Sean Qitsualik-Tinsley, Aviaq Johnston, Anguti Johnston

A collection of chilling stories that draw from ancient fears about monsters hiding and waiting in the darkness, be it in the wilderness or in the recesses of our own psyches, framed by the arctic landscape, where the icy frost of death is an ever-present reality. A nightmarish, and yet somewhat beautiful, set of stories: well written, well crafted and well frightening.

I listened to the audio book which I‘d suggest because the author is an internationally acclaimed Inuit throat singer. She sings between chapters, which adds to the intensity of the book. This book makes you feel all the emotions. The writing is powerful; poetic at times, crude at others. It reads like a memoir at one moment then like folklore the next. It‘s love, hate, sadness, anger, excitement, nostalgia, and regret. It penetrates your soul.

Taaqtumi - an Inuktitut word that means “in the dark“ - is a creepy collection of horror short stories by northern writers set in the arctic. I don't always love short story collections but this one was great. #scarathalonphotochallenge #dark #batbrigade @clwotick @StayCurious @CatsandBooks

Fatty Legs: A True Story | Christy Jordan-Fenton, Margaret Pokiak-Fenton, Liz Amini-Holmes

8 yo Margaret Pokiak, who lives in a village on the high Arctic, wants to attend “outsiders” school (residential school) across the water, a 5-day trip. She pressures her parents for 2+ years and they relent at last. She hates it right off. The mean nun cuts off girls‘ braids, and makes them do the smelliest, dirtiest, back-breaking jobs…the author‘s true story.
