Pilgrim at Tinker Creek | Dillard Annie

Pickpick

A true religious pilgrimage, even if confined to the few square miles around Tinker Creek, near Dillard's home in Virginia. The journey here is internal. This is the best nature writing I've ever had the pleasure to read, not an ounce of sentimentality or nostalgia, no rote cliches about nature's grandeur. It is grand though, and ugly and mystifying and disgusting and beautiful. Life's mysteries distilled into one tiny plot of land.

The_Penniless_Author Seeking any help I can get - the Litsy app got deleted from my phone and I can't seem to find anywhere (reputable, at least) to download it. Any suggestions? 3d
Suet624 I don‘t understand. It‘s not in the apple store? (edited) 3d
Bklover I just checked the App Store and it was there. Strange. 3d

Suet624 If you have an android and are having troubles,@JulesG has a workaround 3d
julesG The only "reputable" option for Android users is the Amazon app store. But I have no idea how that works. I have used the following workaround several times and it has worked for other Littens too 3d
julesG You need to download the app file and install it manually. Download the APK file here: https://litsy.en.uptodown.com/android Open the APK file. Your phone might say it's from an unreliable source, but you can tell your phone it isn't. This should install the Litsy App on Android. Other sources are:

Suet624 @julesg thank you so much for all this information. 2d
The_Penniless_Author Thanks @julesG! Even after I gave it permission, my phone won't let me download. It says it's only compatible with an older Android operating system thst doesn't include certain necessary security features. Weird... 2d
julesG They haven't updated the app since 2017. 🙄🙄 2d
julesG It's weird, in most cases you can override the security messages and install the app. Wish I could just transport myself over and help you with it. 2d
The_Penniless_Author @julesG Oh, I think I got it. Now I just hope whatever janky website I downloaded this from doesn't infect my phone. 😂 Thanks again! 2d

Enjoying the warm temps outside before the season cools down for good. Listening to either squirrels or birds scratching in a very tall tree next to me. Strawberry Acai Refresher by my side.

Up next. I hope it's a feel good book.

Tamra I just heard an MPR story that referenced Sigurd Olson. 😁 2mo
Blueberry @Tamra Interesting. I'll try to look it up. 2mo
Tamra It was in reference to MN nature observer writer Helen Hoover. New NF is out about Helen. https://northshorejournal.co/news/author-david-hakensen-on-the-life-of-helen-hoo... 2mo

#CharacterCharm Day 29: I have been reading more of the works of #Poet Mary Oliver now that I have quit social media (Facebook, X, Instagram) over the past months. Poetry seems infinitely better for the soul.

I accidentally used a Everand credit on this when I meant to grab Yukon Alone. After a half hour of confusion about the book being about King Salmon and not an adventure race I figured it out and found the book very interesting. King salmon run along the Yukon River but like many other species are suffering with climate change and overfishing. The author takes a canoe trip to talk to the people who live along the river and see the salmon.

This week I‘ve had the opportunity to visit a cousin who‘s been teaching in a dual language village school in Alaska for several years. She shared the essay “In Quinhagak” from this book. It details the writer‘s visit to a village where an archaeological dig is working to preserve a 500 year old village in the same area of Alaska before it‘s washed away by the sea. It was fascinating to read and see details similar to the village where she lives.

jitteryjane724 How wonderful that you could visit! What a cool experience. 6mo

Memoirs aren't always my favorite, but this one was a hit for me on so many levels: I loved the nature and ecology, the exploration of family and belonging and connection to place, defying expectations in a quiet way. I was surprised to learn that Lanham wasn't an experienced writer before this because his prose flows so well, and he does such a great job conveying emotion without becoming sappy (as many memoirs do). Loved this one!
