I thought the characters in this were realistically written, real feelings, real dialogue - I felt so involved in their lives I found it hard to put down. Obviously Mike & Ben weren‘t the best suited but I think some relationships are like this 🤷‍♀️ and it was depicted beautifully- I loved the way we got to see glimpses of their past & the way we sometimes have to infer reasons for the way the characters are, we are trusted as readers. 🤍

The 4th in the China Thrillers begins with a gripping premise - a virus infecting Chinese immigrants that could spark a pandemic. The strongest element is its prescient story nearly 20 years after publication. There is also a heart-stopping conclusion that leaves readers eager for the next book. But the setting in the US doesn't work as well as the other books in the series. An engaging addition, though not the strongest of the series. 3.5/5 ⭐️

Bailedbailed

135 pages of the narrator whining and pining her BFF is more than enough #HailTheBail

atenelli #TheBookgeekFrau You held on much longer than I do if I don‘t like a book; 30-50 pages is all I give to get into a story. 1y
TheBookgeekFrau @atenelli Between pages 30-50 the idea of bailing crept in. Since it was still backstory stuff I thought *something* would happen soon, but it didn't. 1y

Not only is Attica Locke a very good writer, she‘s a master crafter of stories. This is her debut, and there are some rough bits, but it‘s nonetheless an excellent, complex, well-crafted story. Great social commentary on both capitalism and race.

squirrelbrain I love that Bindi always wants to be in your photos! 1y

jlhammar She is good. I haven‘t read this one yet, but definitely want to. I‘m excited for the new Highway 59 novel 1y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain She‘s very bonded to me and wants to be with me at all times, so it‘s kinda hard not to have her in my pics. 😂 I love that she always wants to be with me (the feeling is mutual), but it does make me feel a little bad when I have to work. 1y
Hooked_on_books @jlhammar I‘m excited for that one, too! I really liked the first 2 in the series. 1y

Mehso-so

Just as Mike's mother is about to arrive in Houston for a long visit with him and his boyfriend Ben, Mike hears that his father is dying and flies off to Osaka to spend his last few weeks with him, leaving Ben and Michiko to negotiate living together in a tiny apartment. ⬇

rwmg The book is divided into sections: Ben and Michiko in Houston, with flashbacks/Mike in Osaka, with flashbacks/Ben, Mike, and Michiko in Houston. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the timelines to match up in my head using the texts between Ben and Mike as reference points. More importantly, there were too many conversations where there was obviously a lot of subtext but I wasn't picking up what the subtext was actually saying so was just baffled. 1y
Ruthiella This book baffled me too. To me Ben and Mike seemed mismatched and unhappy together. I didn‘t get it. 1y
rwmg @Ruthiella Yeah, I didn't really see why they got together for more than a one-night stand in the first place. 1y

At 15, Bunny is a boy crazy Foreign Service kid spending the summer in Baku; later we see her transformation from an aimless 20-something to a successful PR professional for a family-run oil company. At first it seems that's all there is to it: a girl, a life; by the final scenes, in a near future that is all too plausible, it sinks in that this is a truly devastating novel about climate change. An artfully detailed slow burn, brilliantly done.

Ruthiella Agree. This book was for me a lot more than it seems on the surface. 👍 2y
Decalino @Ruthiella Exactly! It hit me like a gut punch: this is how we let it happen. 2y
