The perks of having a lurgy = reading this in a day. So much packed into this tiny book. Feel like I need to pick it straight back up and read it again. 😟❤️🥺

TheBookHippie Such a good read. 4h
Tamra Such a fabulous writer - so emotionally astute! 2h
LeahBergen So good! I hope you‘re on the mend. 13m
Dilara Great that you had a good reading day, less great about the lurgy. Talk about making lemonade out of lemons... Get well soon! 13m

“Pecola, on the other hand, restricted by youth and sex, experimented with methods of endurance.”

This is a gut punch of a novel. And like the poet she was, Morrison is a consummate narrator.

dabbe It certainly was. 💙 3h

Thought provoking, disturbing and absolutely an essential read. If you don‘t have questions after reading this, you did it wrong.

“How extraordinary it is that so much before our eyes is upside down. Flower seeds buried in the ground rise up to grace the branches of a thousand trees. The moon hangs high in the heavens, but its light sinks to the bottom of countless waters.”

Unusual book, but important!

I‘m going to complain about this book, but I actually liked it. It just seemed to take forever to read; I made it to about page 230 & thought I‘d never finish.
This has been on my tbr for yrs. A family saga full of inbreeding that results in the narrator being intersex. The family has interesting characters. It‘s a story of immigrants, imperfect people, & identity. 3.5/5 ⭐️ Good book for Pride month

What‘s there to say that hasn‘t been already said about this book. James Baldwin is one of my favorite people (he‘s one of the first people that I started to listen to his old interviews when I started my antiracism journey). His writing is so powerful & plays such an important role in American fiction.

ncsufoxes I‘m really behind but this is one from my list of my #14books14weeks @Liz_M 2d
Amiable I just finished this, too! Excellent read. 2d

I had been intending to read this for so long and it didn‘t disappoint. Eugenides‘ family saga of Greek immigrants pursuing the American dream and of the transition of his central character was enthralling. There was a lot of humour but also authentic emotion and provoking ideas about gender/sex and nature/nurture.
I do wonder how adopting the voice of an intersex character would be viewed in our current environment.
