Lion in the Valley | Elizabeth Peters

The 1985-96 season promises to be an exceptional one for Egyptologist Amelia Peabody, her dashing husband Emerson and their precocious eight-year-old son Rameses. The much-coveted burial chamber in Dahshoor is theirs for the digging. Yet there is a great evil in the wind that caresses the hot sands sweeping through the bustling streets and marketplaces of Cairo. An expedition cursed by misfortune and the daring moonlit abduction of Rameses alerts Amelia to the presence of her arch-enemy, the Master Criminal. And his is now a personal quest for the most valuable and elusive prize of all: vengeance on the meddling lady archaeologist with the parasol who has sworn to deliver him to justice...Amelia Peabody herself!

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 This was another one of Amelia Peabody‘s fun archaeological adventures in Egypt which, of course, turned into a murder mystery. Amelia also is again hot on the trail of the Master Criminal. The last couple of chapters didn‘t verge on the edge of the ridiculous, the author took a cheerful leap in with both feet. I teetered back and forth between laughter and embarrassment at the silliness of it all.

Like Emerson, I was a bit tired of hearing about the MASTER CRIMINAL but honestly these books are just such good fun that even the MC drama stayed pretty entertaining, even if the ending feels rather ridiculous. Ramses is still spoiled, but incrementally less obnoxious in this one. Overall I'm enjoying my reread of this series, but looking forward to the later books where Ramses is older and more a part of the team.

Ruthiella Agree that there are some bits that wear less well earlier in the series. But I think the underlying solidity of the Emersons as a family unit carries the reader through that (she writes 11 books in 😂!). 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - Definitely so - one of the things I love most is the close familiar bond between them all. I read the whole series about ten years ago, so it's been fun to revisit them all, knowing that they get better as they go 😂 5mo

bookandbedandtea I also agree that I love the bond the Emersons have and that the series gets better once Ramses is old enough to have his own storylines. 5mo

Coming back to this cozy mystery series after a while. Amelia Peabody is quite an enjoyable character and the location, Egypt, lends alot to the character of the mystery.

Interspersed with Agatha Christie audiobooks, I've been listening to Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody mysteries. Funnier than I remember them being. Lots of fun.

I continue to love this series, even though the stories are generally the same. This one had some new twists with a reoccurring character and an older Ramses. Still excited for the next one!

My own Lion in the Valley wasn‘t too keen on sitting still to pose, but I figure this will do. I‘m really enjoying this series as I still seem in the pattern I had during pregnancy of reading historical murder mysteries and romance novels. Twin infants suck up a lot of time! 😹 Been working on this one for a while. Love Peabody, Emerson and Ramses as usual. #catsoflitsy

Another fun romp in Egypt with the Emmersons. I do so enjoy the back & forth between Peabody & her professor. Ramses adds a bit of spice as well. Again they face off against the Master Criminal whose designs may not all be centered on dealing in stolen antiquities. Great fun & I‘m looking forward to the next 😊

It has been a long time since I read any titles from this series. This was a perfect escapist (so over-the-top) and fun mystery with Master Criminals and very funny lead characters in Amelia, Emerson and Ramses. Lots of fun.

Another #characterfromthenaughtylist for today's #seasonreadings2016. Sethos is definitely on the naughty list, and oh my goodness do I want to be on his! This book cemented my love for him in my favorite series of all time. 💕💕💕

Kat_Reads I'm on the third book in this series! 8y
