So excited Cherie Dimaline's newest book arrived in the mail today! I loved THE MARROW THIEVES and have heard good things about this one, too. 🥰 #nativeauthors #bookmail

Reagan I have The Marrow Thieves but haven‘t read it yet. Maybe over the holiday! 5y

The Birchbark House | Louise Erdrich
post image

C and I have been reading THE BIRCHBARK HOUSE by Louise Erdrich together. She's 10, but I think there's something special about read-alouds at any age. I first heard about this book from Dr. Debbie Reese, and honestly, I feel cheated that it was never introduced to me as a kid. The language is so beautifully descriptive, the story is rich and sweet and even humorous at times. It's perfect. ❤ #nativeauthors #historicalfiction #kidlit #unschooling

emtobiasz I just read this one with my homeschool kids book club, and I was expecting mixed reactions, especially with some of the tougher scenes toward the end. Nope— they universally loved it. 5y
lovelybookshelf @emtobiasz awwww I love that! 5y

Indian Horse | Richard Wagamese

Pickpick

This is about trauma and the long road of healing. It's not a fast read, despite its page count (about 220 pages). The narrative is rich, intense, and because it deals with racism and Canada's residential schools, often brutal. This is the kind of book you read slowly, sitting with what's happening and what the implications will be for the character's life. This was my first time reading Wagamese's work, and it won't be my last. #nativeauthors

Suet624 Every time I see this author‘s name come up I get mad at myself for not reading his work yet. 5y
BookNAround This was really a magnificent read, wasn‘t it? 5y
lovelybookshelf @Suet624 I definitely wish I'd read him earlier! 5y
lovelybookshelf @BookNAround It truly was. And I know nothing about hockey and am not into sports, but even though sections had me captivated. 5y

Heart Berries: A Memoir | Terese Mailhot
post image
Pickpick

I listened to the audiobook and was not a fan of the narrator. She read Mailhot's words with a flat, almost bored inflection throughout. That's a shame, because Mailhot's writing is absolutely stunning. So much so that I could feel the beauty of the phrases despite the narrator. This is a compelling, vulnerable, honest memoir. (CW for childhood sexual abuse and neglect, mental illness) #nativeauthors

Heart Berries: A Memoir | Terese Marie Mailhot
post image
Pickpick

Very Intense, brief, lyrical nonlinear memoir. A central theme of this short, jarring little book is inter-generational trauma. This is one of those not-for-everyone-but-truly-excellent stories of someone‘s life where the author sets out to tell things exactly as they are/happened. A hard read, but a beautiful one. I chose this passage because I think it captures some of the beautiful, abstract language used by Mailhot.

Mapping the Interior | Stephen Graham Jones
post image
Pickpick

"Emotionally raw" only begins to describe this book. It's like a fistful of heartache in plain prose. It's such a unique take on grief, loss, and horror. I definitely recommend this one. #mappingtheinterior #stephengrahamjones #nativeauthors #nativeamericanauthors #horror #family #grief #loss #quickreads
