Sutanto focuses on family, cultural identity, and humor, set against the backdrop of Chinese-Indonesian traditions. During Chinese New Year in Jakarta, Meddy and her family face chaos when an ex of Second Aunt tries to win her back, leading to a dangerous gift mix-up. The family must navigate comedic and risky situations to retrieve the gift.
pickOne of my core beliefs growing up was that the US was good. This book puts the final nail in the coffin of my decaying faith in this country. US foreign policy is a monstrous beast. The number of genocides we have encouraged, funded, and instigated, is mind-boggling. This book is thoroughly and thoughtfully researched and the audiobook narration is clear and well done. I knew I‘d be angry when I finished. I am also heartbroken and horrified.
“We gallop through our lives like circus performers balancing on two speeding side-by-side horses--one foot is on the horse called “fate,“ the other on the horse called “free will.“ And the question you have to ask every day is--which horse is which? Which horse do I need to stop worrying about because it's not under my control, and which do I need to steer with concentrated effort?”
pickThis is the last installment of the aunties series. It was cute, full of the antics we‘ve come to love. I think book two was my favorite of the three, but they‘re all fun, easy reads.
