Shadow meets a nice if quirky pair during his travels and agrees to stay over at their place because there‘s no hotel nearby. The story devolves from there.

Less aimless than the previous one—at least there‘s a plot here. The imagery is striking, particularly—in accordance with the title—of the animals. There‘s a nice touch of horror in the paranormal/fantasy mix, which I also enjoyed.

American Gods is probably my least favorite of Gaiman‘s works. I wasn‘t really invested in Shadow‘s story, which is just a framing device for little vignettes containing the stories of various gods. And, well, I at least liked those. I was hoping there‘ll be something similar here, but I was disappointed.

Still, it‘s Gaiman, so the base quality is there despite me not finding exactly what I was looking for.

This is a short story as a followup after American Gods. It has been such a long time since I read American Gods when it mentioned the MC, Shadow, at first I was thinking Shadow was like an "entity" not a person.? I thought "oooh, this is gonna be spooky"Then I remembered. This was a pretty fun short read, good to visit this world again.

Shadow has been on the road for two years since he left behind everything that happened with Wednesday. Now, while visiting Scotland, he accepts an offer that seems too good to be true but he needs the money. As the “bodyguard” to help keep out the locals, Shadow quickly realizes there‘s a lot more to this job than first meets the eye. Quick thinking and his past experiences are going to help get him out of this situation.

People believe, thought Shadow. It‘s what people do. They believe. And then they will not take responsibility for their beliefs; they conjure things, and do not trust the conjurations. People populate the darkness; with ghosts, with gods, with electrons, with tales. People imagine, and people believe: and it is that belief, that rock-solid belief, that makes things happen.
