@BookmarkTavern

Since producing two AP Literature surveys for #ThreeListThursday, I am reminded of how many classics I still want to read. Two big authors would be to read all of Shakespeare's plays and all of Dickens. I'm really enjoying the #WhatTheDickens buddy read.
Here's a link to ALL AP books on the AP Lit exam from 1970-2024 if interested:

DrSabrinaMoldenReads Thanks for this list! 23h
julieclair My goodness yes! Soooo many still to read. Thanks for the link. I, too, want to read/reread Shakespeare‘s plays, and was thinking it might be a nice challenge for 2026. (2025 is full, lol.) 22h

dabbe @julieclair Now THAT would be fun. Maybe a buddy read for the Shakespearean plays in 2026? Maybe we could do it together? 🤔🤩🤗 22h
Mollyanna Thank you for sharing the list! 21h
BooksandCoffee4Me Cormac McCarthy‘s The Road and Edith Wharton‘s The House of Mirth so that I can understand my son‘s writings on those books. 21h
BookmarkTavern Shakespeare‘s plays are a lot of fun! Thanks for posting! 21h

dabbe @BooksandCoffee4Me I'm intimidated by McCarthy but Love Edith Wharton ... though I've never read MIRTH. Another one on the TBR! 🤩😂🤗 21h
dabbe @BookmarkTavern I've read a few but not all! YW! 🩶🩷🩶 21h
BooksandCoffee4Me @dabbe I‘m intimidated also but my son studied his writing as an English major at Wheaton College, and he keeps encouraging me to read McCarthy. Usually I just read my son‘s reviews, like this one, which is also intimidating 😁 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/6249665317 21h
dabbe @BooksandCoffee4Me Wowza! Your son is brilliant. This retired high school English teacher is beyond impressed! 🤩 7h
BooksandCoffee4Me @dabbe He‘s offspring of two lit majors and teachers, and his education at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL was exceptional. And yes, I read both his book reviews and his movie reviews and am blown away by how his mind works. 😊 (edited) 7h
dabbe @BooksandCoffee4Me Beyond awesome. 🩶🩷🩶 6h

No one I‘ve ever read (or listened to) writes characters as well as Dickens! #whattheDickens @Cuilin

Cuilin “And the popular prejudice runs in favor of two” that is perfection!!! 2d
Texreader @Cuilin Isn‘t that the best? 1d

#BookReport

I continued my yearlong reads on the right

I finished Hard Time #WhatTheDickens and Lark Rise to Candleford #Hashtagbrigade.

I continued The Valley of Fear #NoPlaceLikeHolmes and started Rest is Resistance #SheSaid

I continued listening to the tagged

I read An Academic Question

The author event this week was cancelled, so I started Beautyland instead, but so far I‘m not sure what I feel about it

I‘ll be starting this audiobook tomorrow for #whattheDickens @Cuilin

Cuilin I‘ve the same one ready to go!! I‘ve an Oxford hard copy too. This one isn‘t as long as Copperfield. 3d
Texreader @Cuilin Thank heavens but it‘s still 34 hours! 😉 2d
CatLass007 I have this audiobook too. In another post @Cuilin said there are 65 chapters, which I guess is referring to the print version. The audiobook has 28 chapters. I usually put my sleep timer on “end of chapter.” I‘m going to have to pay more attention to the chapter breaks! 2d
Cuilin @CatLass007 I was joking with somebody else about listening to audiobooks at night and then having to redo some chapters the next day 😴 2d
CatLass007 That‘s no joke. That‘s why I always set the sleep timer. 2d

#WhatTheDickens @cuilin @Texreader

Nicholas Nickleby has 65 chapters. Read at your own pace and discussion will be at the end of March.

Bookwormjillk I tried the last one on audio and the voice was so soothing I kept falling asleep. I‘m getting this one on kindle! 3d
Daisey I‘m going to try to continue, but I‘m not sure I‘ll be able to fit this one in during these next couple of months. Please keep me on the list! 3d

Cuilin @Bookwormjillk Maybe some of it‘s going in subliminally and you will start having the speech pattern of an 18 century Victorian lady!!! 3d
Cuilin @Daisey 👍 3d
CatLass007 I didn‘t know about this group. There are a ton of free Charles Dickens books on Audible and I think I‘ve added them all to my library. I would love to actually listen to one of them. Please add me to your tag list. 3d
Cuilin @CatLass007 absolutely 👍 I do a combo 📖 &🎧 3d
CatLass007 That‘s a good idea. I found that some selections for #FellowshipOfTolkien work best that way. But between migraines and multi-tasking I generally just listen. 3d
dabbe Hoping I can keep up! 😅 3d

David Copperfield | Charles Dickens

Pickpick

I read this way back in grad school, in a class with my favorite professor, and I loved it. On this re-read over 20 years later, I still remembered so much of the plot and even more so Dickens‘ always-memorable characters. I remembered how much I loved David, his sweet mother, Peggoty and Agnes and Traddles, and of course, Aunt Betsey. And I loved to hate creepy Uriah Heep & insufferable Steerforth. Right before reading this for #WhattheDickens ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) I read Demon Copperhead & was fascinated by how well Kingsolver translated the story to a new setting. She mirrored so many events of the original but masterfully wove them together using very different issues to explore similar societal failings as the original story. My main issue with Copperhead was its characters—they didn‘t LIVE like Dickens‘ characters and I didn‘t fall in love with them. I found them frustrating & stereotypical.⤵️ 6d
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) On this re-read of David Copperfield, I didn‘t love the characters like before. They‘re still so vivid & they still come to life for me, but I was so frustrated by David‘s blind innocence & gullibility! For all that happens to him, he should be WAY more worldly wise—too often he‘s a terrible judge of character & so easily manipulated. And I just wanted Agnes to stand up for herself rather than just patiently enduring in the background. ⤵️ 6d
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) Some things never change, though: I still had no patience for Dora, Uriah was as creepy as ever, and Peggoty and Aunt Betsey were still hilariously endearing. In spite of my character frustrations on this re-read, Dickens still wins on character. I didn‘t enjoy this as thoroughly as my first read (I think the Victorian mindset grates on me now in ways I excused back then), but still: what a masterpiece. ⤵️ 6d

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) It made me want to pull that Chesterton biography of Dickens off my bookshelf, something I may well do this year. And I‘m looking forward to filling in more gaps in my Dickens reading with #WhattheDickens this year as well! 6d
kspenmoll Fantastic review/synopsis, comparison of the two books. 💕 6d
BarbaraJean @kspenmoll Thank you! 😊 6d
Cuilin This review is perfect. 👌 amazing comparison. I loved both books and had some of the same frustrations as you. I also loved hating Uriah!! 6d
Texreader I love this review!!! Spot on!! Thank you for taking the time to write it in so much detail! ♥️ 6d
Lcsmcat I can crack my sister up any time by just saying “Janet! Donkeys!” 6d
BarbaraJean @Cuilin @Texreader Aw, thank you so much! I loved re-reading this. Thank you for hosting the buddy read! 6d
BarbaraJean @Lcsmcat 😂😂 Honestly, those scenes with Aunt Betsey and Janet and and the donkeys are the ones most firmly planted in my memory from my first read!! 6d
Texreader @Lcsmcat Best part of the book!! And movie 6d
