Rebecca
Rebecca | Daphne Du Maurier, Dame
With these words, the reader is ushered into an isolated gray stone mansion on the windswept Cornish coast, as the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter recalls the chilling events that transpired as she began her new life as the young bride of a husband she barely knew. For in every corner of every room were phantoms of a time dead but not forgotten a past devotedly preserved by the sinister housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers: a suite immaculate and untouched, clothing laid out and ready to be worn, but not by any of the great house's current occupants. With an eerie presentiment of evil tightening her heart, the second Mrs. de Winter walked in the shadow of her mysterious predecessor, determined to uncover the darkest secrets and shattering truths about Maxim's first wife the late and hauntingly beautiful Rebecca. This special edition of "Rebecca" includes excerpts from Daphne du Maurier's "The Rebecca Notebook and Other Memories," an essay on the real Manderley, du Maurier's original epilogue to the book, and more.

I haven‘t been listening to this a chapter a day, but I downloaded it over the weekend to catch up. Then I just had to finish the last couple chapters last night. Even as a reread, it‘s so suspenseful. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am glad I made the time to listen again.

This was my FB memory today. 14 years ago, I apparently loved the Ridiculously Simplified Synopsis feature on Shelfari. Can you write a synopsis of your favorite book in 115 characters or less? Here's mine: Evil b*tch haunts shrinking violet in gloomy castle by the sea guarded by venomous woman in black.

What‘s yours????

dabbe I don't have any, but boy, do I have a book! It's called ABRIDGED CLASSICS by John Atkinson. Have you heard of it? Here are some faves:
WAR AND PEACE: “Everyone is sad. It snows a lot.“
GRAPES OF WRATH: “Farming sucks. Road trip! Road trip sucks.“
DON QUIXOTE: Guy attacks windmills; also, he's mad.“
THE SUN ALSO RISES: The Lost Generation gets drunk, and they're still lost.“
MOBY DICK: Man vs. whale; whale wins. 😃

I'm embarrassed to say that this has been on my bookshelf for years. It never appealed to me.

I picked it up on a whim, and I was blown away. The writing is stunning. I think it's the most beautifully written book that I've ever read. The character and plot developments are phenomenal. A book way ahead of its time. I have added to my three favourite books ever. I've also ordered several more by the author.

It's an absolute classic. Masterpiece.

dabbe In my top five of all time, too! Have you seen the 1940 film starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine? It's a must-see, too! 🧡🎃🧡 1y
jamield1911 @dabbe I've not seen it! I will add to my watch list x 1y
dabbe @jamield1993 The lady who plays Mrs. Danvers is one of the scariest portrayals I've ever seen! 1y

#authoramonth As much as I read I was a little shocked to realize I haven‘t read Rebecca. I‘ve seen the original movie many times, none of the remakes.
Since there is a new remake, the library has a waitlist.
A good excuse to mask up & give my local used bookstore some business! I‘m glad the owner knows some people love the old hardcovers just cuz.Not sure if I will get to The Parasites this month but couldn‘t resist.

KCofKaysville I liked the old movie too, but still have not read it.

I‘ve always loved the 1940 Hitchcock adaptation of Rebecca. I watched the new one a few weeks ago and it was just okay imo. I don‘t know why it‘s taken me so long to read this book, but I‘m so glad I finally did! It‘s so well-written and I had a hard time putting it down, even though I knew about all the plot twists. I read it slowly over the last couple of weeks and now I have a book hangover! 5⭐️

GingerAntics Disagree!!! Who came up with this idea?! Sheesh. 4y
DGRachel For me, it‘s a firm disagree. Some of the best, most transporting books I‘ve read this year have been 2020 releases. That being said, if it works for the article‘s author or for anyone else, that‘s great. I‘m not raining on anyone‘s book parade. 😇 4y
TheBookAddict Hmmm. I don‘t go purposely looking for old or new books. I just go with what catches my eye. If I‘m browsing through our local library‘s website it‘s usually a cover that draws my attention. If I‘m at the middle school library I work at it‘s usually a book that I‘ve had a conversation about or a book that I‘ve noticed many kids borrow. If I‘m interested by the synopsis or the conversation I give it a try. It has gotten me out of my reading slump. 4y
See All 11 Comments
TheBookAddict Most of the books I‘ve read using those methods recently have been enjoyable in their own way. I have noticed that most of them are new or newish books. I‘m kind of neutral on the subject, so I say go with what works for you and what you enjoy. Go with what brings you joy instead of forcing yourself to go with what is popular or what others say is best. Life is too short to torture yourself, so instead enjoy yourself. 😊👍🏽 4y
TrishB Just read what you want. 😁 4y
Susanita I‘m with @TrishB ! 4y
TheAromaofBooks I read whatever sounds good, old or new. However, I do know a lot of people who are very caught up in the ARC review cycle & so are constantly “obligated“ to read only new books, which would be very stressful for me! 4y
Scochrane26 I read a mix of old & new books, but I am often at least a year or 2 behind. I‘ve read hardly any books on the GR voting this year. I haven‘t noticed a difference though in how I feel about old vs new. (edited) 4y
Billypar I think this is one of those cases of the editors choosing a more provocative, click-baitish title than fits the article. The author isn't advocating that people stop reading new books, just that since she started reading more older books, she's found them more immersive and easier to shut out the anxiety of current events. So I agree with the author, but not the title. I personally enjoy cycling between new and backlist books. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics @DGRachel @TheBookAddict @TrishB @Susanita @TheAromaofBooks @Scochrane26 @Billypar I loved the intense opinions on this one! I agree wholeheartedly with @TrishB and @Billypar but the irony is I rarely read new books because I prefer cheaper smaller paperbacks. But by golly if I want to buy a brand spanking new hardback, I‘m gonna read it when I darn well please. 😄 I do think that headline was click-bait. 4y
GingerAntics After reading the article, it definitely was click bait. In fact, it seems a bit pretentious. In a pandemic, you should be reading classics, not new books. 🙄 Classics aren‘t everyone‘s cup of tea. In fact, the books she talked about having read recently, I bailed on half of them because I couldn‘t stand them. It was an opinion piece with a click bait title, and nothing more. I found myself rolling my eyes at most it it while I was reading. 4y

Guess what book my son‘s going to be reading in his freshman pre-AP English class? Can you say it with me? Yaaaaay! This was my favorite and first adult novel I read when I was in late elementary school. I hate this cover. I‘ve found a new favourite book! Why didn‘t I read this book many years ago, a really special book that surprised me at so many points in the book. If you haven‘t read it I fully recommend it to you. Mrs Danvers is quite some character - what a horrible woman. Couldn‘t put this down and just read on and on and on. Just regret having finished it so quickly. Off to find more books by Daphne Du Maurier. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️

Kaila-ann I have a copy of this, should probably bump this up at some point. 5y
umbrellagirl Try Jamaica Inn next 🙂 5y

umbrellagirl @EadieB ooo that‘s another good one 👍🏻 5y
EadieB @umbrellagirl Have you read it? 5y
ImperfectCJ This reminds me that I need to read more du Maurier. I've read The Parasites and a collection of her short stories, including "The Birds" upon which the Alfred Hitchcock movie was based, and loved both. 5y
rwmg Can I recommend 5y
jillrhudy A favorite! I've also read The Parasites, The House on the Strand, and My Cousin Rachel mentioned above plus some of her short stories. I own Frenchman's Creek but haven't read it yet. 5y
Lizpixie I‘m another that hasn‘t read it yet. I do have a beautiful anniversary edition of it, just haven‘t picked it up to read. I need to fix that! 5y
ljuliel That‘s the EXACT same thing I said when I read it : why didn‘t you read this sooner ? It is so good. Another favorite that‘s almost as good is My Cousin Rachel. Sometimes I think they‘d be tied for equally good. 5y
youneverarrived It‘s such a memorable book 💙 5y
Andrew65 Thanks everyone, now got a short list of recommended books by her to read next. 😊👍 @umbrellagirl @EadieB @ImperfectCJ @rwmg @jillrhudy @ljuliel 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I have collected almost all of her books but only read a few. 5y

Not at all what I expected. I thought it would be creepier - that Rebecca would haunt the place more, maybe even be secretly living in the west wing. So I was therefore more surprised by the twist than I normally would be.
Now that I‘ve finished it and can look at what it is rather than what I thought it would be, I can appreciate the reflections of Jane Eyre and the duality of the Mrs de Winters. Looking forward to discussing with my book club.

Cathythoughts I havnt read yet ... but the old movie is really fabulous 5y

When I think of haunted I think of the first line of Rebecca.

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.”

Sometimes we‘re haunted by ghosts, and sometimes we‘re haunted by memories.

Now I want to read this book again. I wonder if there‘s any way I can fit it in this month?

Totally spent after the wild ride Daphne du Maurier‘s Rebecca took me on. After a slower-paced yet meticulously crafted first half, the second half was twist after turn, with grim revelations and suspense-filled moments that took me in directions I didn‘t expect. I can see why it‘s a favourite of so many, and it absolutely lived up to my high hopes after reading and loving My Cousin Rachel.

Cinfhen Pretty photo 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I love Dame Daphne so much! Have you read Sarah Waters? I find her writing to have a similar gothic feel. 5y
LeahBergen I ❤️ this book! 5y

KerriNTurner @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled no I haven‘t, will have to try her out. Is there any book in particular you‘d recommend starting with? 5y
KerriNTurner @LeahBergen it was wonderful! 5y
KerriNTurner @Cinfhen thank you! 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled They‘re all good! Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet are her most popular, I think, but The Little Stranger is one helluva creepy story that‘s good for October! 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Also - just saw you‘re the author of The Last Days of the Romanov Dancers! Im adding that to my Amazon wishlist! I‘m always on the lookout for novels set in Russia, especially during the Revolution. Looks right up my alley 👍 5y
LeahBergen And I second @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled recommendation of Sarah Waters. 👍🏻 5y

This was a slow burn, and I'm glad I started with the audiobook and switched to print around chapter 16 (.../when I couldn't renew my Libby loan). So many reactions! So many things to discuss!

“Rebecca, always Rebecca. I should never be rid of Rebecca”, laments the young second Mrs de Winter, timid and naive, who is in fear of the housekeeper. Nothing is at it seems in this novel of love and suspense. Loved it.

Spooky and DEEPLY atmospheric. It has a strong cinematic air and I think I‘ll check out the Hitchcock adaptation soon. A good read for fall. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book 27/30 for #BFCR2

Hufflepuffle I need to read this! I keep picking it up and putting it back in book stores but I definitely need to read it! 5y
Kimberlone I love the Hitchcock movie! One of my favorite movies of all time. I‘ve probably watched it at least 10 tomes 5y

Mehso-so

I couldn‘t stand the narrator for the first half of the book. Kept having to set the book down and walk away because I was sick of spending time with her and her “woe is me, I‘m so pitiful and inferior, wah wah” attitude. The second half bumped it from a pan to so-so. Definitely very atmospheric, and I did like Manderley. Mrs. Danvers was creepy, but I didn‘t hate her. Maybe because I get so immersed in books, it was too unpleasant for me.
