Pickpick

Reviewing this actually catches me up on reviews!!

This was a #Roll100 pick from April that I finally got around to. This was an engaging fairy tale that I enjoyed overall, but somehow didn't love the way I wanted to. Gaiman's writing is quite good and I actually did like the ending, but I found it difficult to connect to the characters. Still, a solid pick

I actually received this back in December 2020 for the #ElfSwap from @LibrarianRyan !!

Clwojick Woohoo! ❤️ 5d

Librarybelle Awesome - another great use of prompts! 5d
TheAromaofBooks @Chelsea.Poole - Thank you!! I love coneflowers so I just let them reseed themselves around the garden freely 😂 5d
Chelsea.Poole @TheAromaofBooks same here! I planted some last year and seeing a bit of expansion in them this year, which I love! 4d
LibrarianRyan I get that. I am not the biggest fan of Gaiman. I always want to love his books, but just like them. But I love this movie? 1d
TheAromaofBooks @LibrarianRyan - This is only the second Gaiman book I've read. The first was a picture book/short story, The Sleeper & the Spindle, which I didn't care for at all. He may just not be for me haha I may have to find the movie for Stardust, though, because I really did like the overall story/concept. 1d
LibrarianRyan @TheAromaofBooks The movie was fantastic. I read the book after I had seen the movie. I also read the Graveyard book and still don't get the fanfare, and i agre about the Sleeper and the Spindle. I tried the Ocean at the end of the lane in audiobook, nope. Boring. But the Movie that goes with stardust is so fun. 1d
TheAromaofBooks @LibrarianRyan - I definitely have some authors where I love their ideas/concepts more than their actual books, and Gaiman may be one of those. I had forgotten that I also read the Graveyard Book until you mentioned it as it was quite long ago, but I was rather ambivalent towards it at the time as well. 13h

Tongues of Sepents the 6th book in the Temeraire series tells of Laurence &Temeraire's exile in Australia.
Crucible of Gold the 7th book in the series tells of their adventures through the Incan Empire.
I throughly enjoyed both 🐉

Wow, I had some mixed feelings about this one!! A GR review I saw said something like "I respected this novel more than I enjoyed it" and I think that really captures my sentiments as well. The story Anne has written here is powerful and engaging, and thinking about how daring it was to publish a story about a woman standing up for herself and bailing on her husband (/owner) in 1848 makes it all the more powerful. I also appreciated Helen's ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) strong moral code and commitment to her religious beliefs. She was an amazingly strong character whose unwillingness to compromise her conscience meant that her life was harder in the short run, but I never felt like she “deserved“ what was happening to her, despite opportunities to change her path. I really admired Helen, even if she did get a bit preachy from time to time. I did feel like the ending dragged on a bit too long ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) (mild spoiler below) and I did feel like there wasn't a single genuinely GOOD man in this entire story - Gilbert made me roll my eyes constantly at how sensitive, spoiled, and whiny he was about EVERYTHING. Helen's brother was SO smug and self-satisfied all the time that I just wanted to sock him in the nose (I honestly didn't blame Gil for that one!).

All in all, this was a really worthwhile read. This is only my second venture into ⬇
2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Bronte territory, but this definitely gets my vote over Wuthering Heights! However, it's not a book I see myself rereading.

Thanks for the pick #PemberLittens - I am really enjoying reading these classics, and having the whole gang along helps keep me on track and engaged in books I otherwise might not finish!! @sprainedbrain @BarkingMadRun

TheAromaofBooks Honestly not over the part where Gilbert thinks Helen is going to marry someone else and is all like, “How could she leave me??“ Bruh, you haven't contacted her in over a year????? Is she literally just supposed to pine for you forever??? If you want her, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT you whiny little whiner! Oh my GOSH! 😂 2w
REPollock I felt the same way about it. ✊to Anne for the mettle to write it but I felt awful for women trapped in those societal circumstances. 1w
BarkingMadRun That quote is perfection 1w
sprainedbrain Excellent review!! 1w
ravenlee This was my favorite of all the Brontës I‘ve read, but as I hate Wuthering Heights and just don‘t get the appeal of Jane Eyre it‘s definitely a qualified win! ? 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks LOVE this photo!! ❤️ 1w
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 1w
TheAromaofBooks @REPollock - Exactly! Like I really appreciated her boldness in calling out the problems she saw, but it doesn't make for very “fun“ reading material!! 1w
TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRun - As soon as I saw that line, I knew that was EXACTLY how I felt about this book, and I think it's why I kept reading it, despite note really enjoying it. I felt like Anne was sharing a powerful message, almost liked I owed it to her to hear what she had to say. 1w
TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee - Right? With Wuthering Heights as its only competition for me so far in Bronte-reading, being the first-place winner isn't exactly a rousing endorsement! 😂 1w
TheAromaofBooks @AlwaysBeenaLoverofBooks - Thank you!!! Those dried flowers came out of a bouquet I received years ago and they still somehow look nice!!! I got really excited because I thought they matched the book so well!! 😂 1w
Daisey @ravenlee This is my first time reading this one and I‘m not sure which I like more between it and Jane Eyre. I had a much harder time with the love story of Jane Eyre when I read it so they might just be tied now. I thought this one had a much better message than the others. 6d

I don't typically read contemporary romance but I loved this book. Eva writes supernatural romance novels. It started as a way to get over her lost love Shane. But now he's back. I wish Eva's books were real, especially the last one.

Another fun installment in the Percy Jackson series. I am really enjoying these, although I am not sure I will ever reread them. They are fun and creative adventures, but I just haven't bonded with these characters all that much. Still, this was an entertaining ride and I'm excited to see what happens in the final book!

This one was another soft pick for me, but honestly I think it's partially because the book just went a direction I wasn't expecting. I might enjoy it more the second time around with a better idea of what is going to go down. There's a big plot twist about 100pgs in that isn't even vaguely hinted at in the synopsis, and it kind of threw me off balance. I guess in a way this book was a little... sillier? than I was expecting, with some situations⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) purposefully over-the-top for fun. It was an entertaining read, but not exactly what I was anticipating haha

Pictured with some of the rocks we've collected from various hikes over the years. Love me some rocks. 😁

BennettBookworm Fully agree with this analysis! Such a strange turn of events for a CL book! 1w
TheAromaofBooks @BennettBookworm - I feel like even hinting at it in the synopsis would have made me better prepared. I don't always mind plot twists, but I don't usually expect them at that level in my chick lit!!! 1w

I really loved Henry's first book, Beach Read, but was pretty ambivalent towards People We Meet on Vacation, so I approached Book Lovers not sure what to expect. I ended up really enjoying this one just so much. I can't remember the last time I so wholeheartedly shipped the main couple of a romance. I absolutely LOVED Nora and Charlie together. The snark, the banter, the tension, yes - but also I felt like they genuinely knew and appreciated each⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) other and loved the support and encouragement they found together. Whenever I finish a romance I think “will they still be together in ten years?“ and here my answer was YES. Not a perfect book for me, I could do without casual swearing throughout, I wasn't completely behind the “message“ regarding career vs love, and I'll literally never understand city people, but this one was just tons of fun and made me laugh more than once. Not my ⬇ 3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) favorite book ever, but if you're looking for lighthearted and snarky, pick this one up.

Finished my first June book (tagged), which was not one of the 40+ books I had planned… so pretty much just as expected 🤣😅 I‘m not too mad about it, since it will work for #WickedWords! 🥧

Jumping straight into Lore which will knock off 4-5 prompts for various reading challenges I‘m doing.
