Just caught this special on over-the-air PBS...one of my favorites that I've seen throughout the 2024 schedule for Native American Heritage Month. Beautiful 🥲🐎💝💝💝.

“Yvette Running Horse Collin‘s recent dissertation, historical documents and oral histories present a compelling new story of the horse in the Americas.“

“Collin currently takes care of over 100 horses she claims to be descendants of the ancient horse of the Americas. Some have manes that grow down to the ground. Some have stripes on their legs. Some have spots all over.

👇

AnnCrystal Some are much smaller than most horses. Some have curly hair.“

“Collin seeks to inspire more research to illuminate the truth behind what the government has labeled as “feral” so that wild horses can be protected by the Indigenous Species Act. Currently, they are being run down and mass slaughtered if they are in the way of certain commercial projects.“

AnnCrystal “The wonderful thing is that we now have Western technology that can provide very accurate dates,” said Collin in a recent interview. “Many studies show that these horses were present after the very same Ice Age that supposedly wiped out them all out.“

TheSpineView I love Appies! I had one when I was young. 1mo

Applies?? Forgive my lack of true equine knowledge. Appaloosa, like in the photo?? As in the The Nez Perce Horse? You had one! Wow, that is fantastic 💕🐎💝.

TheSpineView Yes, I had an Appaloosa as my first horse. I had a pony when I was young. But my first "horse" was the Appie(slang in the horse world). Her name was Tarquita. Loved that horse. I put thousands of miles on those hooves. 1mo

This can be used to introduce discussions about Native American cultures, values, and the significance of storytelling in different traditions. Additionally, students can engage in creative projects, such as art or writing, inspired by the themes of sacrifice and nature in the story.
