Back in Egypt with the Emersons in 1916 or so who are up to their usual tricks of solving crime and making trouble. I‘m not a huge fan of the Ramses/Nefret storyline - too much “romance” for me, but I can tolerate it because the rest is just fun.

bookandbedandtea It's been a while since I dipped into this series but I'm tempted now because I LOVE the Emersons, especially Amelia herself and Ramses. I never really warmed up to Nefret but I didn't find it affected my enjoyment of the books. 💗 2mo

Ruthiella @bookandbedandtea I do love this series. It‘s about as close to romance as I am comfortable with. One of the things I love most about Amelia and Emerson is the steadfastness of their relationship…no will they or won‘t they - they just are. 2mo

bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella Yes! I love that they encounter (and create) all kinds of drama but their relationship is never in question! Communication issues drive me nuts. 2mo

DGRachel @bookandbedandtea I made the mistake of binging the whole series in an audio reread and I was ready to throw my phone across the room during the teen/20s Ramses nonsense. 😂 2mo

The plot was a bit convoluted and took a bit to "dig in" but honestly, by now, I am in just for Amelia Peabody, Emerson, Nefret, Ramses, David, Abdul and the rest.
The audiobooks are totally fun.

Ruthiella They are so fun for the personality and growth of the characters. For me, the actual mystery plots are secondary. Or maybe even tertiary, since I also like the historical settings usually as well. (edited) 2mo

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 This was another one of Amelia Peabody‘s fun archaeological adventures in Egypt which, of course, turned into a murder mystery. Amelia also is again hot on the trail of the Master Criminal. The last couple of chapters didn‘t verge on the edge of the ridiculous, the author took a cheerful leap in with both feet. I teetered back and forth between laughter and embarrassment at the silliness of it all.

Like Emerson, I was a bit tired of hearing about the MASTER CRIMINAL but honestly these books are just such good fun that even the MC drama stayed pretty entertaining, even if the ending feels rather ridiculous. Ramses is still spoiled, but incrementally less obnoxious in this one. Overall I'm enjoying my reread of this series, but looking forward to the later books where Ramses is older and more a part of the team.

Ruthiella Agree that there are some bits that wear less well earlier in the series. But I think the underlying solidity of the Emersons as a family unit carries the reader through that (she writes 11 books in 😂!). 7mo

TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - Definitely so - one of the things I love most is the close familiar bond between them all. I read the whole series about ten years ago, so it's been fun to revisit them all, knowing that they get better as they go 😂 7mo

I haven't read any of the Amelia Peabody books for a couple of years and I'd forgotten how funny Amelia's narrative “voice“ is.
