Double Date | Rosamond Du Jardin

Oh, how I love these books. I have all of du Jardin's books. They're loaded with 1950s nostalgia from the point of view of young women. The Pam & Penny series is my favorite, and I usually revisit these every couple of years. 🧡💜💛

dabbe @JenlovesJT47 Oh, are they a fave! Chintz curtains, mother baking cookies when you arrive home after school and AFTER already having a shake at the malt shop ... #thosewerethedays #infiction 🧡💜💛 3d
JenlovesJT47 Sounds fabulous, like Sweet Valley in the 50s. 🩷🩷🩷 3d

This is probably my fourth time reading this novel and it tore my heart to pieces as relentlessly as it did the first time. A beautiful story, every time I read it I am reminded that real growth as a human being always involves looking yourself in the eye, confronting your shortcomings and asking for forgiveness, and how incredibly difficult that is.

897 pages later, and I am a better person for it. Masterful, brilliant, heart wrenching, full of anger and sadness and wit and humor. I absolutely loved it. And yep, I know this much is true 😉
(Side note: Wally Lamb lists Mrs. Piggle Wiggle as the first book he read that inspired his writing life. I LOVED Mrs. PW 😊♥️).

Ruthiella I too adored Mrs. Piggle Wiggle as a child. I re-read them a few years ago and still found them delightful. ❤️ 3mo
AmyG I love Mrs Piggle Wiggle! My Mom used to read those to me. 3mo
CBee @Ruthiella @AmyG ♥️♥️♥️ I might need to find them and read them again! 3mo

Amiable This is one of my all-time favorite books—I re-read it every few years or so. 😍 Wally Lamb is a wonderful writer and person —I‘ve actually met him a few times! He used to teach at UConn and I would run into him at the gas station in Willimantic when I worked at another state university nearby. 😄 2mo
CBee @Amiable oh, how awesome is that? He seems like he would be super nice. This book sat on my shelf for years. I think I was intimidated by the size! But, it was so worth it ♥️ 2mo

3⭐
•This author‘s books are either a hit for me or a near miss…this one falls into the latter. Despite wanting to, I never connected with the characters or the story. I‘m willing to admit it might be a me thing.
•Christine Lakin‘s narration was decent.

3.5/5 🌟

This started strongly with a compelling look at mental illness and the bond between twin brothers. However, the relentless misfortunes made the narrative feel forced and overly dramatic. An okay read overall.

dabbe @julieclair I adore these books by Rosamond du Jardin. They're overloaded on 1950s nostalgia, but I still love them anyway. This book is from the Pam & Penny twins series, of which there are four: DOUBLE DATE, DOUBLE FEATURE, SHOWBOAT SUMMER, and DOUBLE WEDDING. 🤩 6mo
