Rebecca
Rebecca | Daphne Du Maurier, Dame
With these words, the reader is ushered into an isolated gray stone mansion on the windswept Cornish coast, as the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter recalls the chilling events that transpired as she began her new life as the young bride of a husband she barely knew. For in every corner of every room were phantoms of a time dead but not forgotten a past devotedly preserved by the sinister housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers: a suite immaculate and untouched, clothing laid out and ready to be worn, but not by any of the great house's current occupants. With an eerie presentiment of evil tightening her heart, the second Mrs. de Winter walked in the shadow of her mysterious predecessor, determined to uncover the darkest secrets and shattering truths about Maxim's first wife the late and hauntingly beautiful Rebecca. This special edition of "Rebecca" includes excerpts from Daphne du Maurier's "The Rebecca Notebook and Other Memories," an essay on the real Manderley, du Maurier's original epilogue to the book, and more.

Today‘s Question

Which book when you finally read it, after it sitting on your TBR for years, did you say to yourself I wish I‘d read this sooner!

#WhyDidIWait #KeepLitsyActive

Andrew65 For me it would be Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier which I Read last weekend and struggled to put it down (edited) 4w
Kimberlone My sister gave me this book for Christmas a few years ago and it took me awhile to get to it, but I was so angry with myself that I waited so long to read it because now it‘s one of my favorites 4w

I‘ve found a new favourite book! Why didn‘t I read this book many years ago, a really special book that surprised me at so many points in the book. If you haven‘t read it I fully recommend it to you. Mrs Danvers is quite some character - what a horrible woman. Couldn‘t put this down and just read on and on and on. Just regret having finished it so quickly. Off to find more books by Daphne Du Maurier. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️

Kaila-ann I have a copy of this, should probably bump this up at some point. 1mo

Not at all what I expected. I thought it would be creepier - that Rebecca would haunt the place more, maybe even be secretly living in the west wing. So I was therefore more surprised by the twist than I normally would be.
Now that I‘ve finished it and can look at what it is rather than what I thought it would be, I can appreciate the reflections of Jane Eyre and the duality of the Mrs de Winters. Looking forward to discussing with my book club.

Cathythoughts I havnt read yet ... but the old movie is really fabulous 2mo

When I think of haunted I think of the first line of Rebecca.

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.”

Sometimes we‘re haunted by ghosts, and sometimes we‘re haunted by memories.

Now I want to read this book again. I wonder if there‘s any way I can fit it in this month?

Totally spent after the wild ride Daphne du Maurier‘s Rebecca took me on. After a slower-paced yet meticulously crafted first half, the second half was twist after turn, with grim revelations and suspense-filled moments that took me in directions I didn‘t expect. I can see why it‘s a favourite of so many, and it absolutely lived up to my high hopes after reading and loving My Cousin Rachel.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled They‘re all good! Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet are her most popular, I think, but The Little Stranger is one helluva creepy story that‘s good for October! 2mo

“Rebecca, always Rebecca. I should never be rid of Rebecca”, laments the young second Mrs de Winter, timid and naive, who is in fear of the housekeeper. Nothing is at it seems in this novel of love and suspense. Loved it.

I couldn‘t stand the narrator for the first half of the book. Kept having to set the book down and walk away because I was sick of spending time with her and her “woe is me, I‘m so pitiful and inferior, wah wah” attitude. The second half bumped it from a pan to so-so. Definitely very atmospheric, and I did like Manderley. Mrs. Danvers was creepy, but I didn‘t hate her. Maybe because I get so immersed in books, it was too unpleasant for me.

I was on edge the entire book waiting as our narrator learns the secrets of Maxim, Rebecca, and Manderley. The constant sense of apprehension felt by the narrator is also felt by the reader. I did skim some of the lengthier descriptions bc I needed to know how it would resolve. The scenes with Mrs. Danvers in particular will continue to haunt me. Manderely and what goes on within its walls will stay with me. #wonderwall #anglophileapril

Day 21 #AdventRecommends

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

I picked up this book in an attempt to broaden my reading beyond YA fiction. Although it took me a while to read, I really enjoyed it, especially the ending.

I also had an interesting discussion about the unusual conflict between living (Rebecca) and dead (the late Mrs de Winter) which I didn't think about until after I had finished 😂

Qpri Really a great book! It was also very interesting to read about Daphne du Maurier‘s life 📚😊 12mo

Pickpick

Du Maurier was only 31 when Rebecca was published, yet she was already a master at creating an atmosphere of foreboding and insidious evil. She captures the nuances of human behavior and emotions beautifully and adeptly. I‘m curious now to see some of the film adaptations! Photo: Daphne du Maurier ca. 1930. #audiobook

IamIamIam Oh my goodness, she's Zooey Deschanel's doppelganger! 13mo
MaGoose I love the b&w movie version with Sir Lawrence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. This version is probably from the late 1930s or '40s and is the only one I've seen. I can borrow it from the local library. 13mo
Louise @IamIamIam Now that you mention it, yeah, I can see the resemblance! 13mo

Louise @MaGoose Oh, that sounds like a great version to get from the library! I‘ll see if ours has it! 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly I‘ve been hearing a lot about this book—I think there‘s an upcoming movie. I really ought to read it. 12mo
Louise @Clare-Dragonfly Yes, I read today that Netflix is producing a new adaptation with Lily James as the main character. Maybe that‘s why I had to wait so long to get the audiobook from Libby. I‘d like to see some older film versions as well. The book is so well-written. 12mo
CaramelLunacy We watched the Hitchcock version in a film class I took and found it very atmospheric. 12mo
Louise @CaramelLunacy I‘m curious to see that version! I just learned a few days ago that Hitchcock‘s The Birds was based on a short story by Du Maurier. I‘m curious to read that short story too! 12mo
CaramelLunacy @Louise i didn't know the birds was also based on a story! Will have to put that on the list 12mo

Finally finished Rebecca and loved it! Took me way too long to read though.

Louise I‘m in the middle of the audiobook right now. I feel the same way. Why did it take me so long to read it (besides being on a very long Libby waitlist)? It‘s so beautifully written! 13mo
AmyG Good to hear you liked it. I have always been meaning to read it...and will now do it for #Booked2019 challenge. 13mo

Yay! That might actually work.

Anna40 Hmmm. Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine cannot be replaced... can't see how this works... sorry 13mo
Moray_Reads @Anna40 I adore the Olivier/Fontaine version. I'm also a little tired of seeing Lily Collins in Everything 13mo
tina_b.ooks It's gonna be hard, if not impossible, to compete with the Hitchcock version. 13mo
sudi Love this casting, but i never watched the Hitchcock version, so i have nothing to compare it to. 13mo

@Librarybelle beat me to it, but since it is too dark to take another pic, and since Mrs. Danvers is a serious #evilwoman, I‘m going with Rebecca for today anyway
