“The path I would rather take is the one that leads to life”
Starting late for the readalong and still on #Genji1
A funny thing happened, when I took my copy off the low bookshelf I discovered that one of my cats had actually “marked it” 😓 he was in a weird phase marking all over the place and sadly this was a casualty. Had to get a new copy as the other one is ruined.

@Lindy

Redwritinghood What is that you‘re eating? Looks good. 6y
Faibka @Redwritinghood it‘s a traditional bread eaten in Mexico only for this day to celebrate the three wise men that brought gifts to baby Jesus. That‘s why it‘s called “Rosca de Reyes” which roughly translates as Kings ring/wreath. Though I‘m not very religious it‘s a family tradition and the bread is delicious! (edited) 6y
Faibka @Redwritinghood I should add that I didn‘t bake it! Lol, I wish I knew how. 6y

Daisey Fascinated by this bread and love the photo! 6y
Faibka @Daisey and this is just a very small one, I‘m always amazed at the size of some of them for large families. My favorite are the ones with caramel filling 😋 6y
Lindy Too bad about your original copy of Genji. What a naughty cat! I‘m glad you got a new copy and some special bread as a treat. 😊 6y
Faibka @Lindy thank you! I‘m sad that I‘m very far behind but will do my best to catch up, it‘s such a fascinating read! 6y
Lindy @Faibka We are only on chapter 6 and a couple of the chapters are quite short. You can do it! 6y
Faibka @Lindy I‘m finding that it‘s impossible for me to do a chapter a day (during the work week I scarcely have half hour to read :( ) I‘m so far behind that I don‘t think I can catch up so I hope it‘s ok if I post late and comment on previous posts. I‘m loving the book but I‘m going to have to go on my own pace if that‘s ok :) 6y

I found it interesting that His Majesty‘s deep love for Haven and the favor and attention he shows her is considered a scandal and an embarrassment for both of them. “From this sad spectacle the senior nobles and privy gentlemen could only avert their eyes,” (3). I‘m really enjoying the Tyler translation—I love the cadence of it.
#genji1

Lindy I‘ve switched to the Waley translation while travelling and it‘s quite a different cadence. I like it too. 6y
batsy I'm enjoying the Tyler translation very much, as well. 6y

Like father, like son. Genji went and fell in love someone he shouldn‘t have. One of his father‘s ladies...who also happens to look like his mother. 😳

Definitely an interesting start to #Genji. Lots of melancholy over lost loves. I thought this was a poignant quote as the Emperor grieves the loss of his Haven. #Genji1

The kiri or paulownia tree: In Japan there remains a custom of sending over a kimono dresser made of paulownia wood with the bride as she settles into her new marital home. This tradition is a relic from olden days when the aristocratic families would plant several paulownia trees at the birth of a girl.

llwheeler Interesting! And beautiful 6y
saresmoore Very cool! 6y
batsy Thank you for this! I made a mental note to look it up, then got distracted by the chapter and forgot 😁 6y
TheWordJar Such a beautiful tree! 6y

“Fragile, transient life, however, pays no heed to vows of eternal love, and he was lost in melancholy regrets.”

saresmoore Paired with the bizarrely warm weather, this book is setting an interesting tone for the new year! 6y
Lindy @saresmoore Lovely quote. It‘s bizarrely warm here too. Yesterday, -18C, today +3C. I saw a guy outside in just a T-shirt. (That‘s carrying it a bit far, IMO.) 6y
SoniaC I have the Washburn translation and it reads so different it seems. Less poetic although the poems are in there. 6y

saresmoore @Lindy Good gracious! 3C is coats, hats, and boots weather around here. 😂 6y
saresmoore @SoniaC It is notable how different each of the translations is from the others. It makes sense, though, considering all the factors that impact translation, in this case: time, culture, language evolution, etc. 6y
SoniaC @saresmoore so very true! The Washburn version seems to read a little more contemporary. But darn it is wordy! 6y
TheWordJar So far I like my translation, but your‘s seems so much more lyrical! I think my equivalent quote is “...but then she died, and the resulting vanity of his promises filled him with unending sorrow.” (Note to self: I will not switch translations after one chapter. I will not switch translations after one chapter....) 6y

I like the illustrations in this edition. Nice to see what Genji‘s boyhood hairstyle was like before his hair was cut at age 12.
“He had feared that Genji‘s looks might suffer once his hair was put up, at least while he remained so young, but not at all: he only looked more devastatingly handsome than ever.”

batsy This was really cute and I'm glad they included the illustrations. (I'm reading the Tyler translation, in ebook.) It was also funny that after Genji had his hair cut, the narrator was like, "Damn, dude looks even *more* beautiful now!" 6y
Lindy @batsy “Only the bride, who was four years older, regarded him as a mere baby and was rather ashamed of him.” (That‘s from the Waley translation.) 6y
TheWordJar I‘m appreciating the illustrations as well. @batsy 😂😂 He‘s got the looks AND talent! My favorite description of Genji so far was “In fact, if I were to list all the things at which he excelled, I would only succeed in making him sound absurd.” Indeed! 6y
batsy @TheWordJar Haha, yes! I liked that bit of tongue-in-cheek awareness. 6y

This scene (Tosa school of painting, 17th c) shows Genji (on the dais) being studied by the Korean physiognomist (or fortune-teller, in the Waley translation). I hadn‘t known that physiognomy was practiced so long ago. I‘ve seen it mentioned in historical novels set in 19th c Europe.

Litsy was glitchy earlier, so I focused on reading the first chapter of #Genji while I ate breakfast. (Fried leftover oatmeal porridge with leftover poached pears.) Those of you following the read along, please note that I suggest using the chapter number along with the hashtag whenever it‘s something specific to a chapter. (ie: #Genji1 )

batsy This rarefied world of the courtly aesthete is having sort of a hypnotic effect on me. It's fascinating! 6y
Lindy @batsy Rarified aesthetes sums it up well. I‘m having to restrain myself from continuing to the next chapter. (edited) 6y
Faibka @batsy loved how you expressed it! Haven‘t started yet but these comments make me want to leap right into it 6y
TheWordJar @batsy Perfect description! 6y

Opening sentence (Arthur Waley translation): At the Court of an Emperor (he lived it matters not when) there was among the many gentlewomen of the Wardrobe and Chamber one, who though she was not of very high rank was favored far beyond all the rest; so that the great ladies of the Palace, each of whom had secretly hoped that she herself would be chosen, looked with scorn and hatred upon the upstart who had dispelled their dreams.
