Cathedral of the Sea: A Novel | Ildefonso Falcones

Pickpick

Yes it was an epic masterpiece but it was also just a bit too much. There is only so much cruelty I can take with the racism, classism, feudal systems of oppression, religious oppression, treatment of women, and the brutality of the Inquisition. It‘s an amazing read but I was racing just to get it over with.
How is your read?

#BookedInTime #SpanishInquisition

dabbe I'm way behind and am still with the Celts in Ireland! 😜 1w

Cuilin @dabbe I‘d stick with the celts if I were you, Denise. I don‘t think I‘m likely to pick the Inquisition for #BookedInTime ever again Lol 1w
julieclair I haven‘t started mine yet, but I was thinking I really wanted to read it. Now I‘m not so sure. Maybe I‘ll start, and if it‘s too violent & depressing, I‘ll give myself permission to DNF it. My book is 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures Oh that is too bad. There really needs to be balance in these books to make them bearable. 1w
Cuilin @ChaoticMissAdventures I just got a lupus diagnosis and I‘ve been pretty sick so I think this made me more sensitive to the darker aspects of the novel because there‘s no denying it is a good book. 1w
Cuilin @julieclair what a dark time in history, whoa. No judgment if you DNF. 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures @Cuilin so sorry to hear! Lupus is a beast, hoping you can get on a plan that helps you feel better soon, and that next month's book is happier! 1w
Aimeesue Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. Autoimmune stuff is so hard. Hope you find a med that works well for you quickly! 1w
Cuilin @ChaoticMissAdventures @Aimeesue thank you both. It‘s certainly a learning curve. 1w

I started reading this book a couple of weeks ago, when I was on vacation in Barcelona. A historical novel set in that city in the 20's and 30's, it's full of mystery, obsession and a hint of the supernatural. It wasn't as good as Shadow of the Wind but it still captivated me.

Andrew65 Agree. Still a good book, but not as good as Shadow of the Wind. 5mo

emz711 Oh wow! That's the dream, to read the series while in Barcelona 5mo
kwmg40 @Andrew65 I'm eager to read the next ones, though. I hope they can capture the magic of Shadow of the Wind again. 5mo
kwmg40 @DieAReader @TheAromaofBooks Thanks for stopping by! 5mo
kwmg40 @CaramelLunacy Thanks! I looked among our photos for something that would capture the dark, mysterious feel of the Barcelona of the novel, but most of our photos were taken in the sunshine! 😂 5mo
kwmg40 @emz711 I sure wish I could have stayed in Barcelona long enough to read the entire series, but I was there for just a few days. I'll have to make a return visit. 5mo

From one of my all time favorite books, that happens to have a wonderful fall vibe.

1/5⭐ The two women in the first 10% of the book only exist in relation to their desirability to men, including the main character's obsession with a woman a decade older than him (he starts out at 10 years old). It makes a point out of the woman making sure not to be alone in the same room as him. It's weird and icky along with the general grittiness that authors employ to make themselves seem edgy. I'm not interested. #buzzwordathon

Daniel takes a book from the Cemetery of Lost Books and it changes the course of his life as he becomes dangerously fascinated by its author. Whilst I had to keep very focused to keep track of large cast of characters and the many threads of storylines, it certainly paid off as I became entirely immersed. There‘s a real mix of genres here; love story, thriller, mystery, a little fantasy, that makes it feel quite unique.

TrishB I remember loving this! Seems like a long time since I read it. 10mo
JillR @trishb I think it came out 2004 or something like that. I‘d never heard of it, it was a random choice by my mum for my birthday, a good one as it turned out! 10mo
squirrelbrain Still on my physical TBR shelf, waiting to be read! 10mo

Dan Stevens read the tagged audiobook, and he did a great job. He should read all the books in the series if he hasn‘t done it already. #sundayfunday

Ruthiella I also listened to this read by Dan Stevens and it completely elevated the experience for me. I thought his accent when pronouncing Spanish words was pretty good too. 12mo
Susanita @Ruthiella I listened to a different book where the narrator mispronounced common Spanish place names, so I appreciated that Dan got the words right. 12mo
BookmarkTavern I loved his performance of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None! Thanks for answering! 12mo
Susanita @ozma.of.oz I bet that‘s gooood! 12mo

My latest #littlefreelibrary find! This has been on my list for ages!

AlaMich I have three copies of this: a hardcover, a Drop Caps edition, and a Spanish edition on my Kindle. Unsurprisingly, I have not read any of them. 😂 (edited) 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly @AlaMich Oh dear 😂 I only have multiple copies of one book… I think… but I haven‘t read it yet either! 13mo
