Redliners | David Drake

Pickpick

(1996) A battle-hardened crew is assigned security for settlers of a new colony world. What looks like a milk run turns into an endurance trial when the world turns out to be full of flora, fauna, and enemy combatants that want them dead, colonists and soldiers and all. The ending felt abrupt, but overall it's a very good example of the kind of thing that David Drake does very well. Not usually my sort of thing but I enjoyed this one.

RamsFan1963 I remember reading this years ago when I was on a military science fiction kick. Few authors do this kind of story better than Drake. 3d
swynn @RamsFan1963 I read the first two Hammer's Slammers books in high school and liked them much, but military sf has never been a large share of my reading diet. Every once in a while I'll pick up one of Drake's books and think “Oh yeah he's really good at this.“ What are some of your other favorites by him? 3d
RamsFan1963 @swynn I've enjoyed all the Hammer's Slammers books I've read, although I haven't read the whole series. I liked Lt. Leary, Commanding, Ranks of Bronze, Killer (he cowrote with Karl Edward Wagner), Time Safari, and the Northworld Trilogy 3d
swynn @RamsFan1963 Of those, I've read “Killer“, which I read in my early twenties and liked much, and the Northworld Trilogy, which I read only a couple of years ago after I'd gotten it on Kindle for nothing or maybe a little more and liked it too. Maybe I'll pick up Lt. Leary sometime in the new year. Thanks for the recs! 2d

Retief! | Keith Laumer

45/100 Keith Laumer has always been one of my favorite sci-fi writers, and Jami Retief is his greatest creation. Retief is a member of the CDT (Corps Diplomatique Terrestrienne) who look out for Terrestrial interests in the universe. Sadly, Retief is surrounded by incompetent diplomats, more interested in promotions and commendations, than doing the right thing for the planets they watch over. Retief is cynical, clever and totally irreverent ⬇️

RamsFan1963 it comes to listening to authority figures. This is definitely comic science fiction, but Retief makes for a solid hero, always doing what he thinks is right. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 #Read2025 #SeriesLove2025 8mo

Northworld Trilogy | David Drake

Mehso-so

(1990-1992) This is an omnibus edition of Drake's three "Northworld" books, which retell myths from the Eddas relocated to a science-fiction multi-dimensional bubble universe. It's okay, pretty much what you expect from Drake: solid plotting, detailed battle scenes, and cool military tech. But it's also excessively male-gazey: women characters are typically described by their level of attractiveness, body weight, and bust size.

🎧 Yeah, well? I enjoyed it!! Fun fast easy read. I can see it be a tv show or movie. I enjoyed the MC‘s Daniel & Tina! I love the old timey monsters. Ezma the armorist reminded me of Q (from 007). Great palate cleanser.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️2/3

RamsFan1963 I just ordered this off Ebay. Simon R. Green is one of my favorite authors. 3y

Inconstant Star | Poul Anderson

102/150 Solid, old school space opera. This is two stories from the Man-Kzin Wars series, both involving the ship and crew of the Rover. I liked the action, the cat and mouse tension of the first story. The second story involved hunting for a lost Kzinti ship. The second story was ruined, for me, by the inclusion of a limp romance/infidelity by the captain.
3.75/5

swynn Man, I love Poul Anderson but he couldn't write a convincing emotional interest to save his life 3y
RamsFan1963 @swynn I hate cheating characters, and it was such a case of instant love, unrealistic that the captain would throw away his marriage and his ship (which his wife was half owner of) for someone he just met. 3y

When is a fantasy not a fantasy? This book is labeled a fantasy but it's not. No magic or magic users, no mystical creatures, no dragons, elves, dwarves or orcs. If it hadn't taken place in a fictional land, it could have been sold as straight up historical fiction. That said, it's still a great read, full of well rounded characters, thrilling chases, daring escapes and epic battle scenes 4 🛡🛡🛡🛡

Aliana could see tents going down, pack mules being rounded up and loaded.
