The very last #historymonth post! A beautiful book Art and Archeology of the Greek World. Full of amazing pictures! And some of my favourite plays, Aeschylus' three part Oresteia on Orestes, the son of Agamemnom. And Sophocles' Elektra (and other plays) , Elektra is Orestes' sister and they plot to kill their mother. Beautiful tragedy. And the very interesting Symposion by Plato, where the nature of love is discussed.

HijackMe I wanted to post under the tag but kept forgetting it. 😩 Any chance you'll do this again next year? I really enjoyed your posts and found so much for my tbr-pile... 😁🤓 7y
I-read-and-eat @HijackMe Thank you, that is so lovely to hear 😊 I will definately do it again next year! I have so many history books, they deserve to be seen 😉 7y

I was so busy this week I forgot all about #historymonth 😨 So to make it up to you, medieval manuscripts! This is why I studied the middle ages. These Illuminated manuscripts are beautiful beyond belief. This is a small catalogue of the collection of a Dutch museum. I was lucky enough to see some illuminated manuscripts in real life and it was amazing! Pair ofc with Umberto Eco's masterpiece and Bischoff's influential work on Latin paleograohy.

Even more chilling than Dickey's descriptions of haunted places are his questions about why we have whitewashed so much of U.S. history, even our ghost stories.

"Why, ... in a place that should be so haunted by the legacy of such a terrible injustice, the scene of countless deaths," — Shockoe Bottom of Richmond, VA, was a major hub of America's slave trade — "should there be nothing but white ghosts?"

Daisey I'm also listening to this right now! 7y
Linsy @Daisey Isn't it soooo good?? I'm obsessed! 7y
Daisey Yes!! I'm really not that far into it yet, but it's completely fascinating. Such an interesting perspective on history and culture! 7y

Pickpick

A tongue-in-cheek look at witches in America. Like a romp through history with a friend that treats everything with (often inappropriate) levity. #scaretober #allhallowsread #historymonth

Illustration from the book by Howard Pyle of the Salem Witch trials.

I-read-and-eat I love books about witch trails, this one definately goes on the TBR list 😊 7y

Because I lack time today I combine #historymonth with #immigrantstories. This is a Dutch book by Arthur Japin. I was happy to discover it has been translated. This book about two black men brought into a wealthy Dutch household had a huge impact on me. One of the brothers tries to be as Dutch as possible while the other hangs on to his roots. The book is based on historical documents such as letters.

After reading all of your great reviews, I had to try Ghostland. And I'm so glad that I did! This is exactly what I didn't know I needed this season.

One of my favorite parts so far is where he describes how uncanny it can feel to walk into a house with the same layout as yours. We just moved into a new condo and walking into our neighbors' places is a bit chill inducing. Like an alternate reality.

#allhallowsread #scaretober #historymonth

Suzze Great description. Walking into my neighbor's condos feels so weird. I watched one neighbor's cat and went to look for her in the same spot my cat hides in my condo. (He wasn't there). 7y
Linsy Lol, I bet that felt weird. My dog has run into our neighbor's place twice convinced it was ours and barked at the guy to get out. 7y

Another Wednesday another #historymonth pick. Today: early medieval Europe. Europe after Rome is a great academical work bij Julia Smith. You will most likely need some background knowledge of this era but this book is worth the read. Chretien de Troyes has written down some of the most influential stories of all time. The Arthurian Romances, and they are written beautifully. And Pagan Lord is a lovely piece of modern fiction set in Old England.

October is #historymonth in The Netherlands! Join me and post your favorite history books on litsy with #historymonth. History is so diverse, and I am so curious about all of your favourite periods and events. Mine are the Classical period and the early middle ages.

Another snap of my collection will be up later today.

Don't forget to tagg me! I would love to see your picks. 💗

quirkyreader Do you have the completed translation of the tales with Middle English on one side and Modern English on the other. For years I have been trying to find a good edition that matches those specifications. 8y
I-read-and-eat @quirkyreader Nope. The one in the picture is only Modern and I have a separate one for Middle english. Those bi-lingual editions are the best, but I've never seen one. 8y
quirkyreader I got 8y

quirkyreader I got an abridged edition that is a bilingual translation, but alas no a whole translation. 8y
I-read-and-eat @quirkyreader They seem to be strangely hard to find. Which tale is your favourite? 8y
quirkyreader I don't have a favourite as of yet because I haven't been able to read them all. 8y
