A great NF read, especially after novel “Milkman,” and of personal interest as I did peace work there in the early 90s. Keefe explores Catholic politics in Northern Ireland from the late 60s to the present through four varied people: politician Gerry Adams, two differing IRA members, and a disappeared mother, keeping the complex info and analysis flowing and engaging. (Bonus: audio is read by a Belfast actor.)

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds very interesting and it‘s been on my list for awhile.... I think I‘ll have to move it up now and make a note to go with the audiobook too. 3y
Singout Do! The diversity of the characters and Keefe‘s gift for balancing their personal stories with the broader picture is pretty amazing. He admits himself it‘s only one part of the bigger picture, but an important one. I‘m glad he brings it right up to the present day. And that sexy Belfast accent... 😉 3y

This book was much more than I was expecting, not only a history of the 2nd Amendment & guns in America, but a history of the United States itself & the politics that have made guns a part of our culture (and not necessarily for the reasons you might think). Very informative and based on her history in this book, I‘ll definitely be checking out her An Indigenous Peoples‘ History of the United States (which has been on my list for awhile now).

Parkland | Dave Cullen

#UnpopularOpinion

I have tremendous respect for the students of Parkland, who choose to take a horrific school tragedy and turn it into a call for action against gun violence & a fight for gun safety legislation. It‘s truly remarkable. However, unless Dave Cullen pledged every dollar from the sales of this book towards the fight, I missed the point. The deeper I got into the book, I realized it was very shallow. 👇🏼

Cinfhen Dave Cullen admits this book was born after a series of articles he‘d prepared for Vanity Fair. While I found Columbine a tremendous effort of excellence & thorough thoughtful investigation, this book was poorly edited and felt slapped together. 4y
KathyWheeler I thought it came out too quickly to be of the same caliber as the Columbine book. 4y

TrishB Great review 👍🏻 4y
Cinfhen This book is strictly about the birth of the MFOL movement and doesn‘t attempt to understand what happened at Parkland that day. It never mentions the killer‘s name nor does it really get into any of the victims @KathyWheeler It‘s inspiring how the students became activists but it‘s not enough to make a book. (edited) 4y
Cinfhen Thanks @laurenslibrary @TrishB I hate being that #CrankyReader but it‘s important to remain honest in your reviews 😜 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I love an honest review! And congratulations for completing what could have been a tough book at this time. I‘ve been really slumping on the serious nonfiction reading lately. (edited) 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa And gorgeous photo too! 4y
Cinfhen Your prompts are getting more challenging for sure @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😉❣️ 4y

Cinfhen Thanks @Eggs I have a feeling I won‘t be seeing fresh cut flower deliveries for awhile ☹️ 4y
Kalalalatja That‘s too bad! Columbine is such a tough, but well written book, and I had hoped the same for this. But I have been holding off buying for a reason, and I just had a feeling it wouldn‘t be as well done 4y
Cinfhen I bought it on a #KindleDailyDeal so it wasn‘t a large investment @Kalalalatja but I could have read his vanity fair articles online for free!! See if you can find them 💖It‘s really a different book from Columbine in so many ways but it‘s really not on the same level. 4y
Kalalalatja Good tip, I‘ll try and find the articles! 4y
