The Sentence | Louise Erdrich
post image

There were sections of this story in which I found I was holding my breath for far too long, sections where I actually gasped at the beauty of a sentence or a paragraph. The main characters were ones I rooted for and felt deep affection for. A ghost in a bookstore, love that is tender and quiet, brief sections on the pandemic that cut deep, and the aftermath of the George Floyd murder that were visceral. Erdrich is a master. #TOB22

kspenmoll Love your review! Must read! 5h

Megabooks One of the best tob book reviews I‘ve read 💜 2h
thebluestocking You captured the vibe well! I loved this too. 💙 I really hope it gets a shot at the #tob. I don‘t think a play-in book has ever won. 1h
Ruthiella I just finished it today also! @thebluestocking I think you are right that a play in book has never yet won! 🤔 24m

#WeeklyForecast 04/22

I‘m in a bookclub! Finally! Each month a Dutch author chooses their favorite books and will discuss it with the participants of the bookclub on Zoom. Out of Mind is this month‘s choice, an old favorite of mine. I‘ll reread it and am also starting another one for the #Tob22. Maybe some Africa later in the week.

Megabooks Good luck with Friends! I wasn‘t a fan. I‘m so excited you‘re enjoying your book club! 💜 7h
LeahBergen Congrats on the new book club! 👏 6h
sarahbarnes Yay for book clubs! I‘ll be interested to hear what you think of Country Friends. I haven‘t read that one yet. 2h
thebluestocking Yay for a new book club! I hope it goes well. 39m

My #tob22 picks in order thus far:

1. The Trees
2. Klara and the Sun
3. The Sentence
4. All‘s Well
5. The Book of Form and Emptiness
6. The Echo Wife
7. Intimacies
8. Beautiful World, Where are you
9. In Concrete
10. When We Cease to Understand the World.

Where am I wrong? I can take it. 😂

Matrix and Nervous System are in progress. If I finish everything including the remaining play-ins, I‘ll give No One is Talking another go. 🙂

Ruthiella I like your countdown! I‘d put Intimacies higher and the Echo Wife lower and I‘ve not finished The Sentence yet, but so far I like it quite a bit! 👍 1d
Megabooks No a fan of Klara and loved Intimacies. So glad we all have different opinions!! 23h
BarbaraBB Love this! I hope you‘ll get to Subdivision. It‘s one of my favorites this year. 23h
Mindyrecycles @BarbaraBB I‘m on track so far to get them all in. 🤞🏼 6h

This is where I‘m at with my #tob reading. I‘m very pleased with the progress so far. Of the remaining books, I have the all but Nervous System in my possession or on the way. Maybe this will be the year I read all 18. 🤞🤷‍♀️

Favorites so far include When We Cease to Understand the World, No One is Talking about This, The Sentence, and The Trees. But I really have enjoyed most of these.

Cinfhen My top 4 at this point (because I still have a few left, which I may or may not read) are: No one is Talking, When We Cease, Trees & Intimacies. I did enjoy The Sentence, All‘s Well & the Echo Wife. I wasn‘t crazy about Libertie, Klara, Rooney, Country Friends, In Concrete & Copeland Cane. 1d
Cinfhen I forgot I read Matrix, it makes my Top 8 1d

Ruthiella I still need to read 4 before I‘m a 2022 Shortlist completist, but I‘m pretty sure I can do it. So far my top favorites are The Trees, All‘s Well and Intimacies. 1d
BkClubCare 👏👏👏 It is fun to be a completist! Tho, I find that even if I DNF a title, it gave me a enough of a taste that I can enjoy the matches. I just started When We Cease on audio while driving to my new favorite small town post office 😂 1d
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - good to know! I have both Intimacies and All‘s Well from the library and have 10 days to finish. I am possibly not going to finish BookSpinBingo (nor my bookclub book🙄) 1d
Ruthiella @BkClubCare I know! While in TOB fever I struggle to read those other books on my various lists! 😅 1d
squirrelbrain There are 4 I haven‘t read yet, 3 of which are just about to be published here in the UK. I p,an on reading the Sentence, and maybe Our Country Friends if it‘s on Kindle offer. Then I‘m calling it a day. Love your graphic! 1d
Megabooks Great job!! 1d
cariashley Wow, I‘m so impressed! I‘ve read 7 and am going to keep plugging away! 1d
thebluestocking @Cinfhen You and I have very similar rankings! I hope the #tob judges agree. 1h
thebluestocking @Ruthiella I‘m sure you can do it! We still have about six weeks. Plenty of time! 💙 1h
thebluestocking @BkClubCare I‘ve never been on the completist team, but I totally get what you mean about having enough of a flavor to really be invested in the match ups. 💙 I‘m in the same boat as you with book spin. It‘s probably not happening this month! 60m
thebluestocking @squirrelbrain Thanks! You‘re killing it! It‘s difficult to be in a country where some of the books aren‘t even available yet. 💙 (edited) 59m
thebluestocking @cariashley Some years, seven is all I get to. It‘s just fun to read books along with so many people! 💙 58m
thebluestocking @Megabooks Thank you! 💙 I think you win the prize for earliest finisher. 57m

I stole this from you @BarbaraBB to keep track of what I‘m missing for #ToB22
No way am I going to get to them all but I have several on hold at the library. Just borrowed When We Cease to Understand the World. Probably going to stay away from All‘s Well and The Book of Form and Emptiness.

Well-ReadNeck 🙌🏼👏🏼👊🏼 2d
BarbaraBB You‘re doing great. I was thinking of skipping the Ozeki too. And Copeland Cane. But now I‘ve heard good things about 2d
Chelsea.Poole @BarbaraBB yeah, same! It doesn‘t seem like something I‘d enjoy but I also know these types of lists help me branch out and discover something I normally wouldn‘t try. I‘ll look for your review, if you read it 😊 1d
cariashley @Chelsea.Poole @BarbaraBB am almost done with the Ozeki and really really liking it, not to make things more complicated for either of you - it‘s a long one! 18h
Chelsea.Poole @cariashley thanks! This may be the push I need to go ahead and give it a go! (In a few weeks!) 10h

I‘m disappointed. I didn‘t make a connection with the main character, plus there‘s not much of a plot so I was left to meander through. And I fear it‘s forgettable. The positive: it did feel like a glimpse into a real life.

Susanita Beautiful cover 2d
BarbaraBB Great review. I see what you mean though I appreciated it more than you did. 2d
Megabooks Definitely character driven, so if you don‘t connect with her I can see how it would disappoint. 2d
Ruthiella @Megabooks is right. The reader is in the narrator‘s head all the time, and if that/she doesn‘t click with you, it‘s no fun. 2d

In a few weeks the #ToB22 starts. Should we do our own tournament again and predict and choose our own winner, like we did last year? I liked it a lot but am not sure if anyone is interested to play again? If so, I‘ll gladly dig up my GoogleForms and update them.
I am tagging people who I know are reading this year‘s shortlist but of course anyone is very welcome to join. Spread the word and please let me know when you want to join!

Suet624 I think last year I hadn't read enough of the books to feel I could vote. This year I'm doing pretty well, so I think I'd be up for it. Thanks for offering. 3d
squirrelbrain I‘d love to play along Barbara, thank you, as it‘s my first year this year! 3d
Addison_Reads I'd love to join in the discussions and play along. I'm trying to make my way through the list this year. 3d

Ruthiella For sure, if you are okay with the extra effort Barbara. ☺️ 3d
thebluestocking I‘d love to! Let me know if I can help with anything! 💙 3d
cariashley I would be up for it for sure! It would definitely motivate me to read more of the selections. I appreciate the work that goes into it though, and totally understand if it‘s too big an undertaking. 3d
Well-ReadNeck I‘d be down. 2d
Flaneurette sure, sign me up 2d
Hooked_on_books Yeah, I thought it was fun last year! I think I should have most of them read by the time the tournament rolls around. 2d
BarbaraBB @Suet624 @squirrelbrain @Addison_Reads @Ruthiella @thebluestocking @cariashley @Well-ReadNeck @Flaneurette @Hooked_on_books Yay! So good to have you and do this again. I‘ll create the form and will share it here! 2d
BarbaraBB @thebluestocking Thank you Jessica for the offer but it‘s not much work. I have last year‘s forms so I just change them. Happy your joining! 2d
BarbaraBB @Addison_Reads Glad you‘re joining, I am sorry that I forgot to tag you in the first place! 2d
BkClubCare Of course! How can I help? 2d
BarbaraBB @BkClubCare Yay! Glad you‘re in again too! No need to help, it will be much easier the second time around. Thanks for the offer though! 2d
BarbaraBB @ImperfectCJ You may like this too! 2d
Sophronisba I'm in! What do I do? 2d
ImperfectCJ @BarbaraBB Thanks for the tag! Yes, this sounds like fun! I'm not sure how many I can read in time, but I love a challenge! :-) 2d
Chelsea.Poole I‘m in…but I need to light a fire under my butt to get reading the rest of the shortlist! 🔥 🍑 2d
kwmg40 I really enjoyed the event last year. Thanks for offering to run this again! 2d
BarbaraBB @Sophronisba @ImperfectCJ This will be fun. You just read as many of the books as you can and vote in time for your favorites during the various rounds of the tournament. Therefore you need to fill out the form that I‘ll post here later on. I will tag you. It‘s easy! Thanks for joining! 2d
BarbaraBB @Chelsea.Poole @kwmg40 So good to have you again 💕 2d
Megabooks Yes! Yes! Yes!!! 2d
Mindyrecycles I‘m in. Thanks so much! 2d
BarbaraBB @Megabooks @Mindyrecycles Yay! Happy you‘re in 🤍 2d
sarahbarnes Yes, count me in and thanks for organizing it! 2d
Cinfhen YES, Please!!! 13h
Readerann Ah, this is so much fun! I‘m in, even though I‘ve only read a few of them so far. Thanks, @BarbaraBB 🤗 39m

“While in prison, I received a dictionary.“

And so I begin the latest by Erdrich. I'm delighted this is on the list of #TOB22 books to read.

thebluestocking Such a good first line. I really loved that prologue in particular. 💙 3d
Suet624 @thebluestocking That prologue was really something! So good. (edited) 17h

I wasn‘t sure if I was ready to read a book about the pandemic. But I was in good hands with Erdrich. This book pulses with life, with the love of books and words and people and traditions, and with the violence that permeates American history. It‘s told from the point of view of Tookie, an Ojibwe woman who spent a decade in jail. It weaves in and out of fiction and reality with a light touch. And, at the end, I felt a little less haunted.

LiteraryinLawrence Lovely review! 3d
Tamra I really appreciated the bits of levity she included. 3d

BarbaraBB The pandemic played just a side role and I liked that a lot. 3d
Ruthiella Great review. I‘m reading it now, about 25% done. 3d

I'm so glad I finished reading this. Ozeki manages to leave me with a background hum of all the components of this novel. How grief and loss manifests, hearing voices, mental illness, the life and role of a book, and those rare beings who reach out to you when you very much need it. Of course I needed to investigate and, yes, there is an organization that supports those who hear voices. My skylight seemed the perfect photo for form and emptiness.

Cinfhen Gorgeous photo and review ❣️❣️❣️it makes me ACTUALLY WANT to read this book🥰 4d
Suet624 @Cinfhen It was nip and tuck on whether I was going to make it through. :) I particularly enjoyed Ozeki's narrative on books and what they offer us. 4d

Ruthiella I‘m glad you liked it! And, yes the photo is perfect. 😊 4d
BarbaraBB Perfect picture. And now I want to read this book too while I already had decided I‘d skip it for the #tob. 4d
Suet624 @BarbaraBB From the reviews it would seem that When We Cease will probably advance, leaving Ozeki behind. Ozeki's editor could have condensed bits of this one so it was shorter but, as if often the case, the ending wrapped things up nicely and left me feeling it was well worth the time spent reading it. 4d
Suet624 @Ruthiella Thank you! 4d
thebluestocking Lovely review. I am looking forward to reading this and taking my time with it. 3d
Suet624 @thebluestocking I hope you enjoy the read. 💕 3d
Megabooks Fantastic, thoughtful review! 3d
