The Old Curiosity Shop | Charles Dickens

Dickens always names his characters appropriately. We meet Mr. Swiveller, compatriot of the grandfather‘s grandson Kip, both of whom seem to be up to no good.

I‘m looking forward to Chapter 3, where we will meet a fellow named Daniel Quilp. That‘s an ambiguous last name, so it will be interesting to see what sort of character he is.

Oh I do love Dickens.

Ruthiella This is not one of my favorite Dickens, but Dick Swiveler is one of my characters. 👍 3h
Texreader @Ruthiella Oh good to know! When he creates despicable characters I always cringe when there‘s a chapter with them in it. 2h

A previous owner of my Oxford edition disagrees with this Cast of Characters (love this) that the old man (the narrator) is the single gentleman, brother to Nell‘s grandfather. I‘ve only read 1-1/2 chapters but at least so far I have to agree with this unknown persons‘s “No.” I can‘t wait to see if this bears out.

Image from my Oxford edition. This illustration is entitled “The Old Curiosity Shop.” It does appear to accurately depict the shop as Dickens describes it. In Chapter 1, the old man meets a pretty little girl at night and walks her “home,” to this unique place. Here the old man meets her grandfather and suspects he‘s up to no good.

#WhatTheDickens

I‘m on chapter 3. This is longer than I thought it to be. Who‘s joining in on this one? I really enjoyed Chuzzlewit!! Anyone else? Thoughts?

BarbaraJean I‘m joining in for this one! It‘s only about 450 pages in my edition… but the print is tiny, so the page count is deceptive! I‘m hoping to read 2-3 chapters a day so I can finish by the end of the month.🤞🏼 3d
Cuilin @BarbaraJean yeah the print in mine is also tiny. I think a few chapters a day is a good idea 👍 🤞 3d

AnneCecilie I‘m joining in on this one. It didn‘t cross my mind yesterday that it was the first, but I have started it today . I‘m also thinking 2-3 chapters a day (edited) 3d
AllDebooks I didn't get around to Chuzzlewhit, but I do intend to. I'm in for this one, too. 3d
Daisey I‘m not sure. I‘ll see if I can get audio from my library today, getting annoyed that I still do not have the collected edition I preordered months ago. I also have some nonfiction I want to listen to this month, so we‘ll see which holds my attention. 3d
Sparklemn I don‘t think I‘m joining this time. Have fun! (edited) 3d
Cuilin @Daisey I‘ll complete Dickens‘ entire canon by the time Audible releases the audio collection. It‘s so frustrating. What‘s the issue? 3d
Cuilin @Sparklemn 👍💛 3d
Lcsmcat I‘ve read this one recently so I don‘t plan to re-read, but I‘ll be following the discussion. 2d
Cuilin @Lcsmcat what did you think of this novel? 2d
Lcsmcat It is Dickens at his best and worst - his prejudices and his sentimentality are on display. But his prose is as always stellar. 2d
Cuilin @Lcsmcat 👍 sounds about right. I love Dickens,, but I do find my eyes rolling sometimes. 🙄 Thanks for answering. 2d
quietjenn Oh, I forgot and am out of town. I'll see what my copy looks like when I get home. I also need to finish MC ... I liked, but got distracted! 2d

I pulled this off my shelf tonight to plan my #whattheDickens reading & discovered a bookmark from Hay on Wye—where I purchased this copy.😍 It was helpfully tucked in between Curiosity Shop and Child‘s History, so I only had to flip back a few pages to determine how many chapters are in Curiosity Shop. However, the last chapter is helpfully titled “Chapter the Last,” meaning I had to flip back a few more pages to find an actual numbered chapter🤪

LeahBergen What a pretty edition! 3d

Texreader Ok lots to say about this post! Gorgeous book! And you went to the town of bookstores??? I so want to go there someday! I love you found that bookmark in it. And finally I simply adore how Dickens names his chapters! 3d
BarbaraJean @LeahBergen So pretty! But the print is t i n y. 🧐 @Texreader Yes! The town of books is glorious!! Highly recommended! I‘ve been so privileged as to go there multiple times 😍 I have good friends in Wales, not too far of a drive from there. 3d
Cuilin Love this 😍 3d

Pickpick

I kept to a chapter a day until last weekend and then I just had to finish it. But if I‘m counting correctly we should be finishing about now. I fell in love with Tom Pinch and his sister, and laughed with Mark, and despised Pecksniff. The ending was satisfying, except for poor Tom. Be sure to read the end note Dickens insisted be included in every edition - knowing how much of his $ was made in the US made me 🙄 #whatthedickens

Cuilin I finished too, insomnia helped. Lol. I was satisfied with the ending. As to the end note “Dickens you said what you said in the book no takesie backsies!” Lol (edited) 2w
Lcsmcat @Cuilin 😂 “nobacksies” 😂 2w
Ruthiella I loved Tom Pinch. ❤️ I have an ending in my mind that he marries the now more sober Mercy Pecksniff Chuzzlewit and they are now happy together. 2w

Cuilin @Ruthiella I love that ending. 2w
Lcsmcat @Ruthiella I had that same ending in mind as a possibility too and couldn‘t decide if it would be a happy ending for Tom or not. 2w
vivastory I've been itching to read more Dickens lately 4d

Here‘s my Dickens shelf. L to R: Little Dorrit, Barnaby Rudge, Hard Times, Dombey & Son, Bleak House, Pickwick Papers, David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and A Tale of two Cities. My Martin Chuzzlewitt doesn‘t match either of these sets, and his Christmas books are on another shelf. Plus I have most of his novels on my Kobo. But I love these old boxed editions. @Texreader #whatthedickens
