I thought the characters in this were realistically written, real feelings, real dialogue - I felt so involved in their lives I found it hard to put down. Obviously Mike & Ben weren‘t the best suited but I think some relationships are like this 🤷‍♀️ and it was depicted beautifully- I loved the way we got to see glimpses of their past & the way we sometimes have to infer reasons for the way the characters are, we are trusted as readers. 🤍

The 4th in the China Thrillers begins with a gripping premise - a virus infecting Chinese immigrants that could spark a pandemic. The strongest element is its prescient story nearly 20 years after publication. There is also a heart-stopping conclusion that leaves readers eager for the next book. But the setting in the US doesn't work as well as the other books in the series. An engaging addition, though not the strongest of the series. 3.5/5 ⭐️

Not only is Attica Locke a very good writer, she‘s a master crafter of stories. This is her debut, and there are some rough bits, but it‘s nonetheless an excellent, complex, well-crafted story. Great social commentary on both capitalism and race.

At 15, Bunny is a boy crazy Foreign Service kid spending the summer in Baku; later we see her transformation from an aimless 20-something to a successful PR professional for a family-run oil company. At first it seems that's all there is to it: a girl, a life; by the final scenes, in a near future that is all too plausible, it sinks in that this is a truly devastating novel about climate change. An artfully detailed slow burn, brilliantly done.
