What word or phrase in a description will turn you right off to a book - or at least set up a hurdle for you to overcome in your reading? I think my two biggest red flags are "coming of age" and "family saga". ??

Dear publishers,

Stop it! We have the Internet! If someone in Queensland recommends a book to me, I want to be able to order it. Not spend forever trying to figure out whether some random other sanitised title is the same thing.

Yours grumpily,
Rachel-from-the-UK

TrishB I get caught out sometimes with different titles and think it's a different book! Bizarre. 7y
Joanne1 Why would they change that title? Are British readers so previous? And who thought that new title was the one to go with? Oh dear, what were they thinking. Having said that the Phryne Fisher books (and TV show) are delicious. 7y
Andrew65 Read and enjoyed the first one. 7y

drokka One of my biggest pet peeves is title changes for differing markets. It does my head in. In Canada we usually get the Commonwealth titles, but sometimes because of how the distribution works, we end up with the US title. When lucky, we get to play 'figure it out' like you did here when both options are available. My other closely related pet peeve is when a series name changes, or a book belongs to more than one. 7y
Cinfhen Very annoying! They did that with the book Little Bee, giving it a new title and marketing it as something new! 7y
RaimeyGallant I did a double take here. 7y
rockpools @drokka Uggh. I hadn't come across series title changes. That would completely drive me nuts! 7y
rockpools @Joanne1 We are, of course, delicate souls who can't cope with the suggestion of anything...... No, I have no idea! I really enjoyed it - don't think we've had the tv series over here. 7y
rockpools @Cinfhen Little Bee sounds great! I'm stacking it under all of its names, til I figure it out. 7y
rockpools @TrishB It doesn't look good on the author either - in a dozy moment (not that I ever have them, you understand) it'd be easy to assume their books are 'samey'. 7y
Cinfhen Hahaha, it's fine if you end up reading it twice 7y
TrishB @Cinfhen @RachelO I nearly brought that one twice!! 7y
GlassAsDiamonds So irritating! I did a double take at this because, of course, I know this book as Cocaine Blues which is a much cooler title!! How very irritating. 7y
