Parkland
Parkland | Dave Cullen
The deeply moving account of the extraordinary teenage survivors of the Parkland shooting. Emma Gonzalez called BS. David Hogg called out Adult America. Cameron Kasky recruited a colorful band of teenagers. Four days after escaping Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, they announced the audacious March for Our Lives. A month later, it was the fourth largest protest in American history. Dave Cullen takes us on the students' odyssey. With unrivaled access to their friends and families, meetings, homes and tour bus through gun country, he reveals the quirky, playful organizers that have taken the United States by storm. We see the students cope with shattered friendships and PTSD, along with the normal struggles of exams and college acceptances. We see victims refusing victimhood. This spell-binding book is a testament to change and an examination of a pivotal moment in American culture, a generational struggle to save every kids of every color from the ravages of gun violence. Parkland is a story of staggering empowerment and hope, told through the wildly creative and wickedly funny voices of a group of remarkable campaigners.

Written by the journalist who wrote Columbine, I went into this expecting the same hard-hitting, deep dive he produced there. However, here Cullen focuses on the survivors of the Parkland tragedy & how the event spurred them to create a movement. While still emotional, & definitely inspirational, it didn‘t affect me quite the way his book on Columbine. I did learn new facts & am in awe of these teens (now mostly adults).

Aimeesue The Parkland survivors‘ group held a protest this weekend at the NRA headquarters near me. They had to shut down one of the streets, which was pretty excellent. 1y
Kristy_K @Aimeesue Oh wow. This didn‘t really go into if they were still active now, so it‘s cool to hear they‘re still working toward change. 1y

I clearly remember the afternoon of the shooting. Police sirens were screaming and it sounded like helicopters were on the rooftop of my apartment. Only a year ago we learned about another former student who killed himself, unable to deal with the trauma. Multiple kids… now adults… with suicide attempts… after experiencing this. No one needs automatic weapons besides our military. When the f*ck will laws acknowledge this? And I AM a gun owner.

TheBookHippie It distresses me as well… when will it be enough?! 1y
KathyWheeler My sister-in-law accused me of hating guns and wanting to ban all gun ownership because I feel like you do. She said that I probably don‘t even know how to shot one; well, I do, and I enjoy target shooting, but there is simply no honest reason why anyone who is not in the military needs to have some of these guns. This gun worship in the USA is so frustrating! 1y
MonicaLoves2Read I never understood why the made military grade guns available to civilians. I'm a gun owner, and to me they should outlaw them and make them only available for military. 1y

Traces birth of March for Our Lives in the aftermath of the MSD school mass shooting. David Cullen‘s the media go-to analyst for school shootings, but he recognized that fewer people are concerned with the motive of the shooter. Instead, people are searching for solutions. Sadly, I don‘t think sensible solutions will be implemented in such a divided America. Still a powerful listen.

Not as powerful as Columbine. Important work being done in the aftermath of a tragedy but the book itself didn‘t resonate as much with me.

I know I shouldn‘t be reading this in one sitting, because I know how books and media like this affect me. But I can‘t put it down, and I feel like I shouldn‘t - these incredible kids have been through so much worse. The least I can do is honor their harrowing and unimaginable experience by reading about it. #parkland #davecullen #nonfiction #neveragainmsd

I still remember years ago when we did a lockdown drill at the preschool where I work. My two year olds had just got done hiding and being very quiet. They thought it was such a fun game and told a visitor that we had at the school that day all about it. They were so excited to tell them about how they hide. It broke my heart. They have no idea the danger they are going to face by going to school. We have to do better. #neveragain

AmyG My daughter told me about the lockdown drills. Just heartbreaking that this is the world we live in. 4y
Lovesbooks87 @AmyG never did I think I would be doing this especially in a preschool sitting. But I guess with the way today‘s world is you just don‘t know if danger will ever come knocking at your door. 4y

It‘s amazing to me that just hours after the shooting occurred, MSD students began talking about rising up and fighting back. Not against their assailant, but against a culture that normalizes active shooter drills and worse, school shootings. Cullen covers their uprising, emotions, realities, and inspiring journey. Excellent on audio too!

Reading this it has really only just dawned on me that I was the same age as the kids from Columbine High School and my daughter is the same age as the Freshmen were at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. I admit to not knowing all the nuances of US gun law (I‘m English, so civilian guns are for hunting and clay (skeet) only) but I am shocked by what I am reading. It is heartbreaking.

Lovesbooks87 Gun laws in the US suck big time in my option. I have this book but I haven‘t read it yet. I was in middle school when Columbine happened and it impacted my school life so much. Always had an exit plan out of every class. The Columbine book was absolutely heartbreaking! 4y
MoonWitch94 I had to read this in spurts, it was just too heartbreaking & made me so angry. It‘s a good book & I enjoyed his Columbine book too. As @Lovesbooks87 says, US gun laws are an abomination. And I was also in middle school when Columbine hit, and it impacted me as well. School was no longer a safe place—always have an exit strategy & always keep your phone on you. 4y
veritysalter @Lovesbooks87 and @MoonWitch94 I have been discussing this book with my daughter (15), she has never, not once, felt unsafe at school or considered the possibility that something like this could happen. (I do appreciate that in some schools, mainly in cities, there is a fear of knife crime). What a horrendous thing for a child to have as a legitimate fear. That ‘active shooter protocol‘ is an accepted thing. It is so alien to anyone outside 1/2 4y
See All 12 Comments
Lovesbooks87 @veritysalter in the preschool that I teach at we have drills in case it would happen there. The kids get so happy to “hide.” It shouldn‘t be this way at all! 4y
veritysalter ... of the US (western world). Surely there is a way to protect the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms and keep children safe? I am baffled by this, it seems so simple. We had the tragedy at Dumblaine in 1996; gun laws were overhauled. Licence required, mental health by doctor certified, visit to home by police, all guns parted and kept in a locked cabinet, and no handguns or war weapons. 2/2 (edited) 4y
veritysalter @Lovesbooks87 Preschool??? They‘re babies, they shouldn‘t have to think this way. It‘s so sad. 4y
Lovesbooks87 @veritysalter yep! I hope and pray it never happens but in today‘s world you just don‘t know. I guess it is better for them to be prepared and know what to do then not know. I am glad they still don‘t know how awful the world can be! 4y
MoonWitch94 @Lovesbooks87 @veritysalter I worked in preschool with children on the autism spectrum. Those drills were so difficult for us to try & keep quiet and in one place. We knew that in that situation we‘d all be discovered first....and you know what that means 😿 It‘s a scary, horrible reality for US kids. And it angers me bc it doesn‘t need to be that way. You can “protect” the 2nd Amendment without this BS. No one needs assault guns. No one! 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @MoonWitch94 I agree with not needing the assault weapons, but I strongly believe in the second Amendment... I have one with me everywhere I go. We have had 5 shootings in a local town. Nothing compared to other places, but I go through this area going to work. 4y
MoonWitch94 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I totally get that, Misty. I‘m not necessarily against the 2nd Amend. but I hate how many people use it as a justification for having assault rifles. I think everyone has a right to do what makes them feel safe. And if carrying makes you feel protected, then you should be able to do that. 4y
veritysalter @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks & @MoonWitch94 - I too agree with the idea of responsible gun ownership (although I feel sad that you have to protect yourself in that way), from reading the book, I understood that they were asking for health checks, ban on assault rifles and the large magazines. A middle ground would seem a sensible solution. 4y
MoonWitch94 @veritysalter Yes, a middle ground is exactly what I think is needed. But there are a lot of voices who feel that a “middle ground” would be the gateway to abolishing gun ownership. And that‘s where the problem lies. 4y

#UnpopularOpinion

I have tremendous respect for the students of Parkland, who choose to take a horrific school tragedy and turn it into a call for action against gun violence & a fight for gun safety legislation. It‘s truly remarkable. However, unless Dave Cullen pledged every dollar from the sales of this book towards the fight, I missed the point. The deeper I got into the book, I realized it was very shallow. 👇🏼

Cinfhen Dave Cullen admits this book was born after a series of articles he‘d prepared for Vanity Fair. While I found Columbine a tremendous effort of excellence & thorough thoughtful investigation, this book was poorly edited and felt slapped together. 5y
KathyWheeler I thought it came out too quickly to be of the same caliber as the Columbine book. 5y

Cinfhen This book is strictly about the birth of the MFOL movement and doesn‘t attempt to understand what happened at Parkland that day. Bk1 in today‘s #BookHaul is Dave Cullens new book about the Parkland shootings in Florida in 2018. But like his previous work, Columbine, it‘s more about the survivors & their efforts to not just survive a horrific experience, but to push for change so that no other kids have to go through what they have. I loved Columbine so I‘m expecting to feel the same about this one.

Megabooks I think the relationship with guns is an interesting one. White American ancestors came with guns as conquerors and slave owners. It, until VERY recently, was legal for a white man to do virtually anything on his property to anyone and his gun was to protect and to enforce that right. To continue to enslave and conquer. (Do POCs and women own guns? Sure, but the majority of this type of mass shooting is by white men/boys.) 5y
Megabooks I would like to see gun ownership at least as regulated and difficult as car ownership. Permanent numbers on guns, tracked sales, databases of owners and red flags, basic competence tests to own/use. Yeah. Tough climb. Great review! I‘m glad you enjoyed the book!! 5y
Cinfhen Great review/ I plan on reading this book later this year. 5y

youneverarrived @4thhouseontheleft that seemed to be what the author was really getting at. 5y
youneverarrived @Megabooks that‘s crazy to me. Reading about these awful tragedies you just think ‘why can‘t people see something has to be changed‘. It seems obvious that strict regulations should be in place. 5y
youneverarrived @Cinfhen I hope you like it. I still need to read Columbine. 5y
Megabooks @youneverarrived I think there are these “false majorities” in America. The minority pro-gun lobby is so well organized, outspoken, and well funded, that the actual majority of citizens that want some form of gun control aren‘t heard. I think that‘s what so special about the Parkland kids. They actually said what the majority are thinking and wanting, loudly and proudly! 5y
Megabooks @youneverarrived there‘s also a “false majority” with being anti-abortion. Most people are for it. (edited) 5y
youneverarrived @Megabooks that makes a lot more sense, thanks for explaining. 5y

I read Columbine years back, and was expectant this this book would be just as well-written and researched; it was. However, the tone and approach Cullen takes in Parkland is distinctly different than Columbine, with years of second-hand trauma informing the shape this book takes. Parkland wasn't entirely what I expected, but it's definitely another accomplishment and well worth the read.

But nothing prepared me for the same kids the next morning. Their eyes were dry, their faces slack. Their expressions had gone vacant. That‘s why I‘m still on the story two years later: I never wanted to see that look again. But what we see today is worse: unsurprised survivors who expected a shooter.

This book was HARD; hard to read because it was emotional, hard to reflect upon because it made me angry at all the ways our government failed and continues to fail to keep us safe because it is beholden to a certain group ((NRA)), and hard because it so beautifully and truly depicted the aftermath of grief, trauma, and recovery. This should be mandatory reading. Another home run for This author, sadly.

This is not a bad book. Just be forewarned, it‘s nothing like Columbine. I didn‘t dislike this book, however at 1/3 of the way through, I realized I couldn‘t imagine reading an entire book on the topic of the birth of a movement. Specifically, a group of survivors of the school shooting immediately banded together to make certain that their classmates didn‘t die in vain. It‘s an honorable story, but not one I want to listen to for ten hours.

quote
laceyannea
Parkland | Dave Cullen

The more they learned, the more they found it was like listening to themselves—a better, wiser version of the selves they were fumbling toward. How liberating to discover Martin Luther King Jr. had already done all that work. Brilliantly. He had drawn from Gandhi, and it was amazing how well the principles stood up across time, space, and cultures.

quote
laceyannea
Parkland | Dave Cullen

When a gunman struck, the Parkland kids saw poetic justice in the long arc of history, recasting their school so eloquently in the image of its namesake. They had also lost a horrible battle at Parkland, with a human loss this time, but like Stoneman Douglas, they were resolved to mark Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as the final outpost in a generational war.

quote
laceyannea
Parkland | Dave Cullen

Parkland changed everything—for the survivors, for the nation, and definitely for me. I flew down the first weekend, but not to depict the carnage or the grief. What drew me was the group of extraordinary kids. I wanted to cover their response. There are strains of sadness woven into this story, but this is not an account of grief. These kids chose a story of hope.

Thankfully, this book is more about the start of the gun safety movement by the Parkland students rather than the actual school shooting. I love that their way of coping with their trauma was to go after something this country is sorely lacking and try to prevent these tragedies from happening again. One thing I really liked was that the perpetrator‘s name was never used - it was always referenced to as ‘the killer‘ or ‘the shooter‘.

It is inspiring to see the young people us oldies bitch about being apathetic step up and strive to change the world. I thought it was especially awesome that they really made it a priority to include other groups like the peace warriors from Chicago and to try to make their cause nonpartisan. Well done young uns!
More books for the #bookfitnesschallenge #BFC yea!

Caterina I'm so excited for this coming generation. ❤ Great job finishing another book! 6y

PARKLAND is an evocative and enlightening narrative of the events following the shooting of 17 students and staff in Florida. Cullen has masterfully captured the thoughts, feelings and mood of the students and their activities as they unfolded... https://www.bluestockingreviews.com/blog/parkland-birth-of-a-movement

FINALLY! My local library updated itself with some quality new books 📚 For the millions of local taxpayers dollars spent on this place, they kinda forgot to invest in BOOKS. 🙄 #bookhaul #locallibrary

I haven‘t read this yet - @Birdsong28 and I are doing a buddy read in June if anyone wants to join us.

However I believe that this tells about how the students #cometogether to grieve, to support each other and also to launch a remarkable campaign against gun violence.

Birdsong28 Yes the more the merrier for this book as it will be interesting to see lots of people's views 📚📖 6y

BINGO! Completed for “something about a movement” in #nonfiction2019. Subtitled “Birth of a Movement,” this pick was a no-brainer. It‘s about a group of inspirational young teens who said “enough is enough” after 17 people were gunned down at their school. They started the March for Our Lives movement, and are working to make legislative changes. I‘m amazed by their passion and determination, and am cheering them on.

@Riveted_Reader_Melissa

Clwojick Good option for “something with music“ 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa So glad you found it interesting.... I need to get to this one soon. 6y
Amiable @Clwojick That book you suggested is fiction ... this challenge is for nonfiction. For the “music” box I‘m planning on this one: 6y

Clwojick whoops. didn't see that it was nonfiction only. 😊 6y
Amiable @Clwojick Thanks for the recommendation, though! I‘ll put it in my TBR for when I‘m done with the nonfiction challenge and turn my attention back to fiction. 🙂 6y

Did you know this? I didn‘t! Will be taking my outrage to the polls. 😡

BlameJennyJane It‘s ridiculous! 🤬 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes I did! It‘s outrageous isn‘t it? They have always contented that if they where computerized it would make it easier for the government to go around and take everyone‘s guns. 🙄. It is easier to see who is wantonly stockpiling Sudafed than guns. 6y

Got to this part of reading about the Parkland school shooting and it hit me like a brick. I‘m sitting here with tears literally running down my face. Why have we failed our kids? Why are we letting the NRA set the agenda on whether our kids live or die? WHY?? 😢

Kaye I cannot read books about school shootings. It breaks my heart that this happens repeatedly and nothing is ever done in our country to change the laws so guns don‘t get in the wrong hands ( mentally unstable , anyone under age and irresponsible or making rash decisions on emotional issues. ) I know there are lots of responsible gun owners that follow all the rules . We need to close all the loopholes so the wrong folks can‘t get ahold of guns. (edited) 6y
WanderingBookaneer I read this book recently. Wait until you read about arming teachers, the words of a Columbine teacher who taught the shooter will remain with me. 6y

Amiable @Kaye I live in Connecticut, and when the school shooting happened at Sandy Hook we thought NOW things will have to change. But nothing did. So if the reality of 20 first-graders getting gunned down wasn‘t enough to make us understand that everything is horribly, horrifically wrong here, I don‘t think anything ever will. 😢 6y
Kaye I know, it‘s just so sad 😞. Every single time this happens, I keep hoping SOMEBODY IN POWER will start to make changes. I cannot even imagine how horrible the Sandy Hook event was. I recently saw a photo of the kids who were victims of that shooting. I don‘t quite know how the politicians can look in the eyes of those kids and not DAILY try to push new rules into effect. It‘s going to take someone in power to pass strict laws. 6y

Thank you @squirrelbrain for the book. No need to worry that you didn't get me a 30th birthday card with the other package as it was great as it was.

We could do the buddy read of this in June if you want? I am using this for a challenge myself.

squirrelbrain That would be great - remind me in June! 👍😁 6y

This was so much more inspiring than I was anticipating. Instead of focusing on the shooting itself Cullen details the activism that came after. I am totally in awe of the Parkland students and the movement they spawned and this book made me respect them even more. I do need to go back and listen to Columbine at some point but I know that book will be even more difficult.

Sleepswithbooks I was wondering how this was - it was written so fast and Columbine took 10 years to write. 6y

Would any of my fellow Littens like my spare copy of Parkland? Due to Amazon sending me the first copy in a too- large box it was battered to bits so I returned that one. I then somehow ended up with two replacement copies - this one has a very slightly bent front cover (which you can just see on the pic, top right)but is otherwise OK.

UK preferred - first to say yes can have it!

Birdsong28 Yes please 😘📚📖 6y
