Annie's life was ordinary—she worked as a real estate agent, had a loving boyfriend, and a tense relationship with her mother. But everything shifted when she was kidnapped by a psychopath. Though she managed to escape, her mind remains haunted by the cabin, a place more suffocating than a prison. The story is told in second-person perspective, with each chapter unfolding as her therapy sessions, where you, the reader, become her psychiatrist.

This book is disturbing on every level. I knew the name but wasn't familiar with the story. On one hand, I appreciate the fact that she hasn't sanitized what happened to her. People need to know that there are monsters all around us, and I think awareness is the only way to spread that message. However, I wouldn't say I'm enjoying reading it. Considering she was captive from age 11-almost 30, it is remarkable she has written a book.⬇️

I stayed in bed way later than I meant to this morning, completely absorbed in Jaycee's story. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering she endured. It's hard to believe there are people in the world who can do such horrendous acts, and she doesn't shy away from sharing exactly what her abuser did to her. It's honest, hopeful, and very well-written especially given the memory blackouts she experienced. Trigger warning for explicit descriptions.

#bannedbooksunday book #2 is "A Stolen Life" by Jaycee Dugard. This book was banned due to references to drugs, smoking and alcohol, offensive language, sexually explicit content and being deemed "unsuitable" for the age group, as well as "adopting, supporting or promoting gender fluidity".

Ever since reading All Things Cease to Appear I've wanted to read more Brundage. This one is completely different yet just as good.
Set in Hollywood a man who's script has been denied by a famous producer, is looking for ways to make her change her mind. That's just the start, which leads to a whirlwind of actions, just like in a movie. A hard boiled thriller on the one hand but also a very thoughtful novel about war veterans. Highly recommended!

I remember @Cathythoughts writing about the tagged book so when I found a copy in a free library I had to pick it up of course. I am going to read it after finishing Yr Dead from the #ToB25 longlist.
I want to read so many of the longlisted books and have a couple of them on my shelves. I‘ll read one each week. Except for this week lol because I also want to read Colored Television!
