Much of the reporting in this book has been done before. It is not a revelation that early childhood intervention, drug diversion programs, job/financial literacy training, and after school programs help kids, families, and adults.

However, until we make fundamental, bipartisan structural change to make these and other programs available to all Americans, we need to keep this in the public eye.

A well written, if a bit imperfect book. 4⭐️ #BOTM

Honestly, I‘m a bit frustrated because the first 60 pages are turning out to be another book about the plight of rural white dudes. And they ASSUME (😒) it‘s the same for blacks, Latinx, and natives(!!) then they talked about how great the Homestead Act was for getting housing. Yes, for WHITES. Wasn‘t so great for natives!! 🤯

I‘m not sure how I feel if this is more whiny white people.

Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage @8little_paws @lele1432 They‘ve opened it up some, but still, they focus more on working class whites. They had one part on a Central America-descendant veteran in Baltimore and a black woman incarcerated in Alabama, but it‘s pretty white. @Cinfhen (edited) 5y

Megabooks @lele1432 they‘re following a lot of people from Nick‘s hometown in rural Oregon, which I get, but it‘s pretty well trod ground at this point. White, rural opiate/meth/poverty epidemic has 15 years of books like this. That said, this is better written than some of the older ones. 5y

Megabooks @Cinfhen Agreed! If this had been written 10 years ago, it would‘ve been a revelation!! Now it‘s kind of like, uh-huh. Maybe they‘ll have solutions later on. I‘m halfway through. I took a 7 hour nap in the evening. I‘m on Israeli time if anyone asks! 😂😂 5y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Reading it in February isn‘t set in stone for me. (What reading really ever is?) I‘m feeling overwhelmed by the stuff on my shelf and also some group reads. Plus we will be on vacay for part of the month, which isn‘t always better for my reading. So ... if we move into March, that‘ll probably be fine for me! 5y

Megabooks @Cinfhen I kind of get how you feel as far as keeping it, although I also understand why you may have to give it up. I love the way the BOTM books are bound. They lay open so nicely on my Flippy. I would have a hard time giving it up even though I have about 10 in backlog. I‘m slightly addicted. 😂 plus I generally enjoy their picks. I think I‘ve read 15 or so since I rejoined this summer and only panned two. That‘s about as good as I do on my own (edited) 5y
