Everybody's Son: A Novel | Thrity Umrigar
post image

I did a large Venetian puzzle while I finished my first Thrity Umrigar. I‘ve gotta say, I thought she‘d deliver something much better than this book, which was entirely EXPECTED at every turn. Only one minor surprise in the whole thing, without the emotional resonance that might‘ve made up for its predictability. Even though people seem to agree this is her worst book, I won‘t rush to read her again. #audiopuzzling

Some of this really worked for me, other parts didn‘t so much. Really enjoyed the premise though 👍

I really didn‘t expect to like this book as much as I did! True, it was serious and pretty heavy- handed, but the characters leapt off the page. They were vivid and sympathetic- this really is essential reading for teens.

Last book for this week's homework! I really should've done some of this over spring break, yeesh. 😮‍💨

TheBookHippie I love this book. 2y
Rachel.Rencher @TheBookHippie Yay! I had like four options and this one sounded the best. 2y
TheBookHippie @Rachel.Rencher I‘ve read it with students over ten times now. I hope you like it. 2y

I always am hesitant when a book is a memoir and there‘s full conversations. Yes, the author probably didn‘t have a great childhood but I feel like there are worse childhoods. Sometimes I felt like it was all look at my ancestors and look how I have to live. I couldn‘t relate to the author. I was expecting more from this book and really disappointed.

Oh lort. Just got the message from Libby that this is due in 3 days and there are people waiting, which means I have to cram 5 hours of this into 3 days which, let me tell you, I am not looking forward to. This is f*n GRIM and is affecting my day-to-day mood (#privilege, I know). I hate reading books like this (it‘s a book club pick). The Grueling Saga of Torments has to be one of my least favorite genres.

(It‘s well-written and all that)

Suet624 Michael, how did I miss so many of your posts??? 3y
