Down Cemetery Road | Mick Herron
Pickpick

Mick Herron‘s thriller (the first in the OXFORD SERIES) mixes sharp one-liners, genuine twists and cynicism but Sarah‘s convoluted back story didn‘t work for me given what you see of her before it‘s revealed. Zoë Boehm makes a bigger impact despite limited page time and I found both her and the dangerous and driven Michael Downey more interesting characters. It‘s an entertaining read and I will read on, but it‘s not as good as SLOUGH HOUSE.

Just a few years after the end of WWII, pregnant Charlie is sent to Europe to rectify her “situation” but she takes the opportunity to track down her cousin who went missing in Nazi-occupied France. She recruits Londoner Eve to help.
Eve has spent the last few decades trying to recover from her time as a spy during WWI and agrees to help Charlie in the hopes it will lead to her revenge against the man who betrayed her.

As with the first George Smiley novel, Call for the Dead, this is a murder mystery, not the Cold War spy stories for which Le Carre became famous. It's a good mystery, plenty of English Murder Village style secrets, and it's tinged with sadness. Smiley always seems to disappointed, although not surprised, when people do bad things, and you can't help but walk away with a bit of that same melancholy. (Cont.⬇️)

DGRachel I've read all of the Smiley novels, most of them multiple times, especially the early ones, and I love them all. My caution with this one is that there is animal abuse/animal death. It's not graphic, but if you are highly sensitive to that topic, either avoid this book or be prepared to skip through a handful of pages. I forget about it every time I pick it up for a reread. I'm going to have to put a sticky note on my print copy. (cont 2/3) 7d
DGRachel Dreamscape Media republished the audiobooks recently, with Simon Vance as narrator, replacing Michael Jayston. While Jayston's narration is good, Simon Vance hits the perfect note for these books. I will definitely seek out more of the Smiley novels narrated by Simon. (3/3) 7d
