A Shore Thing | Joanna Lowell

#BookBracket2025 for August was easy! The tagged historical queer romance was by far by favourite in an otherwise meh reading month. If you like your historical romances with real, interesting historical details and context, with bonus feminist and trans characters, A Shore Thing is for you!

Martyr! was an easy win against the two it came up against though. Can't beat how beautiful the writing is.

My favorite read of August was Black River Orchard by Chuck Wendig, my first read by this author. #bookbracket2025 #readingbracket2025 #readingbracket #bookbracket

This one kept me guessing. Even when I thought I knew what was up, even when I did, she had me questioning myself. #ReadingBracket #BookBracket2025 #BookBracket #fiction

I read a lot of great nonfiction this month. It was hard to pick just one… so I used both wildcard slots this month, too. #ReadingBracket #BookBracket2025 #BookBracket #nonfiction

My favorite book this month was The Horned God of the Witches and it also beat out Wild Dark Shore for the next bracket 💙

I adored the tagged book. It‘s hard to read because of how horrific some of the abuse is, but she‘s a survivor and it shows in how she tells her story. She led me to The Power of Knitting, which made the list since I had nothing for June for this bracket, too.

This month I chose Faust! It was my first pick. My second for the month is The Satanic Verses and since I didn‘t have a book for June, Rushdie made it on the bracket, too.

CSeydel Very nice! 1mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads What are the directions for this? Thanks!! 😊 1mo
GingerAntics What do you mean? You just pick your favourite book each month and add it to your bracket. I have a fiction bracket and a nonfiction bracket. I‘m not sure there are any hard and fast rules. @CSeydel has the black bracket. She‘ll be able to tell you if there are any hand and fast rules. 1mo

CSeydel Hi @DrSabrinaMoldenReads ! The bracket is just a fun way to rank the books you read during the year. Each month you add your favorite book to that month‘s space in the bracket. Then the books on adjacent space “compete” - you decide which one you liked better, and it advances to the next round. There are two wild card spaces in round 2, to even up the matches. No rules, no prizes - whatever criteria you want, it‘s your bracket. 1mo

Martyr!: A novel | Kaveh Akbar

#BookBracket2025 was very hard for July! I read six 5-star books, including two audio adaptations of all-time favourites, Anne of Green Gables and Dykes to Watch Out For, plus TJR's 1980s lesbian astronaut book and Alison Bechdel's brand new graphic novel. I decided Martyr! was the winner because it's so beautiful/complex, but I had to sneak in DTWOF as a wild card because it was so well done. It was so fun seeing my old comic friends in new form!

I had to sleep overnight on making a decision, but I've chosen Brom's Slewfoot to move on over But Not Too Bold in my #readingbracket2025. It was a very difficult decision! But Not Too Bold holds a special place in my heart! #bookbracket2025 #readingbracket #bookbracket

Hungerstone | Kat Dunn

My favorite read of July was Hungerstone by Kat Dunn—a feminist reimagining of Carmilla, the novella that inspired Dracula. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it couldn‘t top my May favorite, Not Too Bold by Hache Pueyo. That means Not Too Bold advances in my 2025 book bracket competition!
