I expected more of a travel rather than a political book but perhaps it is impossible to write about Israel without focusing on politics. It‘s shocking how current To Jerusalem and back is: left wing antisemitism was the same 50 years ago, so was the accusation that Israelis are colonialists, also Israel was and still is held to a higher moral standard than any other country and no other nation‘s right to exist is questioned. The book is outdated

1) I‘m at the north coast for a long weekend with my dad. The weather‘s not great but had a couple of breaks so Pippin could walk me.
2) The Rhododendrons are spectacular
3) Our son brought over fresh halibut on Tuesday, so good.
4) Impressions of the Sea symphony with my daughter
5) Enjoying everyone‘s joyful posts

With 76% read & 9 chapters remaining…this is a solid DNF for me. No matter what I did, I could not focus or keep track of everything that was going on. Too wordy for my tastes - reminded me of reading Shakespeare in HS😬🫨
I very much enjoyed the group read setting, just not this book😂🤭
A good read if you want to be a Wharton completeist otherwise she has certainly written better books you should try first. One thing I did realize after reading 4 of her novels is that she is a classist: pretty much believes that you should stay where you started.
Toni Morrison is a master at describing the most devastating and heartbreaking stories with wonderful language, and to hear this one in her voice added to that. Some of her books strike me much more than others and this is one of stronger. The switching perspectives and sometimes backwards storytelling were somewhat confusing, but they all had purpose and are worth the effort to follow.

This one usually flies under the radar, but it's excellent. It was a #pulitzerwinner in 1935 and Johnson is the youngest person to win for fiction at 24. Highly recommend.
