Set in North Dakota at a time in this century when Indian tribes were struggling to keep what little remained of their lands, Tracks is a tale of passion and deep unrest. Over the course of ten crucial years, as tribal land and trust between people erode ceaselessly, men and women are pushed to the brink of their endurance--yet their pride and humor prohibit surrender. The reader will experience shock and pleasure in encountering a group of characters that are compelling and rich in their vigor, clarity, and indomitable vitality.

Bailedbailed

This is a bail for me. I just wasn‘t connecting with it this time around, but I will probably give it another chance eventually. Erdrich‘s writing is generally quite good. Under normal circumstances, I think I would have enjoyed this. Perhaps because this is a prequel and I haven‘t read Love Medicine, or perhaps because of the magical realism elements which made me feel a bit distant from the characters, I just wasn‘t feeling it.

Louise Erdrich is a master!! Beautiful rich story from the early 20th century, about loosing the land and the grief that comes along with that. Nice to see glimpses of previously known characters:)

I tried. I promise I tried. I gave all three of these a shot and I just couldn‘t do it. Tried print and audio. Clearly there is something wrong with me. I just do not enjoy Louise Erdrich. Definitely not her fault. So I have DNF‘d three books in January. Can‘t wait for February #authoramonth crew!

Tamra Her books have been hit and miss for me, but two of them are my favorite reading experiences. Who knows? Sometimes things click and sometimes they don‘t. 🤷🏾‍♀️ 1y
Bklover I am going to try Tracks and LaRose again in the future. It may just be timing. @Tamra 1y

Another #authoramonth read. This book is set before Love Medicine and The Beet Queen but features characters you have met before and giving you backstory that adds so much to what you already knew about them. I am loving spending this time with Erdrich and see myself continuing to read her books past the end of this month.

My last day of Christmas vacation, and I celebrated by reading this in practically one sitting. (One day, anyway.) I have loved Erdrich‘s writing since a friend gifted me with The Roundhouse years ago. And this installment in the Nanapush / Kashpaw / Morrissey families was a treat. #bookspin #authoramonth @TheAromaofBooks @Soubhiville

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 1y
Soubhiville Glad you enjoyed it! 1y
SamAnne I‘ve been wanting to reread this one-and all her early books. 1y
Lcsmcat @SamAnne @Soubhiville This might be a month where I read more than one for this challenge as I have so many on my TBR! 1y

A little over a year ago I was at Mr. Mike‘s Used Books and found a large collection of Erdrich books. So of course I bought them all. 🤷🏻‍♀️ This is my #bookspin for January and also my first #authoramonth selection.

Tamra My favorites of hers so far are The Sentence and this one, which I‘ve read twice if not three times. 1y
Lcsmcat @Tamra I loved Last Report too! The Sentence is waiting still, but maybe this month? I loved The Roundhouse, and basically everything by her that I‘ve read. (edited) 1y
Tamra @Lcsmcat ❤️ I was trying to describe how well she captured living thru the pandemic & the George Floyd outrage without the book necessarily being about those things to my husband last night. It is about the characters and community experiencing & feeling them while trying to live their daily lives. Hard for me to explain. I hope you like to too! (edited) 1y

Erdrich has written four novels about a community of First Nations people of North Dakota. There‘s a lot of characters to get to know but they‘d started to feel like family by the time I finished my first one - Love Medicine. I was so happy to be back amongst them again.
This book gives the back story to a number of characters and explains the feuds and land losses. It‘s the 3rd book published but the 1st in the series if that makes sense. ⬇️

Centique I absolutely loved this - but that was almost a foregone conclusion as I loved Love Medicine. I like multiple narrators, layered perspectives (which this series has by the wagon load) and the insight into a different culture from my own. Plus Erdrich writes characters that are complex and fascinating. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 4y
Centique Although you‘re supposed to read this one first I think - I really enjoyed reading them out of order. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I kept going “oh that‘s why those two don‘t get along” etc etc - I found it fun anyway 😂 4y
Reggie So this isn‘t dystopian or sci-fi? She writes those , too, right? Or no? Either way sounds good! 4y
Centique @Reggie I don‘t know about that. When I googled one of her books came up as Fantasy but nothing else I could see. It wouldn‘t surprise me though - Erdrich can do ANYTHING. 😍 There‘s lots of cross over with the magic/old beliefs side of this story anyway - there‘s ghosts for sure! 4y

Tracks by Louise Erdrich is the first of the Erdrich medicine readalong in Instagram and I have enjoyed the discussion so far, discussing memorable Anishinaabe characters that apparently will be reappearing in several more novels. The two narrators in Tracks - Nanapush and Pauline - are very distinct but Fleur must be the most compelling character.

Reading Envy Podcast 177: An Unnamed Middle Eastern Country (Goals 2020)

Jenny starts off the year discussing reading goals - how did her reading goals end up for 2019, what additional goals did she end up adding, and what goals has she set for 2020? As always I love to hear about your goals for the year.

As the Reading Envy Podcast rolls into its sixth year, there are many more reading adventures to explore.

I didn‘t “get” it. “I” was used in the book, but part of the time “I” was male and part of the time “I” was female. I wasn‘t sure if “I” was switching back and forth somehow or what, but a review I saw said something about there being two narrators, one an old man and one a young woman. Nanapush was the name of the old man “I”, but I don‘t know if it was just a name or if it was meant to represent the native legend of the same name?

Phenomenal. Both were amazing but I preferred Tracks personally. The characters felt so real I was shocked when the audiobook ended and they suddenly didn‘t exist anymore. She‘s the kind of writer who can make you forget that her characters have completely different lives to you, and make it possible to understand anyone with any life. Why isn‘t she more famous??

There's a used bookstore near one of the train stations in KL. It's a place to quietly lose your shit because it's floor to ceiling books. Haphazardly arranged books with no system. So it's manic eyes looking from left to right, right to left, left to right...

This is the #bookhaul from today. Happy to find Tracks; Erdrich is one of the #indigenousauthors I've been meaning to read for an embarrassingly long time. #JuneBookBugs @RealLifeReading

I read this chapter in high school without realizing or remembering that it was part of this book, then many years later a friend recommended it to me and I'm just now reading it. I'm rather superstitious about when it "feels right" to read a book so I'm not sure what to think of all that. But in less navel-gazing news, I am really enjoying Tracks so far.

Not sure if I'm sounding like a broken record here, but I LOVE reading Louise Erdrich when it's the dead of winter. She almost always includes a setting in the bitter cold of North Dakota/Minnesota. I remember reading Tracks during an ice storm that took out hundreds of thousands of people's electricity here in St. Louis 10 years ago. Oh to be nestled in bed under heaps of blankets and kitties. #chillyreads #photoadaynov16

My #FunFridayPhoto is Tracks by Louise Erdrich. Instead of just assigning this read, my 10th grade English teacher read it to us in class. I fell in love with the story. For Christmas that year my mom (also an English teacher) got me Love Medicine, The Beet Queen and Tracks. This copy is 25 years old. 📚
