I am NOT enjoying the Anna parts - the going-backwards-in-time ain‘t working for me. But I am already heartbroken for the Anastasia storyline. I am about 75% in.

Hooked_on_books I didn‘t love the backward telling of this, either, but at the end it made sense. For me, this is her weakest book. Her best, by far, is one I strongly recommend if you haven‘t read it:

#bookclub Enjoyed this one to my great relief. I haven‘t been having the best of times with my club's choices so far. A couple of maybe minor quibbles: I didn‘t understand the use of “Ya” in the dialogue, and was not impressed with the flippant mention of a child murder case that, to me, is very sad and shouldn‘t be a joke. Also, I hate wearing yoga pants! 1/2 ⬇️

BkClubCare I read it as YEAH or YEA ; “ya” doesn‘t really work for me in that pronunciation. And since this book is set in Kansas, it really didn‘t work. 🤣 3y

If the TOB had been around in 1980 (81?), this would have been selected. What a weird odd story!! Not what I expected; cannot wait to watch the movie 🎥
I can‘t give it 5 slices of pie because it just confounded me at the last page but now, as I think about it, (and I realize she hd some very worthy pie mentions, ahem), I just may bump it up to a FIVE. Definitely a PICK 👏 But what WAS this? Mental health in families? Living on your own terms?!

Look at Me | Anita Brookner

I have read 7 novels by Elizabeth Taylor, 3 by Anita Brookner, & 1 by Barbara Pym, & I love Brookner‘s style the most.

I shifted my rating for the tagged book to 5⭐️ because I just can‘t stop thinking about it. I pick up the book now and then to reread some parts because it‘s just brilliant! Yes, I‘m nursing book hangover now 😅 It‘s truly the gold standard for spinster lit!

Thank God she wrote a lot. I have 21 more titles to explore 🎉

LeahBergen I‘ve only read a couple but I‘ve been grabbing Brookner novels whenever I see them for a couple of dollars at charity shops. 😆 3y
