Oh man, did I go on a JOURNEY with this one! I was up and down. Midway, I was lagging. But I pushed through and I‘m glad I did. Evil cannot survive in the face of Hope. Think of what humans can be. Create the future you want. Make your inside face more beautiful than your outside face. 😊 I cared about the characters. Were there flaws? Sure, but I don‘t think they detract from the overall feeling this left. #PBSGreatAmericanRead
I know this is an unpopular opinion and I am SO sorry! I just went back & forth with this one. I wanted more of Einstein and The Outsider. The end was honestly so good. I really did love Einstein so much. I just didn‘t need to be hammered with all that detail and I could‘ve used less Travis/Nora. (Again, I‘m not big on romance.) So I‘m just not sure how I felt about this. I didn‘t love it, but I didn‘t hate it either. #PBSGreatAmericanRead

Pickles Gap... It had only sprung up because a fool from north Georgia named Wesley Pickles had gotten himself and his family lost in the mesquites for about ten days. When he finally found a clearing, he wouldn‘t leave it, and Pickles Gap came into being, mainly attracting travelers like its founder, which is to say people too weak-willed to be able to negotiate a few hundred miles of mesquite thicket #without losing their nerve.”

This is so beautifully written. With vernacular dialogue and lyrical prose she illustrates the story with her words. As soon as I shut this book I wanted to read this all over again.

“But I don‘t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can‘t help that," said the Cat: "we‘re all mad here. I‘m mad. You‘re mad."
"How do you know I‘m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn‘t have come here.”

“It wasn't the cider which made me surpass myself, it was this liberation we had torn from the gray encroachments of 1943, the escape we had concocted, this afternoon of momentary, illusory, and separate peace.”

''Soda fought for fun, Steve for hatred, Darry for pride, and Two-Bit for conformity. Why do I fight? I thought, and couldn't think of any real good reason. There isn't any real good reason for fighting except self-defense.''
