Hollow Kingdom
Hollow Kingdom | Kira Jane Buxton
One pet crow fights to save humanity from an apocalypse in this uniquely hilarious debut from a genre-bending literary author. S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (those idiots), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos . Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to feel like something isn't quite right. His most tried-and-true remedies--from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis--fail to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he discovers that the neighbors are devouring each other and the local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle. Humanity's extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow whose knowledge of the world around him comes from his TV-watching education. Hollow Kingdom is a humorous, big-hearted, and boundlessly beautiful romp through the apocalypse and the world that comes after, where even a cowardly crow can become a hero.

S.T., a plucky Cheeto loving crow, is out to save the world of the humans after a mysterious illness over takes them.

I loved S.T.‘s narration, plus the other animals that occasionally voiced a chapter. I did, though, find this worked better for me as a novel I dipped in and out, rather than reading it for long stretches.

Her writing is hilarious!! I was laughing out loud and marking passages to save.
But the plot was repetitive and by 50% in the humor just couldn‘t carry it alone.

For nearly the first 200 pages of this book I totally hated it. I kept pushing through because it is such a unique perspective on an apocalyptic/zombie/extinction tale but it was an absolute chore. Toward the end I did start to enjoy it more but I think this is just one of those books that you either love or loathe. There is some beautiful brilliant writing happening here but it just wasn't for me.

So I can't decide if I want to give this 3.5 stars orf 4 stars. I loved the beginning and the middle but the end made me sad, dammit! I laughed a lot (and cried a little) and the audio was wonderful, so I guess I have my answer, 4 stars. It was very interesting reading a whole book from animal POVs! S.T. and Dennis are going down as one of my favorite animal duos. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

If you like books that @Liberty call‘s bananapants there‘s a good chance this book is for you. A domesticated crow is going to save the world. Maybe? Also, a touch a social commentary on our over-connectedness to our devices runs through the book. It‘s a good take on the post-apocalyptic genre.

This book has been getting a lot of buzz and a lot of positive reviews but it just didn‘t land right for me. I was all in for the majorly creative premise - a domesticated crow as our zombie novel protagonist who travels with his loyal dog companion - but I felt like the book never delivered satisfactorily on that premise. Some funny moments, some surprisingly poignant moments, but pacing problems and plot holes really took me out of it.

I freaking loved this book! The story of the zombie apocalypse told by a domesticated crow. Raised by Big Jim, not the most "woke" human, he has some very skewed ideas about life. He calls all humans Mofos, as Big Jim told him we are. Loved the writing and ST's fowl mouth, pun intended! Favorite book of the year so far.

I absolutely ADORED this book! Quirky, insanely creative, beautifully written, and the funniest book I‘ve read in years. A domesticated, foul-mouthed crow teams up with a goofy, good natured blood hound to go beyond their backyard to find out what‘s happening to all the humans. Their owner Big Jim is behaving strangely, and soon they discover that something is clearly amiss with all humankind. It falls to the animal kingdom to set things right.

The writing in this one was often quite good, but it was sometimes hard to take it seriously. My big issues, though, were the sophomoric humor and that it went on for about 100 pages too long. 3⭐️

Albeit the slow middle, S.T‘s plucky personality and hilarious but wise observations of the human world, paired with Dennis the bloodhound, a loyal, slobbering sweetheart, propelled the book. Not forgetting Genghis Cat (My oh my, what cattitude! LOL) and Winnie the Poodle too, whose brief appearances & account on the apocalypse were like that salt & pepper you never thought you‘d need until you had it.

A keeper!

I may be enjoying this post- apocalypse tale a bit too much, but to be fair, it does star three of my favorite animals.

TamTracy I‘ve heard this was hysterical. What do you think? 1mo
Aimeesue @TamTracy It's funny in spots, and ST's observations about humans are amusing, but I wouldn't classify it as "hysterical." Kinda depends on what kind of humour you like - some of its pretty dark, so I can see why some don't quite get it. ST can be pretty crass, so I'd guess that that's also why some find it off-putting. I personally am enjoying it! 1mo

The apocalypse told from the POV of a human-loving, domesticated crow? Yes, please.

This is the funniest book I've ever read. I was literally laughing out loud every page. But it's more than just humorous. The prose was beautifully written (so poetic). There were so many brilliant, heart-wrenching parts. I even cried at one point. It was a story of overcoming your worst fears to save the ones you love, and it was wonderfully done.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An apocalyptic tale of poetic trees, amorous squirrels, zombies, and zoo animals narrated by a foul-mouthed, funny-ass domesticated crow. Something is happening to the Mofos (humans) so S.T. and his canine pal set out to see wtf is going on. Together with other domesticated creatures, they navigate their new existence. It‘s a sharp, but oddly tender story laced with golden pop culture references. So entertaining! Great debut.

I get why reviews for this book have been mixed but personally I loved it. It was a roller coaster ride and enjoyed that the narrator was a loud human loving crow. My one complaint is that I found the element about humanity‘s relationship to technology overly simplistic, which annoyed me. Other than that it was a very good story and the audiobook has a great choice of narrator.

This book is not for me, but I can‘t pan it. There are some funny elements and I love that it is narrated by a domesticated crow, but the only reason I finished is because it counts for a hard-to-fill challenge spot. The author breaks my cardinal rule of books with dogs and I‘m going to be mad about that for awhile. 😡 Started in print but finished on audio so I could do other things.
