The Tale of Genji | Murasaki Shikibu

From Persia to Japan, finally can relax and continue reading this XI century, 1182 page book where people communicate through poems and behind curtains, while I enjoy this wonderful Bavarian malty beer. What better way to spend a Saturday night! Cheers 🍻

Faibka @batsy it truly was! I‘ve never tasted that beer before and it was really good, lol 6y
Faibka @Lindy yup! and later occurred to me that the bookmark is from Canada and the glass from New York 😜 6y
Faibka @jveezer go for It! We‘re doing a readalong hosted by @Lindy They‘re on chapter 13 and though I‘m behind I‘m loving reading the comments 6y
Faibka @jveezer and I think I might be out of my mind to tackle this 1100+ page monster while also trying to read Finnegans Wake 🙃 I might be in over my head, lol 6y

“The path I would rather take is the one that leads to life”
Starting late for the readalong and still on #Genji1
A funny thing happened, when I took my copy off the low bookshelf I discovered that one of my cats had actually “marked it” 😓 he was in a weird phase marking all over the place and sadly this was a casualty. Had to get a new copy as the other one is ruined.
Covering XI century on my #amillenniuminbooks challenge
@Lindy

Redwritinghood What is that you‘re eating? Looks good. 6y
Faibka @Redwritinghood it‘s a traditional bread eaten in Mexico only for this day to celebrate the three wise men that brought gifts to baby Jesus. That‘s why it‘s called “Rosca de Reyes” which roughly translates as Kings ring/wreath. Though I‘m not very religious it‘s a family tradition and the bread is delicious! (edited) 6y
Faibka @Redwritinghood I should add that I didn‘t bake it! Lol, I wish I knew how. 6y

Daisey Fascinated by this bread and love the photo! 6y
Faibka @Daisey and this is just a very small one, I‘m always amazed at the size of some of them for large families. My favorite are the ones with caramel filling 😋 6y
Lindy Too bad about your original copy of Genji. What a naughty cat! I‘m glad you got a new copy and some special bread as a treat. 😊 6y
Faibka @Lindy thank you! I‘m sad that I‘m very far behind but will do my best to catch up, it‘s such a fascinating read! 6y
Lindy @Faibka We are only on chapter 6 and a couple of the chapters are quite short. You can do it! 6y
Faibka @Lindy I‘m finding that it‘s impossible for me to do a chapter a day (during the work week I scarcely have half hour to read :( ) I‘m so far behind that I don‘t think I can catch up so I hope it‘s ok if I post late and comment on previous posts. I‘m loving the book but I‘m going to have to go on my own pace if that‘s ok :) 6y

Very excited to finally tackle one of my top and oldest TBRs. Crime and Punishment is my all time favorite novel and I'm very curious to see if this will be the one to finally surpass it. It will be great to have such a wonderful companion for many weeks to come! :)

The Book of the City of Ladies | Christine De Pizan
post image

"Unique amongst female authors in the Middle Ages [...] Christine was the first to earn her living exclusively from her pen. [...] She was also the first woman in the Middle Ages to confront head on the tradition of literary misogyny or anti-feminism that pervaded her culture" (from the introduction)

This looks like it's going to be an interesting read to kickoff my #amillenniuminbooks challenge with the 15th century.

Faibka Nicely paired with a sour ale with actual raspberries. A little too sour for my taste but not that bad. 8y
DeborahSmall I love raspberries (especially in alcohol)🍸❤️ 8y
Mommamanzi I mix mine with hoegaarden. Soooo good! (edited) 8y

Anna40 My sister teaches French lit at Michigan State! She has written about Pizan :) 8y
Faibka @Anna40 that's awesome!! I would love to read what she has written :) 8y
Anna40 @Faibka she published her book about Pizan in French and the article in Italian. I could ask her for a copy of the book if you want to... do you also speak Italian? 8y

emilyhaldi Aggressive!! 👏🏻 8y
LitLogophile This is an amazing challenge! One of the best classes I ever took was a Russian literature course where we read literature, poetry, pamphlets, etc. from each new political period through the centuries. I learned so much about Russia from that experience - imagine what you will learn ; 8y
britt_brooke I'm intimidated by those big books! 😱 8y

Jaimelire IQ84...really enjoyed that one. Totally different! 8y
CAGirlReading I love this stack!💖💖💖 8y
Jae Montaigne! How wonderful! I have had him sitting on my desk for about a year now. Clearly, it's time he came off the TBR list. 8y
[DELETED] 3323341091 that is a fabulous stack! 8y
Faibka @emilyhaldi I know it's crazy! But the only way I'll ever get to these books 8y
Faibka @lostlogophile wow, sounds like a wonderful class! I'm definitely hoping to get a better point of view of different times and places 8y
Faibka @britt_brooke Me too! I'm almost starting to regret it but it's a motivation to get to them finally. No rush! 😊 8y
Faibka @Jaimelire cool! I love unique and original reads, I'm really looking forward to it 8y
Faibka @CAGirlReading thanks! I'm trying not to feel too intimidated 8y
Faibka @Jae oh yes! Been meaning to get to Montaigne for the longest time! we should do a buddy read :) 8y
Faibka @fern thanks! Sadly most of these beauties have been sitting on the shelves collecting dust so now it's book spine cracking time! 2017 is the year for Ulysses, I'm so excited! 8y
Jae @Faibka A buddy read sounds like the go! Let me know when you get to him. 8y
Faibka @Jae Wonderful! 😃 I will! I think Ulysses will be first though, another one I've been putting off for too long 8y
Jae @Faibka You've inspired me! I'm breaking out Ulysses today! My copy was given to me by my old high school teacher a long time ago. It has been around the world with me, but never read! I can already feel it sending out happy vibrations. 8y
Faibka @Jae Yay!!! That's wonderful! 😃 and so nice that you have a special copy which makes it more meaningful 😊💕 I still need to do some de-cluttering today but now I'm feeling excited to get to it 8y
Jae Back to hospital with husband yesterday. Gall bladder this time. Books and Litsy are the only things that are getting me through this with my sanity in tact. 8y
Faibka @Jae I'm so sorry to hear that... I hope everything goes well, hang in there, sending a lot of hugs and my best thoughts for a fast recovery 💜💕 8y
Tsubame I think I'll try this millennium challenge too, it's so interesting! 😃 8y

This looks better. Very excited about this! but I believe it is too far fetched to think that I can finish all of them in a year as most of these are seriously massive 🙃and I want to also do the ListyAtoZ challenge 😁

Faibka @MelissaJ Awesome! Please tag me if you do, I would love to see your choices 😃 Oh Heliodorus, now I'm feeling I want to go further back in time 🤔 8y
Faibka @Alfoster @BookishMarginalia @Desha thank you! I don't think I'll make it without the support and inspiration of my Litsy family 😊💕 8y
Faibka @fern 😆 Going for the gold! 8y

With one day left, working on next year's challenges. I came up with a personal one for me which I hope will motivate me to fill some of the holes in my reading and dust off some books that have been on my shelves for years.
I decided to read a book from each century going back a thousand years (plus 100) mostly from books that I own and have been meaning to read. I think I will need more than a year but it's a start!

Faibka @vivastory Thanks! 8y
Faibka @Laura317 thanks! Though I think I've gone insane 😂 8y
Faibka @LauraBeth thank goodness I've already read Don Quixote! 😉 it's still a pretty insane endeavor 8y
Faibka @BookMusings thanks! 😊 8y
Faibka @Jae Which edition did you read for The Divine Comedy? I thought I had already but couldn't find it so I'll have to get it but want to get a good translation 8y
