New Grub Street: A Novel | George Gissing

Some of my Modern Library collection. Keep promising I will keep them all together but shelf space doesn‘t always work out.The 3 brown ones next to the giant are the earliest ones .I don‘t know if that series ever had dust jackets.They are cloth and/or leatherette and flexible. I‘ll quit nerding out now 😂

The Collected Works of John Reed | John Reed

Continuing our Modern Library conversation, an old ML Giant of U.S.A.Trilogy next to my Reed from 1995 .
Newer ones are the size of the old giants .

vivastory I noticed several Baldwin editions that were also published in '95 & I think are the same size as the Reed 4y

vivastory Library of Congress has collected editions, but the font on those can be really hit & miss. Sometimes it's too small. I try to find the ML or Everyman's editions, even if it's a little more costly. 4y

Aimeesue Ahhhh! I love the littler ones, though. They‘re just such a nice size. I also can‘t stay away from Slightly Foxed editions, even though they‘re much more expenses and have to be shipped from England. 4y

Aimeesue @Leftcoastzen The SF Editions are so lovely. I usually look for them used on Abe, but for my birthday my husband got me a SF subscription that includes one book with each Quarterly. Best present ever! 😄 4y

vivastory Do they still publish hardback? I know that they have a lot of paperbacks, but it seems like Everyman's Library has taken their place in terms of affordable hardcover editions the past few years.. 4y

Leftcoastzen @vivastory I think they still have some in print, my newest one is the writings of John Reed but it was from way back in 1995.Everyman might be doing more titles.There were some new hardcover on Amazon.this one was from 1944 very clean price was $1.65 4y

Aimeesue @vivastory They do publish some, but it looks like they're not all the same size maybe? And they're bigger that the old Blumenthal bindings. Some of the older ones were off- sized, too - the "GIANT" MLs. I have a few of those. 4y

Aimeesue @vivastory I‘d never heard of him, but it seemed like something I should read. I don‘t read much poetry, but it feels like I should. (I‘ll just note here that I CAN recite Jabberwocky and On Flanders Field from memory tho) 4y

vivastory Very impressive, Jabberwocky is one of my favorites. Hirsch is great at being accessible & informative without talking down. He's so genuinely passionate about poetry & it really comes across. 4y
