It continues with more perennial classics, perfect to give as elegant gifts or to showcase on your own shelves.Z is for Zafn. Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. Daniel, an antiquarian book dealers son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in what he finds in the cemetery of lost books, a mysterious book entitledThe Shadow of the Wind, by one Julin Carax. But when he sets out to find the authors other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written. In fact, Daniel may have the last of Caraxs books in existence. Soon Daniels seemingly innocent quest opens a door into one of Barcelonas darkest secrets--an epic story of murder, madness, and doomed love.

Last book of 2021 ✔️ Absolutely would recommend. It‘s a combination of suspense, drama, mystery, and romance. I loved it even more because it took me back through the streets of Barcelona. Daniel & Julián are intricate, complex characters who remind you of the importance of honesty and trust, and the power of words. R.I.P. Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Finally finished this one. It‘d been on my TBR for a while and I did enjoy it. I probably would have stronger feelings about it if life hadn‘t kept getting in the way creating long pauses between reading sessions. But the story was intriguing and I enjoyed unraveling the mystery. It was very involved

The unremitting romantic melodrama of this book! I liked parts of it very much, but some was a bit much and I found it predictable. Also, the treatment of women was def ick. You know how when you spend a long time in another culture and the way others act around you, while culturally appropriate for them, just makes you miss home? Yeah, this book evoked that pretty strongly for me.

A boy discovers his favorite book in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, and goes in search of all the books written by the author (sound familiar?). When he learns all the books have been burned, he tries to learn everything he can about the author, uncovering and becoming part of the mystery and corruption in post-WWII Spain. An excellent book, I‘ll read more by this author. I‘m surprised though it didn‘t automatically become a favorite as it ⬇️

Texreader has stellar reviews from Littens with whom I normally share the same opinion about books. I fear it was because I read Murmur of Bees at the same time, and little can hold a candle to that book. Still a great read that‘s been on my tbr too long! #authoramonth (edited) 2mo

I declare this book will be my favorite for a very long time. The lovemaking scenes were so beautiful. The villain was dastardly and someone you could hate and hope his death would happen before the ending. Each character had his/her own story and each one combined to make a beautiful beautiful book. This was leaning heavily towards so-so (I had to make myself pick it up) until about 75% of the way through. Then he made me care enough to go on reading. But the characters were 2 dimensional and the parallels too complete for me to be really invested. Unpopular opinion, but I don‘t think it worth the hype. #authoramonth2021 @Soubhiville

Ruthiella Yeah, I didn‘t love this series either (I also read The Angel‘s Game). The synopsis and gothic atmosphere made me think I‘d love it...but it didn‘t quite add up for me, though I loved Fermin as a character. 2mo

#AuthorAMonth - November - Carlos Ruiz Zafón:
I have read this book again and again on many occasions. I am not going to reread it right now. The recollection of it is strong. Its tender story, its lyrical structure, its dazzling prose, its fine beauty is unforgettable. The author reveals himself a poet. The reader is damn lucky. Every memory of reading this book is wondrous. A favorite book for which I will forever be grateful.

RIP C Ruiz Zafón.

Lesliereads I‘ve read The Prisoner of Heaven and The Labyrinth of the Spirits and so agree that Zafon was a poet!🧡 2mo

Andrew65 A wonderful book! 2mo
Nute @Lesliereads I knew that you would recognize the lyrical writing talent in his work. His books also benefit from the skills of the translator, Lucia Graves, who has strong ties to poetic writing. She has published Spanish-language editions of her father‘s work, the British poet Robert Graves. 2mo
Nute @Leftcoastzen I feel that I could gush for days about this book. It will always have a special place in my heart. I know that sometimes a great admiration for a book is related to the reader‘s mind space at the time of reading. I can only hope that this book speaks to many hearts. 2mo

Nute @Andrew65 Happy to hear that your health is improving. Always so grateful for folks in the education profession. I know that things are super tough right now. I hope that the Pandemic brings about change for many things and that the voices of those in the teaching and healthcare professions are heard loud and clear. 2mo
Nute @Andrew65 I came across the paperback edition of The City of Mist last week. I didn‘t pick it up, but now I‘ve been longing for it. Might rectify that after work today.😆 2mo

Daniel becomes a keeper at the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and after he chooses his book to protect, he goes on a journey to find why someone is destroying every copy of the book. Classic-mysterious-gothic novels are alive and well with this one. A bit slow at times bc we go VERY in-depth into the forgotten author‘s history and hard to keep track of who each character is in the audiobook but plot twists at the end make it a worthwhile read.

This was so good. I give it 4 out of 5 and only because some of the language was a bit misogynistic and homophobic. I understand that the setting was a factor in this, being the 1930s-50s in Spain and that the characters themselves were not inherently misogynist or homophobic, at least no more than anyone was at that time, it still felt like sometimes it was a little much. Everything else about this story was amazing.

This is probably one of the most elaborate reads of my life and it makes for one very beautiful book. I didn't expect to be swept away completely. It's a long journey, and the unhurried pace Zafón set up allowed me to relish and soak in the flavours he established: the bitterness of longing and loneliness, the melancholy from all the intertwined characters gave a warm sweetness that spreads over your palate. Wonderfully dark and delicious.
