Pickpick

The author was a journalist and it shows in his writing. He is clear and factual in his analysis of Southeast Asian politics and society. It also shows that his heart is breaking for this region that has been his life‘s work, first as a journalist and then as a mediator. Overall, a very depressing pick. Also, it should be noted that this book was published in 2017, so obviously some things have changed.

Bailedbailed

I tried and I just could never get invested into the story. I kind of felt she thought others were responsible for her happiness. So I bailed and glad I did. At least I can mark this one of my TBR mountain.

marleed Haha! I read this in late 2007 in a critical juncture in my life. Parts of this book were a life raft. I haven‘t read it since mostly because I want to keep my memories of this book‘s value to me as they are. But so many readers just can‘t with this one. I really do wonder what I‘d think now in this life of mine I‘ve since crafted which is filled with almost nonexistent daily drama. 2mo
Christy2318 I read this around the time it came out and it was one of those right book right time situations for me. I‘d probably bail if I read now. 2mo

Mehso-so

So this was the first book in Book Interrupted‘s Book‘s with Movies Season. I loved this book in 2008 and recommended it to others but reading it this time around there were some really cringy parts in it. I still loved the spiritual and self discovery stuff. We had a good discussion on the podcast about how people 15+ years ago didn‘t really talk openly about mental health or women escaping social expectations to know themselves. So-so in 2024.

Beauty Is a Wound | Eka Kurniawan

Panpan

Beauty Is A Wound is a book you get, when a writer starts out with an inventive theme, but slowly devolves into sexist, misogynistic garbage, which feels like its from the wet dreams of a horny and misguided teenager.

There is an unhealthy and disturbing fixation on sexual assault, incest and beastiality. But the worst is how the author makes it seem like the women invited their brutalisation with their beauty.

Just NO!!

(Contd in comments)

TalesandTexts This book is supposed to be a commentary on the toxic relationship between colonisers and the colonised countries. But, I don‘t subscribe to the author‘s view that the colonies invited their plunder and destruction by titillating their colonisers. 3mo

It just didn't hit the right notes for me. It took me a little bit to get into the story, but there were a few fun moments in the middle. I really loved some of the family antics, but the main characters I didn't really care for. There didn't seem like much there. The romance part of it also fell a little flat for me.
