In February 2019 I was supposed to see this in Cleveland but there was a snowstorm and I couldn‘t get there. In March the world shut down. Finally seeing it in Akron. So excited!!!

2020 #70 Oh my...I HATED the way the story jumped around. I understand the author‘s reason for constructing the timeline in this way but it frustrated me every single time she made the “time jump.” I will admit I struggled to finish the book, at times, but the story is compelling. I fell in love with Russian history when I visited St Petersburg so the subject matter and locations were of particular interest to me.

I absolutely loved the Anastasia portions of the story. I have to say I‘m not sure what telling the Anna portions of the story backwards added to the text. I could‘ve read a whole book from Anastasia‘s perspective. Lawhon is a good storyteller and sucks you in to what‘s happening. I would read another by her, just hopefully without a reverse narrative. If you‘re fascinated by the myth of Anastasia, then this is definitely for you!

I love dual timelines and I like the concept of one told backward. However, due to my school schedule, I had to go back and forth between audio and reading with breaks in between. So it was a bit hard to follow. Of course, I loved reading about Anastasia. If you‘ve always been enamored with her, give this a shot.

Tracyantoon I think the intrigue about Anastasia‘s escape and her young age have helped contribute to the lore of the Romanovs. 4y

sblbooks 1 the age of the children. 2 The Romanov's are part English, and so many people in the US come from English backgrounds, we are more familiar with that royal family. 4y

Deblovestoread I had forgotten the English connection. I am curious about England‘s reaction to this tragedy. Something to google. 4y

Butterfinger I agree with all above, but I think it was also the beginning of Communism, the #1 enemy for democratic nations for so long. We needed something. 4y

megnews Read! @Kdgordon88 I agree they adapting to the new normal somewhat. I think it was hardest for Alexandra. The girls were still young but she had solidified expectations of how life should be and she should be treated. 4y

Butterfinger I don't think I would have allowed my children to get so cozy with the guards - making sure they had a Christmas tree and presents. It obscured boundaries, especially for the youngest ones. 4y

sblbooks Attention-seeking caused by mental illness, maybe. I agree with @Tracyantoon Anna definitely believed she was Anastasia. 4y

Deblovestoread I do think she had some mental illness and her desire to escape her own life morphed into her desire to be someone else. Having people believe she was Anastasia and propping up the lie would encourage her. But if she were 100% lucid I think she would know she was not Anastasia. 4y

megnews I agree with mental illness. She found a much more comfortable lifestyle. If you live a lie for that long, I think you‘d start to believe it. 4y

Butterfinger She kept finding sponsors. How did she not get arrested for blowing up the armaments factory? I know she didn't do it intentionally, but I think people were looking for her. 4y

megnews I‘m sure there were many in the family hoping they survived. With their bodies not found, family would want to hold out hope. With Nikolai‘s sister looking for them, that probably made the press and turned it into a fairy tale with the hope of a happy ending. Who doesn‘t love a princess? 4y

Butterfinger The Bolsheviks and then the Communists were so secretive about it. I think they were so hushup because of the relatives in all the European Royal families. They had just come out of one war, starting a dictatorship, and they couldn't give anymore soldiers or money to another war. 4y

Readswithcoffee At first it was extremely confusing for me. A big factor was that I was only able to read small sections at a time and was losing the thread. Once I realized what was happening, I actually started over and then it was better. (edited) 4y

Tracyantoon I found it confusing with the dual timelines. Every book I‘ve read with the backwards timeline though has been tough for me. I see the necessity for it but I know I missed a lot because of it. 4y

CoffeeNBooks I found it very confusing at first, and almost gave up on the book, but then I got used to the way the two timelines were being presented. 4y

megnews I love dual timelines. I‘ve read ones that may take you to the past but not an actual timeline going backwards. It is a unique concept to build tension. It felt like waiting for two trains to collide. But it was better in theory as I find it hard to follow. 4y

Butterfinger I thought it was brilliant and unique. Even to the very end, you saw the connection between Anna's wounds and what happened to Anastasia. 4y

thereadingowlvina I don't mind dual timelines but I really don't like how this story was told in non-linear timelines. It was too jumpy and too confusing for me. I almost DNF because of that but I'm too curious about the plot to give up too 😬 4y

Tracyantoon I didn‘t know anything about either Anastasia (other than watching the animated Anastasia movie as a kid). As I started reading curiosity got the better of me and I googled them both. Wish I hadn‘t spoiled it but it was still very interesting! 4y

Readswithcoffee I didn‘t know anything about either of them, only the Romanov family generally. I‘m inspired to google them now! 4y

Deblovestoread Many years ago I went through a period of being deeply interested in Russia and its history. I know about the Romanovs and their lives but only a little about Anna Anderson and her claim to be Anastasia. Even knowing the outcome some part of me still wanted her to be the princess. 4y

sblbooks I knew about the romanoffs, and have read several books on this topic. there was a 20/20 segment about Anna Anderson years ago, that I watched so I knew about that too. The book would have been more interesting if I did not know anyting, but it's still worth the read. 4y

megnews I knew about the Romanovs. I knew of Anna Anderson but didn‘t realize her claims had been found false. Like @kdgordon88, I‘ve always wished Anastasia survived! 4y

Butterfinger I have been fascinated by the Romanov family since the 80s and I knew about the movie made in the 50s, but I just thought it was an urban legend type thing. Till this book, I didn't know Anna Anderson was real. I subscribed to Time magazine when the bodies were found and genetic testing proved that no one survived. It broke my heart. I still enjoy fiction about Anastasia. The Fox animated version is one of my favorite movies. 4y

The timelines in this book were really confusing at first. I was reading it in small bits and that did NOT work for me. I almost didn‘t finish it, but I‘m glad I kept reading. It turned out to be a very good book.

Loving this part of history, I knew the outcome. I was interested in how Lawhon would interpret it. It was BRILLIANT!!! The dual timelines: One moved forward only two years as the second timeline began in the late 60s and moved backward. They both culminated together in a very explosive way. Even if you knew everything, Lawhon still had you hoping that science was wrong.

I know. I'm being vague so you should read it.

I almost gave up on this book, but then decided to listen to the audiobook instead, which I really liked. I understand why the story required jumping back and forth in the timeline, but it almost seemed to be too much at times. I liked how well the author brought everything together at the end of the story.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I didn‘t love this book. It has taken me a month to listen to the audio. I wanted to finish it, but I also wasn‘t interested enough to listen to it quickly. I liked the Anastasia storyline better because that‘s the main reason I wanted to read this. The reverse timeline with Anna bugged me. I feel like it dragged a bit toward the end. Maybe I need to read a NF book about the Romanovs instead of HF.
