The artwork in this was stunning. 😍

Such a cute middle grade graphic novel about the power of media, staying truthful, and friendships.

A great adventure focusing on the power of the press to stand against corruption and highlight injustice. Girl power.

This graphic novel is about the power of writing and words. A brave young printer's apprentice and her found-family work to expose corruption in their city.

#OnThisDay #Nov23

I am grateful this Thanksgiving 2023, for John Milton's denouncement of censorship all the way back in 1644. His powerful advocacy for freedom of speech resonates as a cornerstone in the foundations of numerous justice systems worldwide. History repeats itself, and it behooves us to be ready to fight for principles that continue to be threatened throughout the history of man.

I read this in almost the same place almost 300 years later in very similar circumstances. This is more of a history of printing and politics than the epidemic making it an account of the beginning of the end of colonial Boston. (Bonus: the author details all of the ways Cotton Mather's life went sideways after the witch trails.)

“A good book is the precious life-blood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.”
— John Milton, Areopagitica

Stopped in at the New York Public Library (Stephen A. Schwarzman Building in midtown) yesterday and stumbled on this Milton quote in the public catalog room.

Ch 10 Mayhem at the Ministry #freedomofthepress

Rita Skeeter writes a story for The Daily Prophet, detailing the incident at The Quidditch World Cup. Mr. Weasley believes that she's "got in for the Ministry of Magic", but isn't it just a reporter's responsibility to inform the public? Freedom of speech is a privilege. Yet, it becomes complicated when what is presented as facts are false truths. #fakenews #hpchapteraday

#hpchapteraday In this chapter I believe we can see the importance of the #freedomofthepress to report on the type of events that happened at the World Cup & in Berta Jorkins's disappearance , but we can also see the abuse of that freedom in Rita Skeeter's making up of "facts" like the removal of bodies from the forest. So how do we protect the need for this freedom from the abuses of it to which some resort?...

Redjewel_7734 Con't...I see the answer in each individual consumer of the press. Be critical, even of stories & news agencies that seem to support your view. Read widely & critically so you can better evaluate sources & stories. & if a certain press agency or reporter, etc. is consistently guilty of abuses refuse to consume their lies. If they don't have an audience, they don't have a job. We are the best defenders of this freedom-both from attackers & abusers. 8y
